Exploring Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park, TN
The Native American complex is the largest group of Middle Woodland mounds in the United States, and Sauls’ Mound, the name for the great temple mound is the second highest surviving mound in the US at 72 feet tall. This video explores almost every single mound in the state park, including the geometric earthworks and the Citadel. Most interesting was the duck's nest, and the cypress swamp along the Forked Deer River, a sharp change in landscape from the open meadows and mounds area.

Climbing To The Top Of Pinson Mound: Discovering FREE State Parks In Tennessee
One of the most amazing things about the state of Tennessee is the access you can have to their State Parks when visiting. The majority of their parks have no admittance and offer various options for activities, camping and points of interest.
When I visited the Pinson Mounds I didn't know what exactly to expect and was very excited to find such an interesting historic site. The staff was informative and really helped me to understand the site further before heading out to hit the climb to the top.

Important Lost Mound City Of Castalian Springs, Tennessee
A report on the kind of lost forgotten mound city called the Castilian Springs Mound Site. 12 mounds originally, one 600 ft. long and palisade walls, conical mounds and some pretty cool artifacts. Today one lonely hill is all that reminds of us of a once important city in present Tennessee.

The view from the top of Sauls Mound
Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park covers more than 1,200 acres and contains at least 15 Native American mounds. In addition to Sauls Mound the group includes Ozier Mound, the Twin Mounds and Mound 31. Archaeological evidence suggests the mounds were both burial and ceremonial in purpose. Pinson Mounds is a national historic landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the 1950s and 1960s, local citizens, believing in the value of the site, convinced the state to purchase the land and preserve it as a park. Pinson Mounds officially became a Tennessee State Park in 1974. To this day, the park contains the largest Native American Middle Woodland Period mound group in the United States
