Reynolds-Alberta Museum Harvest Festival
My Dad always wanted to check out the Reynolds-Alberta Museum Harvest Festival. Held every Labour Day weekend, it's when the museum fires up their antique farm equipment and demonstrate how it works.
So I took him this past Labour Day. Here's some shots of the antique farm equipment doing what it was made to do.

Case 80hp In Steam And Footplate Tour
A welcome visitor to the Pioneer Acres show this year is a 1914 Case 80hp steam traction engine celebrating it's centenary. It is owned and operated by our own museum president, Robin Redding, who has kept her in running condition as her sixth owner. In keeping with Case tradition, this tractor is fitted with a single cylinder engine with an 11 inch bore and 11 inch stroke and the boiler is rated to it's originally specified operating pressure of 150lbs psi. This engine has spent it's entire life in Alberta and carries the serial number 30,885. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.

Co-op E3 Tractor Pull
A fine example of a rather rare Canadian built Co-op E3 pulling the drag sled in featherweight class. The Co-op brand of tractors was born out of a desire by farmers to reduce cost through collective ownership of machinery production. After World War II, an arrangement with Cockshutt led to the new E series of Co-op tractors which were simply re-branded Cockshutt models. Poor sales led to the Co-op facilities being sold to Cockshutt in 1952, and the Co-op brand was discontinued. The E range was built in Canada at Co-op's own factory in Brantford, Ontario. The E3 is identical to the Cockshutt 30. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.
1918 GMC Samson Sieve-Grip In Action
Firing up and driving about a beautifully restored Samson Sieve Grip model 30X. Less than twenty of these unique machines remain in the world. Production of these odd looking tractors began at the Samson Iron Works of Stockton, California in 1914. General Motors Company acquired the recently re-named Samson Sieve-Grip Tractor Company in 1917 and continued producing the tractors out of the former companies iron works in Stockton, California. Now fitted with GMC's own 30hp four cylinder engine and still fitted with their revolutionary self-cleaning steel skeleton wheels, the Sieve-Grip continued to be produced by GMC in direct competition to Ford's Fordson Model F until 1923 when it was deemed no longer profitable and GMC closed the Samson division, thus ending the story of this unique line of tractors. One feature of note is the Delco fly-by-wire throttle that used a rheostat to control the engine speed via an electromagnetic flyball governor that acted on the carburetor's throttle linkage instead of a conventional lever throttle. This feature was not seen in normal usage again for three quarters of a century. Their performance on muddy terrain was unmatched in their day, only outdone by much more costly caterpillar tracked vehicles. Filmed at the Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.
Advance Rumely Backfire Start Fail 1
Belt Cranking a Rumely Oil Pull after new valves where installed. What we don't know is that the spark plug wires where reversed, causing one cylinder to fire on the exhaust stroke. This caused Some serious backfires. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta
Caterpillar Thirty Engine Startup Demo
A full engine startup demonstration of one of Caterpillars earliest products. The Thirty was built from 1925 until 1938 based on a design formerly built by C.L. Best Tractor Company since 1921. The model 30 is powered by a four cylinder gasoline engine developing 36 belt and 30 drawbar horsepower at 1400rpm from it's 561 cubic inches (7.6 litres) displacement. Horses At Work
Here are some demonstrations put on by the equine folks during our annual show. Displaying how things where done in the field before and even into the early years of mechanized farming. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.
Advance-Rumely 30-60 Kickstart
Demonstrating the actual starting method for the massive 60hp series Rumely oil pull tractors. The colossal two cylinder engine displaces 30.9 litres and actually developed a much higher 75.6hp on the Nebraska test. They where renowned for their ease of operation and reliability. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.
Rumely Model S Bursts To Life
After over a decade of slumber, the giant 1926 Rumely Model S oil pull bursts back into life with a belch of smoke and the vomiting forth of a bird's nest from her funnel. Built from 1924 through 1928, the 17,500lb Model S's where christened the king of Advance Rumely's lightweight lineup. This was a thoroughly modern machine in it's day. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.
1914 Case 80hp Out For A Drive
Celebrating it's 100th birthday, this ever reliable 80 horsepower Case traction engine continues to hammer out a beat from it's giant single cylinder heart. Built during the opening months of the First World War, this well preserved example of J.I. Case engineering has spent it's entire life on the prairies of Alberta, Canada. On the belt, her single cylinder engine, with a bore and stroke of 11 inches, can produce in excess of 2000 foot pounds of torque, making these machines the premier plow and threshing engines of their day as they opened up the Canadian west and transformed it into the crop producing juggernaut it is today. Filmed at Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.
Internationl Harvester Mogul Tractor 1911 Start
Hand starting the big Mogul hit and miss gas traction engine during the Pioneer Days show of 2009. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.
Rare International 650 Pull
An International Harvester 650 gasoline powered tractor tackles the drag sled admirably. A particularly rare sight, the International 650 gasoline tractor was identical to it's diesel version in every respect except it's 350ci petrol engine. Despite this it still manages a respectable 56 drawbar horsepower and 62hp on the belt. Nebraska tests indicate a maximum drawbar pull of 8564lbs in first gear. The 650 was offered in gas, diesel and LP. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.
Lanz Bulldog 35hp In Action
A fine running example of the legendary single cylinder Lanz Bullldog family. This particular model is a 35hp unit, and utilizes the same hot bulb, multi directional, semi diesel engine synanamous with all Lanz tractors. A special thanks to Peter Philipsen. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta
