This is a project of the Community Based Project (JCP) of the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment & Information Technology of the University of Pretoria
This project was undertaken at The Ditsong Pioneer Museum - Silverton
Lessons Learnt:
• I had the opportunity to improve photography skills
• I had the opportunity MS Excel skills as the need to use it in my course never arises
• Learnt how to do an inventory
It was a project outside my comfort zone of creativity. I wanted to challenge myself with administrative work. However, as I conducted the project I realised the overlap between the two. The history of the artefacts and how they were used, correlated to the information learnt in interior architecture course content. Editing photographs required composition knowledge.
Being the only member of my group helped me develop time management skills as I depended on myself to conduct and complete the project on time.
It was a fun project to undertake and I am happy to have made a contribution to the collection and digitalisation of South African History.

June 2015. We worked as a group to improve and help the community that are not as fortunate or as well funded as they need to be to maintain the property. Work can sometimes be fun if you do it for the right reasons.
Personal comments:
MG Mundell: From doing this community work, I gained knowledge about the museum and its origins regarding the pioneers. I gained skills regarding painting and the use of drills etc.
Z Pelzer: I gained knowledge that the museum is financially struggling and this is due to the low levels of income as it is a government owned property. I gained gardening and team work skills.
CJ Swanepoel: I gained knowledge about the history of the museum. I gained skills from fixing the benches and i gained skills from the painting.
RC Uys: I gained knowledge from the lady at reception regarding the pioneers, the reason for this museum. I gained skills regarding financial management and use of power tools.
J Engelbrecht: I gained knowledge about the Pioneer museum that it is there to show the military history of our country. I gained team work, finance management and painting skills.

The Pretoria Art Museum occupies an entire city block in the eastern suburb of Arcadia. The current museum building dates back to 1962, although the museum art collection was founded in 1932 when a Lady Michaelis donated a large collection of artworks to the Pretoria city council after the death of her husband. The collection contains mainly South African work and includes pieces by famous South African artists such as Irma Stern, JH Pierneef and Gerard Sekoto.
The striking Pretoria Art Museum building, with its long low concrete facade, was built in 1962 in the distinctly modern International Style and was considered to be very much ahead of its time. As there were already other museums in South Africa boasting fine collections of European art, it was decided that the Pretoria Art Museum would focus primarily on collecting and displaying South African art. Over the years the initial collection of works by South Africa’s ‘Old Masters’ such as Pierneef, Hugo Naudé and Maggie Laubser has been complemented by a growing collection of contemporary art by artists such as Sam Nhlengethwa and Walter Oltmann.
As well as the permanent collection, the museum also houses a reference library and hosts regular temporary art exhibitions by local and international artists.
Guided tours of the museum collection are available and the museum specialises in art tours aimed at school children.
Guided tours for groups of a minimum of 10 people are offered when pre-booked. One option covering South African art is run at 10h00 and 13h00, and lasts an hour. Up to 100 learners can be accommodated at a cost of R10 per person. The other choice is a fun-filled two-hour tour for children aged four to 10 at a cost of R20 each.
Blood River Monument, South Africa
Blood river monument, Ncome river, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa 2003
The Battle of Blood River (Afrikaans: Slag van Bloedrivier; Zulu: iMpi yaseNcome) is the name given for the battle fought between 470 Voortrekkers (Pioneers), led by Andries Pretorius, and an estimated 15,000–21,000 Zulu attackers on the bank of the Ncome River on 16 December 1838, in what is today KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
A monument was erected on the site of the battle in 1947, consisting of an ox wagon executed in granite by the sculptor Coert Steynberg. In 1971 a laager of 64 ox wagons cast in bronze (by Unifront Foundry in Edenvale — Fanie de Klerk and Jack Cowlard) was erected, and unveiled on 16 December 1972.

Voortrekker Monument,South Africa
The Voortrekker Monument Pretoria stands over 40 meters tall on its hilltop home, and is visible from a large part of the capital.
It was built to describe the history of the Afrikaner pioneers who left the Cape Colony, where they suffered under British rule, to travel to the interior of the country from 1835 to 1854 on what has come to be known as the Great Trek.
A unique marble Frieze circles the inside walls of the Voortrekker Monument. In bas-relief, 27 panels depict the story of the Great Trek from 1835 to 1852. The Frieze not only shows the history of the Great Trek, but also shows how the Voortrekkers went about their every day lives. It also provides an insight on their religious beliefs and work methods of the Voortrekkers and historic wars, such as the Battle of Bloodriver.
Cenotaph Hall is located on the lower floor, and is home to the Cenotaph (empty tomb).
On 16 December every year the sun shines down through a small hole in the centre of the Voortrekker Monument roof, onto the Cenotaph, lighting up the enscribed words: Ons vir jou Suid Africa (We for thee, South Africa). Many thousands of South African's travel from a far for this special memorial event.
The idea to build a monument in honour of the Voortrekkers was first discussed on 16 December 1888, when President Paul Kruger of the South African Republic attended the Day of the Covenant celebrations at Blood River in Natal. However, the movement to actually build such a monument only started in 1931 when the Sentrale Volksmonumentekomitee (SVK) (Central People's Monuments Committee) was formed to bring this idea to fruition.
Construction started on 13 July 1937 with a sod turning ceremony performed by chairman of the SVK, Advocate Ernest George Jansen, on what later became known as Monument Hill. On 16 December 1938 the cornerstone was laid by three descendants of some of the Voortrekker leaders: Mrs. J.C. Muller (granddaughter of Andries Pretorius), Mrs. K.F. Ackerman (great-granddaughter of Hendrik Potgieter) and Mrs. J.C. Preller (great-granddaughter of Piet Retief).
The Monument was inaugurated on 16 December 1949 by the then-prime minister D. F. Malan.[citation needed] The total construction cost of the Monument was about £ 360,000, most of which was contributed by the South African government.
A large amphitheatre, which seats approximately 20,000 people, was erected to the north-east of the Monument in 1949.

Bloemfontein
Bloemfontein (; ; Afrikaans and Dutch fountain of flowers or blooming fountain; also known as Bloem) is the capital city of the province of Free State of South Africa; and, as the judicial capital of the nation, one of South Africa's three national capitals (the other two being Cape Town, the legislative capital, and Pretoria, the administrative capital) and is the seventh largest city in South Africa. Situated at an altitude of above sea level, the city is home to approximately 520,000 residents and forms part of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality which has a population of 747,431.

Bloemfontein also hosts sub-Saharan Africa's first digital planetarium, the Naval Hill Planetarium and Boyden Observatory, an astronomical research observatory erected by Harvard University.
Bloemfontein is popularly and poetically known as the city of roses, for its abundance of these flowers and the annual rose festival held there. The city's Sesotho name is Mangaung, meaning place of cheetahs.
The origin of the city's name is disputed. It is likely borrowed from the Dutch words bloem (flower) and fontein (fountain), meaning fountain of flowers. Popular legends include an ox named Bloem owned by Rudolphus Martinus Brits, one of the pioneer farmers that was taken by a lion near a fount...
