Bayfield, Ontario: Last Day in Huron County Vlog

On my last day in Goderich I made a quick visit to the small town of Bayfield here in Huron County, Ontario.

Bayfield is a beautiful little community located right on the shores of Lake Huron and it's a great place to spend a few hours wandering around exploring all of the small shops, historic buildings, locally owned art galleries, and museums.

There are also some great restaurants in Bayfield and I would definitely recommend stopping by if you're looking for a quick bite to eat here in Huron County.

After spending a few hours exploring Bayfield I made my way back to Goderich where I went for one last swim at the Black’s Point Beach right on Lake Huron.

Then I made my way back to the Benmiller Inn where I enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Benmiller Inn restaurant attached to the property.

I ended up having quite an amazing 4 days here in Huron County and I really loved all the small towns like Goderich, Kincardine, Port Albert, Bayfield, and everywhere else that I was able to check out during my trip.

30 The Albion Hotel

The Albion Hotel

1 Main Street North, Bayfield, Ontario Canada

The original building on part of this site was a store built in the 1840s, and modified in 1856. By the early 1860s, it was a stagecoach hotel. The store/hotel was extensively rebuilt at some point resulting in the larger hotel you see today. The Elliotts who had purchased the hotel in 1890 added the double verandah in 1902. Members of the family ran the hotel until 1964. It has changed little and you can still see the original cherry wood staircase leading to four guest rooms.

A shocking tragedy occurred at the Albion on November 8, 1897. Ed Elliott had died the year before leaving his sons, Harvey and Fred, to help their mother and two sisters run the hotel. It was closed for the evening and the brothers, both given to drink, got into an argument on the verandah. A sister and a youth named Woods tried to intervene, but Fred rushed at his brother, withdrew the gun he had earlier taken from beneath the cash register, and shot Harvey Elliott dead, without a sound or struggle. Fred was convicted of manslaughter, spent five years in hard labour in Kingston Penitentiary and died in 1905. Even now, owner and
guests of the hotel report things being moved, electrical interference, and a TV switching channels on its own. Is it a ghost? A newspaper account of the trial is in the Archives.
