The Puget Sound War was an armed conflict that took place in the Puget Sound area of the state of Washington in 1855–56, between the United States military, local militias and members of the Native American tribes of the Nisqually, Muckleshoot, Puyallup, and Klickitat.Another component of the war, however, were raiders from the Haida and Tlingit who came into conflict with the United States Navy during contemporaneous raids on the native peoples of Puget Sound.Although limited in its magnitude, territorial impact and losses in terms of lives, the conflict is often remembered in connection to the 1856 Battle of Seattle and to the execution of a central figure of the war, Nisqually Chief Leschi. The contemporaneous Yakima War may have been responsible for some events of the Puget Sound War, such as the Battle of Seattle, and it is not clear that the people of the time made a strong distinction between the two conflicts.

A massive wildfire that has destroyed at least 100 homes forced the residents of a second north-central town in Washington state to leave their homes Friday, and prompted a partial evacuation of a third community in the scenic Methow Valley, authorities said.
No injuries have been reported.
Fire swept through the town of Pateros on Thursday, leaving its 650 residents to return to large areas of smoldering rubble.
Friday's dawn revealed dramatic devastation in Pateros, including solitary brick chimneys and burned-out automobiles. Most residents evacuated in advance of the flames.
My phone rang and I came out to answer my phone and there were flames coming over the top of the mountain, Sharron Keniston, a resident of Pateros, said. I just thank god. I feel for all the people who lost everything. I have my house. I lost my shed and all my tools and stuff in there, my garden behind it. But I have my life.
Gov. Jay Inslee said about 50 fires were burning in the state, which has been wracked by hot, dry weather, and gusting winds and lightning. Some 2,000 firefighters were working in the eastern part of the state, with about a dozen helicopters from the Department of Natural Resources and the National Guard, along with a Washington State Patrol spotter plane.

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. — A Port Orchard police officer shot a suspect several times during a struggle that left the man dead and the officer injured.
The confrontation happened after 8 p.m. Thursday behind Port Orchard's South Park Mall.
Sources tell KIRO 7 the man who was killed worked at a nearby tavern. They say he ordered a pizza at a restaurant three doors away, and was walking into the back of the strip mall to smoke, when he was confronted by the Port Orchard officer.
Sources tell KIRO 7 the officer tried to arrest the man for an outstanding warrant. When the suspect tried to run away, he struggled with the officer. Neighbors say they heard several shots, and saw the man on the ground. Investigators say he died at the scene.
Kitsap County detectives, who are leading the shooting investigation, told KIRO-7 they don't have enough facts to talk about what led up to the shooting.
The officer's injuries are said to be minor. He was treated and released from a Bremerton hospital.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Tacoma ( tə-KOH-mə) is a midsized urban port city and the county seat of Pierce County, Washington, United States. The city is on Washington's Puget Sound, 32 miles (51 km) southwest of Seattle (of which it is the largest satellite city), 31 miles (50 km) northeast of the state capital, Olympia, and 58 miles (93 km) northwest of Mount Rainier National Park. The population was 198,397, according to the 2010 census. Tacoma is the second-largest city in the Puget Sound area and the third-largest in the state. Tacoma also serves as the center of business activity for the South Sound region, which has a population around 1 million.
Tacoma adopted its name after the nearby Mount Rainier, originally called Takhoma or Tahoma. It is locally known as the City of Destiny because the area was chosen to be the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century. The decision of the railroad was influenced by Tacoma's neighboring deep-water harbor, Commencement Bay. By connecting the bay with the railroad, Tacoma's motto became When rails meet sails. Commencement Bay serves the Port of Tacoma, a center of international trade on the Pacific Coast and Washington's largest port.
Like most industrial cities, Tacoma suffered a prolonged decline in the mid-20th century as a result of suburbanization and divestment. Since the 1990s, developments in the downtown core include the University of Washington Tacoma; Tacoma Link, the first modern electric light rail service in the state; the state's highest density of art and history museums; and a restored urban waterfront, the Thea Foss Waterway.
Tacoma has been named one of the most livable areas in the United States. In 2006, Tacoma was listed as one of the most walkable cities in the country. That same year, the women's magazine Self named Tacoma the Most Sexually Healthy City in the United States.Tacoma gained notoriety in 1940 for the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which earned the nickname Galloping Gertie.
