Early history of Independence
Independence, Mo. was a place of west embarkation in the settlement of the west. It has a hub-bub of activity where man individuals from different backgrounds, cultures and countries met, traded, organized and headed West - first to trade with Santa Fe (then part of Mexico) and later to settle California and Oregon. Here is how historian Bernard DeVoto described the Independence Square during the peak of the western migration between the 1840s and 1850s. (Source The Year of Decision 1846)

The Oregon Trail is a computer game originally developed by Don Rawitsch, Bill Heinemann, and Paul Dillenberger in 1971 and produced by the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium (MECC) in 1974. The original game was designed to teach school children about the realities of 19th century pioneer life on the Oregon Trail. The player assumes the role of a wagon leader guiding his or her party of settlers from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon's Willamette Valley on the Oregon Trail via a covered wagon in 1848.
The game is the first entry in the Oregon Trail series, and has since been released in many editions by various developers and publishers who have acquired rights to it, as well as inspiring a number of spinoffs (such as The Yukon Trail and The Amazon Trail) and the parody The Organ Trail.
The Oregon Trail was extremely successful, selling over 65 million copies, after ten iterations over forty years. It was included in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die. It was a hallmark in elementary schools worldwide from the mid-1980s to mid-2000s, as school computers came bundled with the game. In 2016, The Oregon Trail was inducted into World Video Game Hall of Fame.
The Oregon Trail is a 2,170-mile (3,490 km)
historic east–west, large-wheeled wagon route and emigrant trail that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon. The eastern part of the Oregon Trail spanned part of the future state of Kansas, and nearly all of what are now the states of Nebraska and Wyoming. The western half of the trail spanned most of the future states of Idaho and Oregon.
The Oregon Trail was laid by fur trappers and traders from about 1811 to 1840, and was only passable on foot or by horseback. By 1836, when the first migrant wagon train was organized in Independence, Missouri, a wagon trail had been cleared to Fort Hall, Idaho. Wagon trails were cleared increasingly further west, and eventually reached all the way to the Willamette Valley in Oregon, at which point what came to be called the Oregon Trail was complete, even as almost annual improvements were made in the form of bridges, cutoffs, ferries, and roads, which made the trip faster and safer. From various starting points in Iowa, Missouri, or Nebraska Territory, the routes converged along the lower Platte River Valley near Fort Kearny, Nebraska Territory and led to rich farmlands west of the Rocky Mountains.
From the early to mid-1830s (and particularly through the epoch years, 1846–69) the Oregon Trail and its many offshoots were used by about 400,000 settlers, farmers, miners, ranchers, and business owners and their families. The eastern half of the trail was also used by travelers on the California Trail (from 1843), Mormon Trail (from 1847), and Bozeman Trail (from 1863), before turning off to their separate destinations. Use of the trail declined as the first transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, making the trip west substantially faster, cheaper, and safer. Today, modern highways, such as Interstate 80 and Interstate 84, follow parts of the same course westward and pass through towns originally established to serve those using the Oregon Trail.

A BIT ABOUT ME: I consider myself to be an average rider. Not good with jumps, corners, and not very fast. As I continue to try and improve I find myself becoming more and more passionate about riding and wish I could do this every day. I watched many others start a MTB YouTube channel and thought it would be fun to start my own. All of them are really good riders and do an amazing job giving out information about trails, gear, and tips. I would like to think I could help review trails that aren’t as well known to encourage more bike traffic. Their channels really motivated me to move forward and put my own little twist on trail rides and mountain biking. I will do my best to inspire people to get out and ride and find people to share my adventures with.
Always on a quest to find great mountain bike trails, awesome mountain bike friends, helpful mountain biking tips, and amazing MTBing Adventures.
Walking the Oregon Trail and Driving to the Top of the Bluff
The Scotts Bluff National Monument is a beautiful park on the Nebraska prairie. The ranger station/museum was full of information and our little explorers loved the Junior Ranger Program. The living history reenactment made the pioneer story come alive as we walked past the ruts of wagon wheels on the Oregon Trail. A rock slide has closed the trail to the top of the bluff, but vehicles can drive up and there are two hiking trails at the top - as well as a magnificent view!
We called the Robidoux RV Park home as we explored Nebraska this week and I could not have been more pleased. A wonderful, friendly, helpful camp host made our stay so enjoyable. The grounds are beautiful, most of the sites are paved with plenty of space between them, and there is a big open park and playground area for the kids to roam.
