Pirin National Park - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Pirin National Park is a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site in the south of Bulgaria. It covers a large area of mostly-undisturbed wilderness, including alpine, sub-alpine and coniferous forests. There's some great hiking here during the summer months, and skiing in the winter as well. And one very special tree!

UNESCO and Bulgaria Heritage - Pirin Mountain National Park
Pirin National Park, Bulgaria
Pirin National Park is located in the Pirin Mountains, in southwest Bulgaria. The park includes seven municipalities in the district of Blagoevgrad: Bansko, Gotse Delchev, Razlog, Sandanski, Strumyani, Kresna, and Simitli.
In 1962, when Pirin National Park was established, it was known as the Vihren Nature Reserve. At that time it covered 6,212 decares and comprised the highest points of the Demyanishka and Vihren regions. Over the years the territory of the park was increased many times over, and it now covers 40,000 decares. Since 1983, the park has been protected as a UNESCO Heritage Site.
The park includes one of the oldest reserves in Bulgaria -- Bayuvi Dupki -- Dzhindzhiritsa. The area was granted this status in 1934 so as to protect the endangered black and white fir (Pinum peuce) and the habitats of many other plants and animals. In 1977, this reserve was included by UNESCO on its list of reserves as part of the Man and Biosphere program, as was the park's Yulen Reserve, in 1994.See more:

Crossing Koncheto Ridge and Mount Vihren in Bulgaria's Pirin Mountains
A short video showing my walk along Bulgaria's stunning Koncheto Ridge to reach Mount Vihren. This was part of a longer trip that took me through many mountain ranges across Eastern Europe.
The video features the song 'Keys View Morning' by Edamame:
Pirin National Park
Spread over an area of over 27 000 ha, at an altitude between 1008m and 2914m in the Pirin Mountains, south-west Bulgaria, the site comprises diverse limestone mountain landscapes with glacial lakes, waterfalls, caves and predominantly coniferous forests. It was added to the World Heritage List in 1983. The extension now covers an area of around 40,000 ha in the Pirin Mountains, and overlaps with the Pirin National Park, except for two areas developed for tourism (skiing). The majority of the extension is high mountain territory over 2000m in altitude, and is covered mostly by alpine meadows, rocky screes and summits.
Pirin, Bulgaria - A hike to Sinanitsa /
And again on a hiking in my favorite mountain in Bulgaria - Pirin. We were hiking on a wonderful two-day route, from Vihren hut to Sinanitsa hut. On the way to Sinanitsa, we went through Muratovo lake and Muratov peak. Then we climbed Sinanitsa peak which is not as high as other peaks in Pirin (only 2516 m), but personally for me it's one of the beautiful peaks in the mountain. The views from above are amazing! On the way back to Vihren hut, we have decided not to go back on the same way. There is another path, which is passing through the Gergiyski lakes and above the Vlahinski lakes. I could not say that the route is too heavy, but also is not the easiest one.

Mountain Vihren (Вихрен), 2914 m: top of Pirin National Park/ Национален парк Пирин”, Bulgaria
Mountain Vihren, 2914 m, the second highest mountain of Bulgaria and the highest mountain in Pirin National Park (Национален парк Пирин), which was one of 3 UNESCO Heritage sites visited by us in Bulgaria ( along with Rila Monastery and Boyana Chirch) on August 3, 2018. Rostislav Bukasov , Peter Bukasov and Olena Filcakova hiked Vihren, 2914 m, with elevation gain from Vihren hut of 942 meters in 3 and a half hours. About 100 hikers hiked Vihren on this day, including about 15-20 hikers from Slovenia. The youngest hiker who we met near the summit was a 9-year boy from Moscow, guided by his father. A group of 13-16 year old Bulgarian teenagers were seen on the summit, where it was rather foggy and windy.

Climbing Kamenitsa peak in Pirin, Bulgaria /
Climbing Kamenitsa peak in Pirin Mountain, Bulgaria - August 2016. Pirin is the second highest mountain range in Bulgaria after Rila (2,925 m) and the eighth highest in Europe after the Caucasus, the Alps, Sierra Nevada, the Pyrenees, Mount Etna, Rila, and Mount Olympus when each is represented by its highest peak only. It has an area of 2,585 km2 and an average height of 1,033 m. Pirin is set in the southwest of Bulgaria, between the Struma and Mesta Rivers, bordering Rila to the north at the Predel Saddle (1,142 m) and Slavyanka to the south at the Parilska Saddle (1,170 m). The distance between these two points is 60 km from the northwest to the southeast and the maximum width of Pirin is 40 km from the town of Sandanski to the village of Obidim. Other neighbouring mountains include Vlahina, Maleshevo, Osogovo and Ograzhden to the west, as well as the Rhodopes to the east.
In order to protect the rich wildlife in the mountain the Vihren National Park was created in 1962, which was renamed Pirin National Park in 1975. It has an area of 403,32 km2. The park protects the largest forests of Macedonian and Bosnian pine in the country as well as many rare and endemic species. There are several nature reserves which account for 15% of the total area. The National Park was designed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
Kamenitsa peak (41.686864, 23.482635) is the 5th highest peak in Pirin mountain with it's 2822 m. It's not an easy peak to climb, but for a good mountaineer it wouldn't be something special. The easiest way to climb it is from Tevno lake. The shortest path from the Tevno lake is going towards Kamenitsa from north-east, right on the edge. This is the harder route, but it's more beautiful. If you are not afraid from heights, I recommend it! The easiest route is to go around the peak and climb it from it south side. This path is longer, but it's easier for a not well trained mountaineer and for those who are afraid from heights. The views from the peak are awesome, but you need a clear skies to see everything around. Unfortunately we didn't have a good weather. It wasn't rainy and windy, but there were thick clouds when we were on the top, so we couldn't enjoy the view.
