Waitomo Caves - Marokopa Falls - Ruakuri Walk
Finally I arrived at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves but before I made the stunning guided tour through the FootWhistle Cave,
I checked out the Ruakuri Walk. This spectacular loop walk took me through a forested gorge, past natural sculpted cliffs and under low limestone arches.
On the way towards Raglan, the surfer town of New Zealand, I checked out the Marokopa Falls, which are one of the most impressive waterfalls in New Zealand!
Enjoy :)

The BEST WALK in NEW ZEALAND!
The Ruakuri Bushwalk is located in the Waitomo region of New Zealand not far from the famous Waitomo Caves. The walk takes 30 minutes (according to the sign), but in reality you can easily spend a couple of hours.
The walk has many caves and similar rock features. The rivers disappear underground and reappear making for a very interesting and confusing walk. At one point the river enters a large cavern where you can go underground to a platform hanging a frightening way above the water below.
The walk also contains glowworms, making it a great night time walk, with glowworms in the caves but also on the trees and rock faces along parts of the track. Doing the whole walk at night including the underground viewing platform is quite a thrill.
Caves, waterfalls, viewing platforms, tunnels, underground viewing, bridges, wetas, glowworms, birds...what more could you want.
This is my favourite short bush walk in New Zealand, others may disagree, feel free to tell me your favourite in the comments below.

Aranui Cave
Aranui Cave is set in the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, 5 minutes drive from the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. It is named after Ruruku Aranui, the local Maori man who first discovered this previously hidden gem back in 1910.
Aranui Cave has a natural cave entrance and is the smallest and most delicate of Waitomo's three main caves. As a dry cave without a river running through it, it houses very little life past its entrance.

Road Trip to Waitomo
When I plan road trips, I always go for the more scenic route, the road less traveled if you will, and this one did not dissapoint!
We set out on a 530km road trip from Auckland to Waitomo and back.
The route will take us through Port Waikato, Limestone downs, Raglan around Mt Karioi on Whaanga Rd to Bridal veil falls, from there we headed to Te Anga past the Aotea and Kawhia harbours visiting the Marokopa falls, Piripiri cave and the Mangapohue natural bridge.
1st Stop was Port Waikato which is a small little town situated on the south bank of the Waikato River at its outflow into the Tasman Sea. It used to be an important port during the New Zealand Wars of the 19th century and also the transhipment point between ships of the Northern Steamship Co and the river steamers.
From here we headed south past Limestone Downs to Raglan.
Raglan is a small beach side town on the West Coast, famous for surfing and fishing. We stopped for a quick lunch at the Wainui reserve, here you will also find the Four Directions Sculptures – four sculptures carved out of Hinuera stone. The sculptures represents different directions with each carving representing north, east, south and west.
North Fire | East Air | South Earth | West Water
Next stop will be the Bridal Veil falls, again we took the more scenic road around Mt Karioi on Whaanga road, a well known road amongst rally enthusiasts.
the Bridal Veil falls are 55m high and you can walk down to the base on a well maintained path that consists of 261 steps to the bottom and four lookout platforms.
Our journey continued to Te Anga past the Aotea and Kawhia harbours visiting the Marokopa falls, Piripiri cave and the Mangapohue natural bridge which is only a couple of minutes apart.
