PERUVIAN PISCO IS STRONG // DAY 3 PERU HOP
We explored and had coffee in Ica City in the morning then jumped back on the Peru Hop bus to El Catador, a Pisco and Winery producer not far from Huacachina. Their Pisco was soo strong, but their wine was delicious and extra sweet. We might have been a slightly intoxicated by the time we left because those were strong shots! After, we made a short stop to view the Nazca Lines from a tower followed by a 12 hour bus ride to the city of Arequipa.

Paracas National Reserve, Paracas, Pisco, Ica, Peru, South America
The Paracas National Reserve is located in Ica, Peru and consists of the Paracas Peninsula, coastal areas and tropical desert extending to the south slightly past Punta Caimán, a total of 335,000 ha (217,594 ha are marine waters and 117,406 are part of the mainland). It includes Bahía de la Independencia (Independence Bay) and miles of coastal waters. Its main purpose is to preserve the marine ecosystem and protect the historical cultural heritage related to ancient indigenous peoples, mostly of the Paracas culture. The reserve is home to many species of wildlife, particularly birds (see Paracas Birds, which are largely concentrated at the water's edge. Near the entrance inside the reserve is the Muséo Sitio de Julio C. Tello. Named for the archeologist who made major discoveries about the ancient Paracas culture, it features artifacts and interpretation, as well as information about the flora and fauna of this unique region. Established in 1975, it is the oldest marine reserve in Peru, and it incorporates a variety of marine habitats and tropical desert. In addition to the biological areas, the reserve protects prehistoric sites of the Paracas culture and other ancient civilizations. Near the museum is the Paracas Necropolis (100 BCE - CE 300), comprising the burial sites known as the Cabezas Largas and Cerro Colorado, where Julio C. Tello found many fine grave goods buried with mummified remains of the Paracas elite. Also in the reserve is Pampa de Santo Domingo, where archeologists have dated finds of human remains to 6500 BC. Found there was a decorated quena (flute), believed to be the first musical instrument of Peru. One of the main geomorphological attraction along the Paracas coast, La Catedral arch (the Cathedral) was destroyed during the 2007 earthquake. The Bahia Lagunillas is bordered with red sand beaches, product of the erosion of porphyry rocks that dominate some of the hills of the Paracas Peninsula. On the Paracas Peninsula is the mysterious geoglyph called the Paracas Candelabro, which is believed to date to the Paracas culture about 200 BCE.

Pisco is Peru - The Wine Ladies TV Part 1
Pisco es Peru... as is world class gastronomy, spectacular landscape, incredible people and of course Machu Picchu!
In a word, our adventure to Peru, a world of hidden treasures was magical.
Our mandate as we landed on Peruvian soil, in the capital city of Lima, located in a desert, surrounded by surreal spaces of sand dunes was to discover the Pisco Trail. Pisco, you see is the name of Peru's national drink, a grape spirit, a wonderful elixir that is made with grapes from vast, green vineyards that flourish in the heart of the arid deserts of Peru. Our exploration of this traditional spirit that dates back hundreds of years was a delectable journey of a drink of exquisite qualities. There is a story to Pisco, we enjoy the unraveling of its secrets and its mysteries as shared with us by the proprietors of several Bodegas. Be sure to ask for Pisco on your next evening out, as Pisco is the new rising star at the bar!
Where there is drink there is food, and Peru is widely known as the gastronomic capital of the Americas by many a chef around the world. Each and every meal was a celebration of freshness and of fusion. Peru's cuisine is a blend of several cultures that speak to its history. From the traditional cuisine of the Indians, to that of the Spanish conquerors, the influx of Japanese and Chinese. And with the diversity of the landscape from the coastal region with a selection of over 2,000 fish to choose from, and the Andean highlands the purple, red, yellow chocla corn, with 3,000 kinds of potatoes the possibilities are endless!
Our adventures were not restricted to our dietary pleasures alone... as there were numerous moments of participAction as well! Riding the Paso horses for example at the stunning traditional yet extremely innovative Bodegas Carevedo founded in 1884. Following our delicate dismount we learn from the passionate and charismatic co-owner Johnny Schuler of the history and breeding of these particular horses, and how they related to the history of Pisco.
At Bodegas El Sarcay, another award winning Pisco producer, hawks are trained here to keep the smaller birds at bay and away from the vineyards. We are hypnotized by the majesty of the hawks and a gloriously bedazzling eagle as they fly to our extended arms piece of meat in hand.
Finally Machu Picchu, one of the wonders of the world....Arresting, transformational and powerful with take-your-breath-away beauty. Truly no words can adequately describe how you feel standing in the immense presence of what is Machu Picchu! An ancient civilization, a city in the sky, a wonder of the world! Part 2 and Part 3 for more of our adventures in Peru!
