ओरंगाबाद शहराचा तालूका कन्नडवरून पाच ते सात किलोमीटर वर चाळीसगाव मार्गावर डाव्या हाताला कालिमठ फाटयावर उतरल्यास कालिमठ मंदिरासमोरून आठ किलोमीटर सरळच जावे समोर गौताळ औट्रमघाट अभयारण्याची मोठी कमान आहे.तेथुनच लेण्याना जाण्याचा मार्ग आहे .

पितळखोरा लेणी ईतिहास
पितळखोऱ्याची ओळख टॉलमीच्या ' पेट्रिग्ला ' व बौध्दग्रंथ महायुरीत वर्णन केलेल्या ' पितलांग्य ' बरोबर पटवली जाते. हे स्थान शुर्पारक(सोपारा) , कल्याण , भरुकच्छ (भरूच ) यासारख्या बंदरांना देशांतर्गत असणाऱ्या प्रतिष्ठान ( पैठण) व तगर ( तेर ) अशा शहरांना जोडणाऱ्या व्यापारी मार्गावर आहे.पितळखोरा अथवा ' पितळेच्या दरीत १४ बौध्द लेणी आहेत. ज्यांचा समावेश महाराष्ट्रातील आदय मठांमधे केला जातो. सर्व लेणी हिनयानकालीन असून महायानकालीन स्थापत्य रचनेचा कोणताही पूरावा येथे दिसून येत नाही. लेणी क्र.३ मधील चित्रांमुळे महायान कालखंडाचे अस्तित्व दिसून येते .लेणी दोन समूहा मधे विभाजीत असून दरीच्या उजव्या बाजुस असणारा प्रथम तर डाव्या बाजुस द्वितीय समूह आहे . त्यापैकी सहा चैत्यगृहे आणि इतर विहार आहेत. विहारांमधे लेणे ४ विशेष उल्लेखणीय आहे . ह्या लेण्यांचा मंडप विशाल असून त्यात पाठीमागच्या भिंतीत सात कक्ष खोदलले असून त्याचे छत घुमटाकार आहे.
सहा चैत्यगृहांपैकी लेणी ३ चैत्यस्थापत्याचा अभिजात योजनेसाठी उल्लेखणीय आहे.यातील उजव्या बाजुच्या रांगेत १० वा खांब स्तंभ गांधिक अत्तर बनविणाऱ्या कुळातील मित देवाचे व ११ वा खांब संघकाच्या पूत्राचे दान आहे . असा उल्लेख खांबावर आहे. हे सर्व दाते प्रतिष्ठान म्हणजेच आजच्या पैठणचे रहिवासी होते .
पितळखोरा हे पश्चिम भारतातील शैल्यस्थापत्याचा आदय केंद्रापैकी एक असून यांतील स्थापत्य रचना कालात्मकतेच्या दृष्टीने नव्हे तर धार्मिक , सामाजिक, व आर्थिक अभ्यासाच्या दृष्टीने महत्त्वाचे आहे . याच्या पुरातात्विक महत्वामुळे १९५१ च्या अधिसूचना क्र.LXXI , दि. २८.११.१९५१च्या अनुसार भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण द्वारे राष्ट्रीय महत्वाचे स्मारक म्हणून घोषित करण्यात आले आहे.

Pitalkhora caves
Pitalkhora is identified with 'petrigata ' of
Ptolemy and pitangalya of Mahamayuri ,a Buddhist chronicle . located on an ancient trade route connecting the port town like surparaka (sopara),kalyan ,Bharukachha(Bharuch) with inland cities like Pratishthan (Paithan),and Tagara(Ter). Pitalkhora of 'Brazen Gien' consist of 14 Buddhist Caves which form one of the earliest centers of the monastic establishment in architectural activity of the Mahayana period is noticeable .The presence of Mahayana phase is only reflected in the form of paintings especially in caves 3 The caves are in two groups,one to the right of ravin (group 1)and another to the left (Group 2)of which 6 are chaityagrihas (3,9b,10,11,12,and 13)and the rest are viharas.
Viharas follow a simple plain,consisting of rectangular hall having cells on side walls, these cells consist of simple beds and niches cut into the rock.Among The viharas, Caves 4 is a unique excavation.This cave consists of a large hall with seven cells having barrel vaulted roof and decorated facade.in front of this caves and at a low level is a wide court,which is also shared by caves 1,2 and 3. The doorway is flanked by life size doorkeeper,the lintel was decorated with a figure of a Gajafakshmi and the jambs with floral designs.Among the six chaityagrihas , Caves 3 is a nothworthy which follows The classic plan,consisting of apsidal prayer hall ,divided into a nave,apes and side aisles by the colonnades running parallel to the walls.There are two inscription on 10 th and 11 th pillars from front on the right row recording that the pillars was a gift of the sons of Mitadeva of perfume maker family and the other was gift of the sons of Samghaka, both the donors were from Pratishthan or the modern Paithan.
Pitalkhora is one of the earliest centers of rock cut architecture in the western India remains important in the study of history and art for its architectural wealth and source of epigraphical, religious, social, economic studies as well.Due to its archaeological importance, The archaeological Survey of India declared it as a monument of national importance vide notification No.LXXI of 1951 ,dated 28/11/1951.

पितळखोरे लेणी भारतातील सर्वात जुनी लेणी असल्याचे मानले जाते. ही लेणी सुमारे इसपूर्व दुसऱ्या शतकातील म्हणजे अजिंठा-वेरूळची लेणी येथील लेण्यांपेक्षाही प्राचीन असल्याचे मानले जाते

या लेण्यातील काही गुहा दुमजली आहेत व वर जाण्यास भुयारातून पायऱ्या खोदलेल्या आहेत. मुख्य गुंफा म्हणजे एक मोठा चैत्य आहे. मधल्या भागात ३५ स्तंभ असून या स्तंभांवर धवल, कृष्ण, रक्त आणि तपकिरी वा पिंगट रंगात रंगवलेली बौद्ध संन्यास्याची चित्रे आहेत. भोवतालच्या दालनातील छतावर सिंहासनाधिष्ठीत आणि वर छत्र असलेल्या बुद्ध मूर्तीनी चितारलेले, सजवलेले आहे. मुंडन केलली मुले व बुटक्या मूर्ती गुढघे टेकून वंदन करताना दिसतात. स्त्री-पुरुष यांच्या आकृतीही येथे दिसतात. (या चित्रांचा काल गुहेपेक्षा अर्वाचीन दिसतो.) चैत्य लेणे क्र.३ आणि विहार लेणे क्र. ४ यांच्या दर्शनीय भागात गन्धिक कुलातील मितदेव आणि पैठणच्या संघकपुत्र यांचे दानलेख आहेत. विहार लेणे क्र. ४ येथील गजथर हा प्राचीन भारतीय वास्तू शिल्पातील चौथऱ्यावर दाखविलेला पहिला गजथर आहे. हे हत्ती अलंकार युक्त असून त्यांच्या दोन्ही बाजूना घंटा लोंबताना दिसतात. या लेण्याच्या प्रवेश द्वारावरील द्वारपाल लक्षणीय आहेत. या लेण्यातील एक अप्रतिम शिल्प म्हणजे राजा-राणी शिल्प होय. या राजदंपतीने भारतीय शिल्पकला क्षेत्रात एक आगळे-वेगळेच महत्व प्राप्त करून घेतले आहे

1. Ajanta Caves :
The Ajanta Caves are 29 (approximately) rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 CE in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state of India. The caves include paintings and rock-cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive paintings that present emotion through gesture, pose and form.

2. Bibi Ka Maqbara :
The Bibi Ka Maqbara is a tomb located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India. It was commissioned by Aurangzeb's Son Azam in the memory of his Mother Dilras Banu Begum.

3. Daulatabad Fort :
Daulatabad, also known as Devagiri, is a 14th-century fort city in Maharashtra state of India, about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) northwest of Aurangabad. The place was originally named Devagiri when it was an important uplands city along caravan routes (ca. sixth century AD), but the intervening centuries have reduced it to a village.

4. Grishneshwar Temple :
Grishneshwar Temple, the twelfth Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva, is an important pilgrimage site for Shaivites in Aurangabad. Red rocks are mainly used for the construction of the temple, which consists of a remarkable five-tier shikara. Inside the temple is a beautiful display of carving-work of other gods and goddesses.

5. Pitalkhora Caves :
The Pitalkhora Caves, in the Satamala range of the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, India, are an ancient Buddhistsite consisting of 14 rock-cut cave monuments which date back to the third century BCE, making them one of the earliest examples of rock-cut architecture in India. Located about 40 kilometers from Ellora, the site is reached by a steep climb down a flight of concrete stairs, past a waterfall next to the caves.

Ghatotkacha Buddhist caves, Jinjala - Aurangabad

The Ghatotkacha caves are located 18 km to west of the World Heritage Site Ajanta Caves, near Jinjala village, Aurangabad. The famous Ajanta & Ellora Caves have overshadowed the presence of the nearby Ghatotkacha caves. The Ghatotkacha caves are carved inside the deep Indhyadri range of Western Ghats. The caves were excavated in the 6th century AD, and were influenced by Mahayana Buddhism. The Ghatotkacha cave has an 22 line inscription in the porch which makes it clear that the viharas here were made at the time of Varahadeva, the prime minister of King Harisena of the Western Vakataka Dynasty. There are 12 carved cells in the both side of the hall with the statue of Buddha seated in Dharmachakrapravartana Mudra in the main shrine. The Ghatotkacha caves are actually isolated viharas similar to the vihara no. 6 & 16 at the Ajanta.

Complete History Of Jinjala Caves in Aurangabad Maharashtara Ghatotkacha Cave Janjala are situated 18 km to west of Ajantha caves, Near Jinjala village Sillod Aurangabad. The caves were excavated in the 6th century AD, and were influenced by Mahayana Buddhism. The caves have an inscription from the minister of the Vakataka dynasty. The inscription is about Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha.
The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation advises that the caves are only for the adventurous traveller as access is difficult.

Ways To Reach :
If one has their own vehicle then following option can be exercised:-

1)
65 kms from Aurangabad on the route towards Ajantha caves on Aurangabad-Jalgaon road is Sillad village. 14 kms from Sillad is Golegaon village. State Transport buses from Aurangabad are available to reach Soygaon village. Just before Golegaon there is a diversion on the left for Andangaon village which is further 5 kms. There are two routes from Andangaon. One takes to Soygaon via Halada-Vetalwadi and he second route leads to Ambhai village at 12 kms. Janjala village is 10 kms from Ambhai and the fort is 3 kms from the Janjala village.

If one does not have their own vehicle then following option can be exercised:-

2) 105 kms from Aurangabad on the route towards Ajantha caves on Aurangabad-Jalgaon road is Fardapur village. 15 kms from Fardapur village on the Fardapur-Chalisgaon road is Soygaon village. State Transport buses from Aurangabad are available to reach Soygaon village.

3)
A) Soygaon village to Jarandi is 9 kms. One can easily get an S.T. bus or a 6 seater autorickshaw from Soygaon village. It takes 2 hours to reach the fort from the mountain ridge which is to the east of Jarandi village. It is recommended to take a route guide from the village.


B) Soygaon village to Vetalwadi is 4 kms and the dam is further 2 kms. One can easily get an S.T. bus or a 6 seater autorickshaw from Soygaon village. It takes 2 hours to reach the fort from the mountain ridge which is to the west of Vetalwadi dam. It is recommended to take a route guide from the village.

Available in Ambhai village.
Drinking Water Facility :
It is recommended to carry drinking water although the pond near the tomb has potable water in it.
Notes :
Janjala fort, Ghatotkach caves, Vetalgad fort and Rudreshwar caves can be covered in one day.

Aurangabad Caves are buddhist shrines located close to BiBi ka Maqbara in Aurangabad city. Aurangabad caves were carved out of Basalt rock in 6th and 7th century.

Though the Aurangabad caves sculptures are comparable to Ajanta and Ellora, the caves are much smaller, and thus less visited by tourists.
