Trujillo is a municipality located in the province of Cáceres, in the autonomous community of Extremadura, Spain. Originally settled on a granite knoll which was readily fortified, Trujillo now extends to the South East of its original site. Trujillo is both a centre for tourism, with over 25 hotels, and a regional market town.
The old town of Trujillo contains many medieval and renaissance buildings. Many of these were built or enriched by the conquistadors born in the city. These include, the conquerors of Peru, Francisco Pizarro and his brothers, Francisco de Orellana and Hernando de Alarcón. Pizarro's equestrian statue stands in the main square, the Plaza Mayor of Trujillo . The most important monuments are the castle (old Arab fortress), the church of Santa María (thirteenth century), and the church of San Francisco. Trujillo hosts the national cheese festival in early May.
Trujillo has a rich heritage. Among the most important monuments are the Castle (Alcazaba), the church of Santiago, the church of Santa María la Mayor, the church of San Francisco, the Church of San Martín, the Plaza Mayor, and renaissance palaces such as the palace of the Marquis of the Conquest, the palace of the Orellana-Pizarro family, the palace of the Duques de San Carlos, Marquesado de Piedras Albas, the house of the strong Altamirano, Palace Chaves (Luis Chaves Old), and of course the walled old town. STORYLINE:
The Vatican's Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, toured the south eastern Peruvian city of Ica on Friday before heading to Chincha and Pisco, the areas worst hit by an August 15 magnitude-8 earthquake.
Bertone was welcomed by hundreds of residents.
During an open air mass, Bertone delivered a message from Pope Benedict XVI and said: God wants to remain among you, with you, accompany you.
Last Sunday Pope Benedict XVI announced that Bertone would go to Peru to bring the witness of my sentiment and the concrete aid of the Holy See.
Earlier the Cardinal met Peruvian President Alan Garcia who decorated Bertone with the Order of the Sun medal, given to those that have rendered extraordinary services to Peru.
Garcia also extended his gratefulness to Bertone for his visit, saying it would allow him to personally see the pain of those affected and to bring them the comfort of christian values.
The Cardinal was expected to travel later to Chincha and Pisco, where over 540 people died and thousands remain homeless following the August 15 earthquake.
The Vatican said it has donated 200-thousand US dollars in aid for victims of the earthquake.
