Places to see in ( Montauban - France ) Place Nationale
The National Place is a place located in the city of Montauban in France . Rebuilt in the xvii th century after two fires, it is the heart of the city. Montauban, Mons Albanus (Mont Blanc), was founded in 1144. The first mention of a place with cutlery in Montauban dates from 1170. A text of 1450 attests that these cutlery formed a double row. This place thus takes again the characteristics of the places which one can meet in the bastides of the southwest by amplifying the cutlery. The square was to be surrounded by wooden houses as can be seen in place of cutlery in Mirepoix or Lisle-sur-Tarn with the consular house.
The place had several roles: - place of expression of the life of the town with the consular house and a platform from which were proclaimed the rules of municipal life, - place of trade. Each of the cutlery had a name reminiscent of the commodities traded - the northern cover is the Wheat cover, the southern cover, the Drapier cover, the fruit cover to the east, and the clog cover to the west. The consular house housed the weights and measures that could serve as a reference if necessary, - place where justice was rendered. The pillory was in front of the western canopy. It was replaced in 1792 by a wooden cross.
The November 12, 1614, the south side and part of the east side are ravaged by a fire that broke out in the Mariet Viguery shop . Several stops are taken between 17 and 20 November 1614 to impose new construction rules. The consuls ask to replace the wood with the brick. In front of the importance of the damages with forty homes or affected families, the consuls asked some gratuities of the king to help the reconstruction. Louis XIII granted 16,000 pounds to be taken for eight years on the sizes lifted in the city.
The architect Pierre Levesville comes to Montauban in March 1615 at the request of the consuls of the city. The reconstruction of the southern part in brick houses was completed in 1621. To do this, the architect has redeveloped the plots to give more regularity to the facades. It is probable that the decoration with pilasters already existed beforehand, clad on the facades of the wooden houses, because pilasters of Tuscan order are mentioned in a description of 1564.
Consular deliberations show that in the first quarter of the xvii th century , the consuls were mainly occupied the fortifications of the city until the siege of Montauban , in 1621. The king is unable to take the city defended by Henry II of Rohan . The city surrendered to the king in 1629. The Catholics returned to the city. A mid-party consulate was established in 1632 and a stewardship was created in 1635.
A last reconstruction campaign began around 1700. The buildings that had not been destroyed by the fires were felled and rebuilt following the same plan as the others at the request of Intendant Legendre de Lormoy. The consular house on the square was demolished in 1702. The place officially takes the name of Place Royale the following year.
In a quote from July 17, 1705, it is stated: All the walls will be folded in plastered cleanly with mortar of lime and sand and all the visible bricks of the doors, crossed, cornices and cords will be red with red ocher and the joints pulled with the brush . The square is completed in 1713.

Montauban is a historical bastide town situated about 50 kilometres north of Toulouse in the Tarn-et-Garonne department. The town, founded in 1144 by the Count of Toulouse on the banks of the Tarn River, is largely constructed using the attractive pink stone found in the region, like its great southern cousin Toulouse.
The highlight of the town is at the centre of the original bastide in the Place Nationale. Surrounded by grand pink houses in the red-brick that is unique to this part of France, and set above fine arcades, the very attractive central square in Montauban was largely rebuilt in the 17th century after a fire, hence is not the original bastide centre.
The arcades (the arches and walkways that surround the square and historically provided shelter for the market traders) are an unusual 'double' construction with one set of arcades near the house and shop fronts and another closer to the main square. Intact on all four sides, this central square in Montauban is one of the most impressive to be seen in all of the bastide towns of south-west France and some experts maintain that it is also the oldest bastide town in France.
After perhaps stopping for a pause in one of the cafes in the town centre be sure to wander around the surrounding streets a little. For example, if you follow the Rue de la Republique you will see a smaller square called Place du Coq which is also charming. Following the traditional grid pattern of a bastide town, the straight streets of Montauban town centre around the centre now form a lively shopping centre, with lots of interesting features and buildings to discover. Keep exploring along Rue de la Republique until you reach the river and a chance to see the lovely old bridge - and old it is, having being built around 1303-1335.
Among the highlights in Montauban you will discover the Church of Saint Jacques - an attractive 13th century church with an octagonal belfry and an impressive mosaic entrance that survived the fires that later destroyed much of the town centre. Another religious monument, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame (1739) is in a classical - baroque style with four statues on the facde and notable as being one of the few buildings in the centre to be built from stone. Inside the cathedral you can see a 17th century organ and an important painting by Ingres.
One notable attraction here in Montauban is the Museum Ingres (next to the old bridge), where you can see the works of renowned 19th century artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and another local artist called Bourdelle. The museum is found in an impressive palace that has been built on the site of an earlier palace that was occupied by the Black Prince during the Hundred Years War, and you can see remains of the original building in the basement of the Museum.

Montauban Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral and a national monument of France located in the town of Montauban. It is the seat of the Bishopric of Montauban, created in 1317, abolished by the Concordat of 1801 and transferred to the Archdiocese of Toulouse, and restored in 1822. The cathedral of Montauban was Protestant from the start of the Wars of Religion until Catholicism returned to Montauban in 1629.
The construction of a new church, the present building, was agreed after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. The cornerstone of the new cathedral was laid in 1692, and the church was consecrated in 1739. Initially, the architect François d'Orbay supervised the works. When he died in 1697, he was succeeded by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Robert de Cotte.
The towers frame the west façade, a pure product that applies all the conventions of classical art, i.e. an Ionic facade with a peristyle mounted by statues of the Four Evangelists which replaced the original statues. The interior is decorated with pilasters, metopes and triglyphs, and the cathedral's strict and elegant vertical lines make it a typical example of classical architecture. A famous painting by Ingres, The Vow of Louis XIII, hangs in the north arm of the transept.

MONTAUBAN / MONTALBAN. A walking tour around the city / Un paseo por la ciudad
MONTAUBAN (Occitan: MONTALBAN) is a commune in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in the Occitanie region in southern France. It is the capital of the department and lies 50 kilometres (31 mi) north of Toulouse. Montauban is the most populated town in Tarn-et-Garonne, and the sixth most populated of Occitanie.
The town has been classified “Ville d’art et d’histoire” (City of art and history) since 2015.
The town, built mainly of a reddish brick, stands on the right bank of the Tarn at its confluence with the Tescou.
Montauban is the second oldest (after Mont-de-Marsan) of the bastides of southern France. Its foundation dates from 1144 when Count Alphonse Jourdain of Toulouse, granted it a liberal charter. The inhabitants were drawn chiefly from Montauriol, a village which had grown up around the neighbouring monastery of St Théodard.
In the 13th century the town suffered much from the ravages of the Albigensian war and from the Inquisition, but by 1317 it had recovered sufficiently to be chosen by John XXII as the head of a diocese of which the basilica of St Théodard became the cathedral.
In 1360, under the Treaty of Brétigny, it was ceded to the English; they were expelled by the inhabitants in 1414. In 1560 the bishops and magistrates embraced Protestantism, expelled the monks, and demolished the cathedral. Ten years later it became one of the four Huguenot strongholds under the Peace of Saint-Germain, and formed a small independent republic. It was the headquarters of the Huguenot rebellion of 1621, and successfully withstood an 86-day siege by Louis XIII. It did not submit to royal authority until after the fall of La Rochelle in 1629, when its fortifications were destroyed by Cardinal Richelieu. The Protestants again suffered persecution after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.
In the 17th century, the King of France revoked “l’Édit de Nantes”. Montauban was considered as an intellectual city. Because Montauban was a Protestant town, it started to resist and hold its position against the royal power and it refused to give allegiance to the Catholic King. To scare off the King’s opponents and speed up the end of the siege, 400 cannonballs were fired, but Montauban resisted and the royal army was vanquished. Saint Jacques church is still marked by the cannonballs, and every year in September, the city celebrates “les 400 coups” (the 400 shots), which has become a common phrase in French.
During World War II, Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa was briefly hidden in a secret vault behind a wine cellar at Montauban.

Built in the 13th century thanks to the sumptuary taxes levied on wealthy bourgeois, it bears the marks of a tumultuous Montalban history. After the Hundred Years War, the collapsed Romanesque vault is replaced by a Gothic vault and the flat chevet by the apse.
During the wars of religion, the Calvinists defeat the vault and the arrow. The octagonal tower of Toulouse style rests on a fortified base which still bears traces of cannonballs from the siege of 1621 by Louis XIII. In 1629, Richelieu sang the Te Deum restoring religious peace and ordered the reconstruction of the church of Saint Jacques.
Above the neo-Roman portal of the nineteenth century is the mosaic representing the vision of Ezekiel of the same period. The single nave, of Southern Gothic style, is flanked by 3 chapels on both sides. Note that the second on the right is dedicated to Saint Jacques, patron saint of the church. It is the work of Joseph Ingres, the father of the famous painter. Next door, the carved wooden pulpit is baroque.

The Vieux bridge is a bridge that crosses the Tarn at Montauban in Tarn-et-Garonne. The city of Montauban was founded in the xii th century by the Count of Toulouse Alfonso Jordan is at war against the Duke of Aquitaine William IX . The abbot of Montauriol is favorable to the duke of Aquitaine. Having bought a very large lot on the plateau overlooking the Tarn, the count decides to seize it to create a new city. It takes the name of Monte albanus , mont blanc or Mont des étrangers, become Montauban .
To protect the new inhabitants from abusive actions of the abbots of Montauriol and the feudal lords, the count of Toulouse grants them its protection and a charter of foundation dated October 9, 1144 indicating that the inhabitants of the place will build a bridge on the Tarn. And when the bridge is built, the lord count will agree with six prudhommes, the best councilors, inhabitants of the said place, on the rights they will have to establish, so that said bridge can be maintained and repaired .
The high cost of building the bridge exceeds the financial possibilities of the inhabitants of the city. The city bought the land needed for construction in 1291. In 1304 , Philippe Le Bel ordered its construction. He promises a grant for a bridge to include three good and strong towers and reserves ownership and custody. To finance the work, taxes are created until the end of the construction: tax on all foreigners crossing the city, special taxation applying on Quercy and Toulouse.
The project management of the bridge was entrusted to Étienne de Ferrières, royal lord of Montauban, and Mathieu de Verdun, bourgeois of the city. The bridge construction site is open onJanuary 19, 1311. The surviving written evidence shows that at the beginning of the construction site some of the city's rude officials would have diverted part of the royal subsidies and tolls, and would have refused to participate in the construction of the bridge. Since theAugust 8, 1311, the seneschal of Quercy goes on the spot with two judges, Bernard Gervais and Mathieu de Courtes-Jumelles, sent by the king to examine the progress of the bridge and the use of the collected taxes. The latter makes a report accusing the embezzlers of diversion of subsidies and materials intended for construction. The consuls were ordered to participate in the construction of the bridge and pay the taxes set.
The death of the king in 1314 resulted in the application of the decisions to February 1315. In the presence of the royal commissioners, a joint assembly of the Council of Consuls and the General Council of the city designates four of its members to study the progress of the bridge and expert advice on the duration of the work. They estimate the duration of the works at 20 years and the need to extend the royal commission fees within this period.
The work seems to resume normally but a new dispute appears between the seneschal of Quercy who returns with Mathieu de Courtes-Jumelles and the consuls. The parliament of Paris decides to put under supervision of the king the consulate of Montauban. The king then decides to suspend the consulate and dismisses the culprits with a sentence to pay 20,000 pounds and 1,000 pounds of damages to the judge of Quercy. Étienne de Ferrières and Mathieu de Verdun were dismissed in 1319. They were replaced by Fabris de Montauban and Delpech from the suburbs of the city. In 1323, the consulate is restored. Étienne de Ferrières was rehabilitated in 1321 and Mathieu de Verdun soon after.
The completion date of the bridge is not exactly known due to the loss of part of the city's archives. It is admitted that it is finished in 1335 . It has two towers placed at the ends. The original project planned three towers, but the tower that was to be built in the middle of the bridge, the king's tower, was not executed for some unknown reason. Like the Pont Saint-Bénézet in Avignon , he then has a chapel, dedicated to Saint Catherine
