A Walk Around Place du Parlement, Bordeaux, France
Place du Parlement Thus named in commemoration of the Bordeaux Parliament that existed from the 15th century to 1790, when it was dissolved definitively in the revolutionary fervour that had gripped France.
This is one of the most beautiful squares in Bordeaux, designed in the Italian style with an elegant fountain in the centre. If you place yourself by the fountain and look at the buildings that form the square, you will notice some sculpted stone heads that can actually be found in their thousands all over the city. These are called mascarons.
Like much of the city, the grand buildings in this square date from the 18th century (the fountain came one hundred years later.
Place du Parlement is right in the heart of the old town, and it’s lined with restaurant terrasses where locals and tourists love to sit in the open air and soak up the atmosphere.

The Parliament Square is in the city center of Bordeaux. It was built in an Italian style in 1760. It is lined with old buildings, dating from the 18th century, with opulent facades, recalling the glorious past of the city.
She has changed her name several times over the history of Bordeaux. When it was created, it was called the Place du Marché Royal. At the Revolution, it was renamed symbolically Place de la Liberté. Later, it was again renamed Parliament Square in honor of the former parliament of Bordeaux, destroyed in 1790.
In 1980, its soil was covered with golden limestone slabs during renovation work. In the center, you can see a fountain dating from 1865, made by Louis-Michel Garros, an architect of the city. It is neogothic style, decorated with masks. These are typically Bordeaux ornaments that feature fantastic creatures or carnival faces, usually accompanied by the gods Neptune and Bacchus.

A Walk Around Place du Palais & Cailhau Gate Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France
If you follow the river down to your right, you will discover what is known to the locals as Port Cailhau. Once, the main entrance to Bordeaux, this beautiful gate is what is left of Palais de l’Ombrière. It was used as a residence for the dukes of Aquitaine as well as a Parliament during the 15th century.
When the original door was built and used the wharves did not exist, so small boats were used to load and unload commodities through the gate from the ships ported there. The current door was erected between 1493 and 1495, closer to the Garonne. What is interesting about the gate, are the bundles of little fascinating details on it and all the stories that come with them.
For example, take a close look at the side Porte Cailhau overlooking the square (not the river) when you get there. Do you see something that is not quite right? Like slots for weapons that are directed towards the city? Yes, that has a reason. It has something to do with a duchess, the French and the English.

Place de la Bourse is a square in Bordeaux, France and one of the city's most recognizable sights. Built from 1730 to 1775 along the Garonne River, it was a multi-building development designed by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel. It is within the historic part of the city that has been recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble of the 18th century.
In the original plan, a statue of King Louis XV of France was erected in the square. This statue was destroyed during the French Revolution. After the destruction of the statue, a Corinthian column-fountain was built on the square. Finally, in 1869 the sculpture Three Graces was installed in the same location.
Design of the surrounding buildings was finished by Ange-Jacques Gabriel in 1739; the project was issued for construction two weeks after the architect's death. After his death, his son was put in charge and finished the construction of the buildings.
This square is one of the most representative works of classical French architectural art of the eighteenth century. In the north stood the Palais de la Bourse (current Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Bordeaux) and in the south the Hotel des Fermes (now Interregional Directorate of Customs and Indirect Rights, which houses the National Museum of Customs). It was designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel between 1735 and 1738. The sculptures represent Minerve protecting the arts and Mercury favoring the commerce of the city.
In 2007 it was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble of the 18th century.

If you're wondering what to See in 1 Day, join us for this 4k virtual tour of Bordeaux on the Garonne River in southwest France. Experience local life on as if you were there. Do let us know your thoughts and tips below, we always welcome them.
Filmed in April, we start our slow tv walking tour in front of the iconic La Grosse Cloche (Great Bell) on Rue Saint-James just off Cours Victor Hugo.
Rue Saint-James is just one of many streets we'll wander where you'll find great coffee shops, restaurants and independent boutiques.
We enter Place Fernand Lafargue, a popular area for nightlife before turning right onto Rue Sainte-Colombe with it's shaded outdoor bars. Turning up Rue du Pas-Saint-Georges, and then Rue du Palais de l'Ombrière, we discover Place du Palais, site of Porte Cailhau - the historic gate with it's incredible facade.
This impressive arch leads us out onto the Quai Richelieu - and the banks of the Garonne River. Here we see the Pont de Pierre (Stone Bridge) that connects the East and West sides of the City.
We follow the river, though not as far as the Place de la Bourse and
Le Miroir D'Eau - instead our walk takes us back across the road by the Charles Dickens Pub and along Rue de la Cour des Aides to the
site of Église Saint-Pierre. This church is surrounded by great places to eat, drink and be entertained.
We follow Rue Parlement Saint-Pierre to Place du Parlement with it's much photographed fountain before heading to Rue Sainte-Catherine, Bordeaux's mots famous shopping street and often said to be the longest pedestrian street in Europe.
We finish our walk by visiting Place de la Comedie, seeing the Opéra National de Bordeaux on our right, the Intercontinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hôtel on our left (Bordeaux's most famous hotel) and seeing Carrousel Palace 1900, the city's colourful merry-go-round attraction on Allées de Tourny.

La place des Quinconces est la principale place du centre-ville de Bordeaux en France. Créée au début du xixe siècle sur l'emplacement du château Trompette, elle est plantée pour moitié d'arbres, dont la disposition en quinconces lui donne son nom. Elle est composée d'une esplanade descendant en pente douce vers la Garonne encadrée au nord et au sud de plantations d'arbres. L'imposant monument aux Girondins et deux colonnes rostrales en décorent les deux extrémités. Sa superficie (12 hectares), qui en fait la plus grande place de France et l'une des plus grande d'Europe, lui permet d'accueillir des manifestations telles que des concerts et des foires, notamment la foire aux plaisirs (une fête foraine) et la foire d'Automne (brocante). Depuis la mise en place du réseau de tramway, la place est devenue la plus importante station de correspondance du réseau de transports en commun de Bordeaux.

The city of Bordeaux is among France's most exciting, vibrant and dynamic cities. In the last decade and a half, it's shed its languid, Belle au Bois Dormant (Sleeping Beauty) image thanks to the vision of city mayor Alain Juppé who has pedestrianised boulevards, restored neoclassical architecture, created a high-tech public transport system and reclaimed Bordeaux's former industrial wet docks at Bassin à Flots. Half the city (18 sq km) is Unesco-listed, making it the largest urban World Heritage site; while world-class architects have designed a bevy of striking new buildings – the Herzog & de Meuron stadium (2015), decanter-shaped La Cité du Vin (2016) and Jean-Jacques Bosc bridge (2018) across the Garonne River included.
Bordeaux is often referred to as Little Paris and the rivalry between the Bordelais (people from Bordeaux) and Parisiens is a hot subject, so you may experience some heated arguments on the subject during your stay. Bordeaux is a flat city, built on the banks of the Garonne River. It is also the largest French city by area and geographically one of the largest in Europe. The Garonne merges a dozen kilometers below the city with another river, the Dordogne River to form the Gironde Estuary, which is biggest estuary in France..
Bordeaux is a historic city with many tourist attractions. The main districts are briefly presented here, which are listed according to their distance from the railway station. Les Quais— Great for going for a nice walk on the shores of the Garonne, enjoying a ride on a ferry boat, viewing a stunning landscape over the bridges of Bordeaux, or dancing the night away in the city's many nightclubs. The Aquitaine Bridge is an architectural achievement unique in France. The Jacques-Chaban-Delmas lift bridge ; located between the Quais and the Aquitaine bridge. Opened in 2013, it features a liftable deck, which goes up to 53 meters (170 ft), to enable cruise ships and historical sailboats to dock close to the Quinconces Square.

The Pedestrian Center — If you plan on shopping, or are looking for cultural activities, Bordeaux has a lot to offer - and it starts right here. Gambetta Square — The rich districts of Bordeaux start north - this part of the town is nicknamed Little Paris. Quinconces Square — Be sure to check out the fountain monument to the Girondins, a group of moderate, bourgeois National Assembly deputies during the French Revolution.
Meriadeck — The administrative center of Bordeaux, with one of the biggest libraries in France. Do not miss the Victory Arch (Roman architecture), at the center of La Victoire and a great example of the town's Roman roots. Relax and take a picnic in the lush Public Gardens, north of Gambetta square. The Girondins memorial on the Quinconces square is a fitting tribute to the Members of Parliament from Gironde who were guillotined by Robespierre.
Musee D'Art Contemporain at 7, rue Ferrère. Definitely worth a visit if you are interested in Modern Art. Musee D'Aquitaine, 20, cours Pasteur. Stunning museum that exhibits Gallo-Roman statues and relics dating back 25,000 years. Musee national des douanes (Customs National Museum), 1 place de la Bourse. 10AM - 6PM.Tue-Sun. a historical museum of the french customs administration.

The Pont de pierre, or Stone Bridge in English, is a bridge in Bordeaux, which connects the left bank of the Garonne River to the right bank quartier de la Bastide. Connecting the left and right banks of the Garonne, commissioned by Napoleon and inaugurated in 1822, the pont de pierre was the first stone bridge ever built in Bordeaux.
Until then, it was necessary to cross the river by boat.
The bridge has 17 spans... which is also the number of letters in the name Napoleon Bonaparte. The pont de pierre was the only bridge to connect the city's historic centre on the left bank and the La Bastide district on the right bank for nearly 150 years.
Today, it is crossed by an ultramodern tramway and is one of half a dozen bridges. The pont de pierre nevertheless has a special place in the hearts of the Bordelais, who admire its elegance. The also scrutinise the bridge's piles to ascertain the level of the tide.
The Garonne in Bordeaux, located 100 km upstream from the Atlantic, constitutes the legal frontier between the maritime domain and the river domain. Furthermore, on windy days, you can hear the mewing of seagulls who have flown up the estuary.
The bridge « le pont de pierre » will be closed to traffic (in both directions) for two month, starting from August 1st . This is an experiment carried out in order to improve the city centre accessibility and the air quality. This measure is likely to be extended if assessments of traffic flows, travel times and air quality are encouraging.

Basilica of Saint-Seurin, the most ancient church in Bordeaux. It was built in the early 6th century on the site of a palaeochristian necropolis. It has an 11th-century portico, while the apse and transept are from the following century. The 13th-century nave has chapels from the 11th and the 14th centuries. The ancient crypt houses sepulchres of the Merovingian family.

La Grosse Cloche (15th century), the second remaining gate of the Medieval walls. It was the belfry of the old Town Hall. It consists of two 40-metre-high (131-foot) circular towers and a central bell tower housing a bell weighing 7,800 kilograms (17,200 lb). The watch is from 1759.
