Place de la Sorbonne, Paris, France
A very quick look at the place de la Sorbonne in the Latin Quarter of Paris, France, on a summer afternoon. The people giving free massages just happened to be there at the time, so I showed them, too, but it's more typical to see portrait artists on the plaza, if there are any people doing anything there. It's a nice spot to sit down and relax at a café.
La Sorbonne, Paris' oldest university. The center of Parisian student life.
The historic Latin Quarter remains today's center of Parisian student life. It's a vibrant patchwork of bookstores, cafes and restaurant. The neighborhood's youthful energy emanates from the Sorbonne, Paris' oldest university. If you enjoy seeing famous and beautiful places or if you are interested in classic architecture, you should add the Sorbonne to your to see list while in Paris. The university takes its name from Robert de Sorbon who created a college in 1253 that accepted students based solely on their intellectual excellence. This famous Left Bank neighborhood, spoke only Latin to their professors until the French Revolution. The 17th century brought change to the school. In an effort to bring new life to the old buildings, Cardinal Duc de Richelieu appointed architects to update the Sorbonne's structures. He became headmaster in 1622. The turmoil of the French Revolution forced the doors of the Sorbonne to close for a time. During the Restoration, Louis XVIII decided to restore the buildings of the Sorbonne to their original purpose, education. With its low key artsy cafés, quirky bookshops, stylish students, and the Sorbonne, the Latin Quarter is a bohemian charm.

Places to see in ( Paris - France ) La Sorbonne
Places to see in ( Paris - France ) La Sorbonne
The Sorbonne is an edifice of the Latin Quarter, in Paris, France, which was the historical house of the former University of Paris. Today, it houses part or all of several higher education and research institutions such as Panthéon-Sorbonne University, Sorbonne Nouvelle University, Paris-Sorbonne University, Paris Descartes University, the École Nationale des Chartes and the École pratique des hautes études.
The name is derived from the Collège de Sorbonne, founded in 1257 by the eponymous Robert de Sorbon as one of the first significant colleges of the medieval University of Paris. The university predates the college by about a century, and minor colleges had been founded already during the late 12th century. During the 16th century, the Sorbonne became involved with the intellectual struggle between Catholics and Protestants. The University served as a major stronghold of Catholic conservative attitudes and, as such, conducted a struggle against King Francis I's policy of relative tolerance towards the French Protestants, except for a brief period during 1533 when the University was placed under Protestant control.
The Collège de Sorbonne was suppressed during the French Revolution, reopened by Napoleon in 1808 and finally closed in 1882. This was only one of the many colleges of the University of Paris that existed until the French revolution. Hastings Rashdall, in The Universities of Europe in the Middle Ages (1895), which is still a standard reference on the topic, lists some 70 colleges of the university from the Middle Ages alone; some of these were short-lived and disappeared already before the end of the medieval period, but others were founded during the early modern period, like the Collège des Quatre-Nations.
With time, the college came to be the main French institution for theological studies and Sorbonne was frequently used as a synonym for the Paris Faculty of Theology despite being only one of many colleges of the university. After months of conflicts between students and authorities at the University of Paris at Nanterre, the administration closed that university on May 2, 1968. Students at the Sorbonne campus in Paris met on May 3 to protest against the closure and the threatened expulsion of several students at Nanterre.
In 1970, the University of Paris was divided into thirteen universities, managed by a common rectorate, the Chancellerie des Universités de Paris, with offices in the Sorbonne. Three of those universities maintain facilities in the historical building of the Sorbonne, and thus have the word in their name: Panthéon-Sorbonne University, Sorbonne Nouvelle University and Paris-Sorbonne University. Paris Descartes University uses also the Sorbonne building.
The building also houses the École Nationale des Chartes, the École pratique des hautes études, the Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne and the Bibliothèque de la Sorbonne. The Sorbonne chapel was classified as a French historic monument in 1887. The amphitheatre (Le Grand Amphithéâtre) and the entire building complex (façades and roofs) became monuments in 1975.

If you are a student in Paris one of the places you go to is the Pont des Arts.
On a summer evening it is full of young students seated on the wooden planks talking, playing music and enjoying their picnics.
If you are a new student in a foreign environment then this is where you can make your first friends.
