Plaka Forest - Kos Island, Greece
If you are traveling to Greece's island of Kos, take the opportunity to visit the beautiful Plaka Forest. Only 5 minutes south from the airport in Kos, this pine-covered forest is a magical place where male peacocks gather in a mating ritual to compete for females. Join David as he films this colorful, noisy event, with peacocks spreading their feathers, calling out to potential mates and boasting their striking attributes across the peaceful forest grounds. For both an up-close view of this natural wonder and a relaxing day amidst the shady pines, head to Plaka Forest during your trip to Kos. Plaka Forest and Antimachia Fortress by MTB, Kos Greece – Pal Mont
Welcome to a new episode of gorgeous Greek islands! We ride our bikes to an animal sanctuary hosting peacocks and cats and then reach the fortress of Antimachia, an impressive complex built under Venetian rule during the 13th century. This castle was so well fortified by the Knights of St. John that an Ottoman siege in 1457 could be repelled by just 15 knights and 300 inhabitants. Today, only the outer defence walls are still standing, as two earthquakes destroyed most of the buildings within them. A double checkpoint is in place at the entrance of the fortress: one old man strangely dressed and even more strangely behaving and a more serious looking guy a bit further on, both asking for money, supposedly for the maintenance of the fortress. However, no maintenance whatsoever has been done so far and we have some doubts about the honesty of this duo. Fortunately, there is always a back door ????
In the afternoon, we leave the fortress and take a dirt road towards the coast. The ride is rather bumpy, but a good alternative to going back the same way. At about 4 pm we leisurely stop for a refreshing swim, oblivious to the fact that we still have a LONG way to go.
After crossing a beach pushing our bikes in the midst of chairs and umbrellas, we realise we got trapped. What on the map appeared as a normal road, is in fact a series of steep walkways inside an exclusive holiday resort for German guests. A mountain bike guide quickly spots us as fish out of water and after understanding that it would be impossible for us to go back, kindly escorts us through the building complex until we find the exit and the public road, which finally leads us home with a beautiful sunset on the horizon.

The wild Peacocks at Plaka forest, Kos Greece
Went to Plaka forest during our trip to Kos, Greece in July 2015. Found lots of wild Peacocks there.
An Army of Peacocks in Plaka Forest, Kos
When you've had enough of the hussle and bussle of the city centre, there lies the Plaka Forest which is easily accessible. Situated near the village of Antimachia, on the way to Kefalos, the traveler may find a natural park with a growing population of peacocks.
A wonderful spot for relaxing along with the marvelous, exotic creatures – especially friendly to man – with terrapins and few squirrels. The Plaka Forest is full of pine trees, clean, cool water is derived by a spring and with many paths for endless walks. Those who will visit it, are going to experience a uniquely relaxing and peaceful atmosphere since the sound of nature enchants.

Peacocks at Plaka in the Sunken Forest on Kos Island, Greece
Here we are, five girls on holiday visiting the island of Kos in Greece. Today, 16th April 2013, we visit the Sunken Forest in Plaka which is off the road from Kefalos. After a long windy drive we arrive at the forest; full of pine trees and a warm welcome by very hungry peacocks and cats who mob us and surround the car with their cries echoing through the empty forest.
After stepping out of our vehicle the gang close in on us as we marvel at their beauty, but they are more interested in extracting food from us. We figure, with not too many tourists around and it being early in the season, the forest residents are clearly starving. So out comes the picnic we had planned for later. We throw handfuls of fresh baked bread to the hungry mob who ravenously gobble up the tasty morsels. Although no fighting between themselves some peacocks were a bit bossy with Susan when she tries to feed the little kitties a block of delicious cheese.
After awhile calm descends so we climb back into the car and try to decide what we will do for lunch when, perhaps as a thank you (well, we like to think that anyway), one of the males decides to give us a cabaret; an amazing courtship display. Enjoy the result!!!
PLAKA - KOS
If you are on your way to the beautiful sandy beaches in Kefalos stop by Plaka. A beautiful shady pine forest filled with natural beauty and inhabited by peacocks & cats! And should you cross the wooden bridge look for the terrapins in the pond below.
Many local animal charities aim to sterilise as many cats as they can. But this can prove difficult at times as many felines hide in thistle & brambles.
