Schladming is a small former mining town in the Enns valley of Styria (Austria), that is now a very popular large winter sports resort. It has a great view on the Dachstein mountains. It is a well-known European winter sports resort during the season, it is swarming with tourists from home and abroad. It held the 2013 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.
Planai is the most important mountain with many ski routes and the other popular place for skiers is Hochwurzen. Several shops and boutiques are located within the city limits and many restaurants, so called 'hüttes', are all around the city, mostly on the slopes. The inner old town of Schladming is small and easily traversed by foot. For skiing their are lots of lifts connecting the different mountains.
A bus service runs up and down the Planai and surrounding mountains throughout the year. Many ski lifts are on the mountains, some catering especially for small runs. The local peak for winter sports is the Planai. A six-seater cable car with a middle station takes tourists up the mountain. The Planai consists of many red and black slopes for competitive skiers, and many blue slopes for beginners, but generally the Planai is an intermediate to expert mountain. The Hochwurzen is the other mountain in Schladming. It has three main red runs off the four-man chair lift and a sledge run. This mountain is better suited to more experienced boarders and skiers. Also, a 15-man cable car can take groups of up to five to the top.
The surrounding mountains are popular with climbers and hikers and country lovers. In the summer, downhill toboggan runs and an outdoor swimming complex are open. From Salzburg , Schladming can be easily reached via the Tauern motorway (exit Altenmarkt) and the main road into the Ennstal valley. From Graz on the A9 to the exit Radstadt / Schladming / Liezen and over the Ennstalstraße.
In some places remains of city fortifications from the 17th Century have been preserved. The city museum deals with the mining history of the region, which is also reflected in the coat of arms of the city. The observation deck on the Dachstein and the Dachstein Ice Palace in the glacier are popular summer destinations. The Wild Water Trail was awarded in 2009 as the first National Geographic Trail in the world.
9 ski mountains in the region make Schladming one of the most popular ski areas in Austria. The centerpiece is the 4-mountain ski area (Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm) with 232 kilometers of pistes. Between Schladming and the neighboring municipality Ramsau am Dachstein stretches a plateau, which is perfect for cross-country skiing. There are more than 490 km of trails in the region. In addition, ice skating, snowshoeing and winter hiking are possible.
If one stays inside the old town there is no need for a car to reach the cable trains. Although cheaper recommendation are also found higher up on the way to the Planai middle station or on the other side of the valley. A large number of restaurants and cafés are located in the small old town, some are listed below. From the lodges Quellbodenhütte at Planai offers an relaxed atmosphere and some nice food. Hochwurzenhütte at Hochwurzen offers a very high quality food, refusing to sell french fries and other very high calories food. A local speciality is the Graukäse cheese, which is a special Steirerkas and is eaten on bread or with Nockerl.
