Beirut Travel Guide - Lebanese Charm
Beirut Travel Guide - Lebanese Charm
Beirut is the capital city of Lebanon with a population of approximately 2.1 million people in its metropolitan area. The city is on a relatively small headland jutting into the east Mediterranean. It is by far the biggest city in Lebanon. Due to Lebanon's small size the capital has always held the status as the only true cosmopolitan city in the country, and ever since the independence, has been the commercial and financial hub of Lebanon.
Beirut has survived a rough history, falling under the occupation of one empire after another,. Originally named Bêrūt, The Wells by the Phoenicians, Beirut's history goes back more than 5000 years. Excavations in the downtown area have unearthed layers of Phoenician, Hellenistic, Roman, Arab and Ottoman civilizations.
Beirut enjoys Mediterranean climate. Come in April to June for warm, dry days and long, cool evenings (15–25°C). Temperatures in July and August rise above 30°C and humidity can be somewhat overwhelming. Most areas of Beirut have a friendly atmosphere and Beirutis have a reputation for being very polite, friendly, sociable and outgoing. The locals are used to the sight of foreigners and many of them are happy to get to know you and even to show you around the city.

Beirut was once the self-proclaimed Paris of the Middle East. It still has an outdoor cafe culture, and European architecture can be found everywhere. Many Beirutis (as well as other Lebanese) speak French and/or English, to varying degrees, along with Arabic. Each district has its own sights and places to visit. The following listings are just some highlights of things that you really should see if you can during your visit to Beirut. The complete listings are found on each individual district page.

Lebanese cuisine is a mix of Arab, Turkish, and Mediterranean influences, and enjoys a worldwide reputation for its richness and variety as well as its Mediterranean health factor. Olive oil, herbs, spices, fresh fruits and vegetables are commonly used, as well as dairy products, cereals, fishes and various types of meat. A visit to Beirut includes the traditional Lebanese Mezze (Meza), an elaborate variety of thirty hot and cold dishes.
As the city is quite compact, walking is the best way of getting around, and perfect for getting off the beaten track to find unexpected surprises. Most people however will not walk throughout the city, rather they will walk within certain districts and take cars/taxis to get from one district to another. Streets are poorly signposted, often giving a number instead of the street name you will have on your map, and few Beiruti locals would know how to navigate according to their names.
There are lots of hotels in Beirut's metropolitan area, ranging from cheap hostels to luxury suite hotels. Prices and quality vary across the spectrum, but if you look well enough, there's bound to be the perfect hotel inside whatever budget you set.

The Future Begins Today
Dear Friends,
BETA is being sued for occupying a land that it does not own and is forced to relocate.
Today, BETA Shelters 800 dogs! Without your help these dogs face the possibility of being homeless again!
In 2006, the war ravaged the shelter that BETA was operating, forcing it to relocate to an abandoned pig farm. With very limited resources, BETA was able to transform it into a shelter that could welcome 150 dogs.
Over the years, the number of dogs fostered grew, as we couldn’t turn a blind eye to the mistreated and abandoned. Here we are, 13 years later, with a shelter caring for 800 rescued dogs.
The current shelter is far from optimal as dogs are not protected from harsh weather – heat or cold, the roofs sag, leak and sometimes even collapse.
The 150 Cats are similarly in desperate need of help.
Living in an Apartment transformed into a Shelter
On September 5th, 2018 we received an EVICTION NOTICE
We are being kicked out of the land we are OCCUPYING in a couple of month.
Fortunately, BETA had been working on a permit for a new shelter for the last 6 years and just received all the necessary authorization to start building on a new location.
The new shelter has been designed in accordance with international standards and will protect its inhabitants from cold and heat.
It will be home to all the animals that BETA cares for.
And will also facilitate adoption procedures and be environmental-friendly including solar panels.
However, building the shelter involves hard work and resources that BETA does not currently have, and this is why we need your help.
The construction of the shelter is estimated at $640000.
Even the smallest donations make a difference.
Let’s build them a shelter. Let’s build them a home.

Part I The Martyrs Smile
From Beirut to Bosnia is a three part documentary by Robert Fisk shown on the Discovery Channel focusing on Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt and Bosnia. It spans different nations and different peoples, but the problems and tragedies, the false hopes and betrayals, these are always the same. Muslims all over the world bear the brunt of Western foreign policy and local dictatorial rule. They pay the price of these policies and adventures with their land, freedom, property and lives. This mixture, of oppression, poverty and abuse has alienated millions of Muslims from their own governments as well as from some in the West. Today we witness a region on fire, plagued with instability. Robert Fisk analyses some of the root causes of the conflicts and tragedies we hear about daily.
This Films for the Humanities production focuses its capable eye on Lebanon's guerrilla war that aims to liberate southern Lebanon from Israeli control. The scope of this tragic conflict is brought into sharp focus in this documentary through the use of extensive interviews with participants from the Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad movements, views of civilian casualties caused by Israeli air attacks, and photographic evidence of the ongoing destruction of life and property in the region. The viewer should be advised that this video contains some disturbing scenes of this conflict.
