WAQRAPUCARA CUSCO - TRAVEL TO PERU
Waqrapukara is another wonder of Cusco that very few people experience due to it’s remote location overlooking the Apuirmac River Valley 3 hrs SE of Cusco near the farming town of Acomayo. Waqra means horn and Pukara is the equivalent of strength.
Fortress, sanctuary, astronomical observatory, Inca, pre-Inca? These are some of the observations and interpretations that have been made regarding this magnificent, enigmatic site 4300 meters above sealevel, surrounded by rough and overwhelming views and terrain.
The archaeological monument is surrounded by impressive platforms, squares and a forest of stones that resemble thrones of mythological giants contemplating the Andean landscape.
Waqrapukara is an archaeological monument and a marvel of engineering that combines natural rock formations with ruins built amongst them. Location, man-made magnificence and natural beauty will leave you feeling small yet awed by the sites at Wakrapucara.

Cusco - Peru Main Square, from the air - Inkayni Peru Tours
In Inca times, the plaza, called Huacaypata or Aucaypata, was the heart of the capital. Today it’s the nerve center of the modern city. Colonial arcades surround the plaza, which in ancient times was twice as large, also encompassing the area now called the Plaza Regocijo. On the plaza’s northeastern side is the imposing cathedral, fronted by a large flight of stairs and flanked by the churches of Jesús María and El Triunfo. On the southeastern side is the strikingly ornate church of La Compañía de Jesús. The quiet pedestrian alleyway of Loreto, which has Inca walls, is a historic means of access to the plaza. It’s worth visiting the plaza at least twice – by day and by night – as it takes on a strikingly different look after dark, all lit up.

The structure is built in such a way that a piece of paper can't fit between the union of the stones. This precision, combined with the rounded corners of the limestone blocks, the variety of their interlocking shapes, and the form of the walls lean inward, helped the ruins survive devastating earthquakes in Cusco.
The construction of Sacsayhuaman would have been initiated during the inca Pachacutec government, then continued during the government of Tupac Yupanqui and finished with Huayna Capac. this information can be extracted from ethnohistoric sources one of them wrote by Inca Garcilaso de la Vega,

Cuzco-Sacsayhuaman
Sacsayhuamán (also known as Saksaq Waman, Sacsahuaman or Saxahuaman) is a walled complex on the northern outskirts of the city of Cusco, Peru, the former capital of the Inca Empire. The complex is as many other Inca constructions made of large polished dry stone walls, each boulder carefully cut to fit together tightly without mortar.
Located on a steep hill that overlooks the city, it contains an impressive view of the valley to the southeast. Surface collections of pottery at Sacsayhuaman indicate that the earliest occupation of the hill top dates back at least a millennium.
Because of its location high above Cuzco and its immense terrace walls, this area of Sacsayhuaman is frequently referred to as a fortress. The importance of its military functions was highlighted in 1536 when Manco Inca lay siege to Cuzco. Much of the fighting occurred in and around Sacsayhuaman as it was critical for maintaining control over the city. It is clear from descriptions of the siege, as well as from excavations at the site, that there were towers on its summit as well as a series of other buildings. For example Pedro Sancho, who visited the complex before the siege, mentions the labyrinth-like quality of the complex and the fact that it held a great number of storage rooms filled with a wide variety of items. He also notes that there were buildings with large windows that looked over the city. These structures, like so much of the site, have long since been destroyed.
The large plaza area, capable of holding thousands of people, is well designed for ceremonial activities and several of the large structures at the site may also have been used during rituals. It is also clear from early accounts that the complex held a great number of storage rooms. Pedro Pizarro described storage rooms that were within the complex and which were filled with military equipment.
The best-known zone of Sacsayhuaman includes its great plaza and its adjacent three massive terrace walls. The stones used in the construction of these terraces are among the largest used in any building in prehispanic America and display a precision of fitting that is unmatched in the Americas. The stones are so closely spaced that a single piece of paper will not fit between many of the stones. This precision, combined with the rounded corners of the blocks, the variety of their interlocking shapes, and the way the walls lean inward, is thought to have helped the ruins survive devastating earthquakes in Cuzco. The longest of three walls is about 400 meters. They are about 6 meters tall. The estimated volume of stone is over 6,000 cubic meters. Estimates for the weight of the largest Andesite block vary from 128 tonnes to almost 200 tonnes.
Theories about construction of walls
The Inca used similar construction techniques in building Sacsayhuaman as they used on all their stonework, albeit on a far more massive scale. The stones were rough-cut to the approximate shape in the quarries using river cobbles. They were then dragged by rope to the construction site, a feat that at times required hundreds of men.The ropes were so impressive that they warranted mention by Diego de Trujillo as he inspected a room filled with building materials. The stones were then shaped into their final form at the building site and then laid in place. The work, while supervised by Inca architects, was largely carried out by groups of individuals fulfilling their labor obligations to the state. In this system of mita or turn labor, each village or ethnic group provided a certain number of individuals to participate in public works projects.
Although multiple regions might provide labor for a single, large-scale state project, the ethnic composition of the work-gangs remained intact, as different groups were assigned different tasks. Cieza de León (1976:153--154), who visited Sacsayhuaman two times in the late 1540s, mentions the quarrying of the stones, their transposition to the site, and the digging of foundation trenches. All this was conducted by rotational labor under the close supervision of Imperial architects.
Protzen, a professor of architecture, has shown how the Inca built long and complex ramps within the stone quarries near Ollantaytambo, and how additional ramps were built to drag the blocks to the construction above the village. He suggests that similar ramps would have been built at Sacsayhuaman.
Cusco Peru Travel Guide
Cusco Peru Travel Guide
Cusco, Cuzco or Qosqo located in the Southern Sierras is a fascinating city that was the capital of the Inca Empire. Cuzco is a Unesco World Heritage Site and is one of Peru's most visited cities as it is the largest and most comfortable city from which tourists can begin visits to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and other Inca sites in the region.
Cuzco is a beautiful city with well preserved colonial architecture, evidence of a rich and complex history. The city itself represents the center of indigenous Quechua culture in the Andes, and by merely walking the streets one sees the layers of history. Spanish colonial buildings erected directly atop Inca walls line the square, while the modern tourist nightlife flourishes in their midst.
The city is surrounded by a number of ruins, the most impressive being Sacsayhuaman, the site of the 1536 battle in which dozens of Pizarro's men charged uphill to battle the forces of the Inca. Nowadays, Cuzco is known for its indigenous population--often seen on the streets in traditional clothing--and its substantial tourist-fueled night life.
The Cuzco area has some extremely good international food with tasty options for all budgets. Best pizza ever at the end of the Av. La Cultura. Be sure to try an alpaca steak. Loads and loads of options in Cuzco to suit all budgets. Most won't need to be booked beforehand. Be careful if you're approached by someone on the streets offering cheap accommodation nearby the main plaza, as it's located in a very noisy area.
