Clare Davies – The Artist’s Map of Tehran, 1956-1966
In the mid-twentieth century, the contours of artistic practice in Tehran were shifting dramatically as the city expanded to the north and new cultural institutions were built in the urban center. An ink drawing on butcher paper executed by Hossein Zenderoudi (b. 1937, Iran) in this period doubles as a rudimentary map of Tehran’s evolving artistic hub: an area that housed the College of Fine Arts (est. 1940), the College of Decorative Arts (est. 1960-61), and recently opened galleries of modern art. Nearby, but beyond the borders of Zenderoudi’s handmade map, lay southern Tehran and its famous bazaar: an area increasingly identified at the time with a religious and socially conservative merchant class, the production of traditional arts and crafts, and political opposition to the shah.
This talk explores how the evolving topography of Tehran and its navigation by artists shaped avant-garde practices of the late 50s and early 60s. I argue, specifically, that a new generation of artists identified themselves with political networks and public religious rites based in the historic city, even as official and artist-run spaces for the arts multiplied elsewhere.
Clare Davies is the Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has contributed to a wide range of research, programming, and archival projects related to art and photography in the Middle East since serving as associate curator of the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo from 2004 to 2006. She is a graduate of the rhetoric department at U.C. Berkeley and completed her doctoral dissertation on Egyptian modern art at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts in 2014. She was subsequently awarded the inaugural Irmgard Coninx Prize Fellowship at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin.
She is the co-author of Robert Morris, Object Sculpture: 1960–65 (Yale UP, 2014) and has published regularly on contemporary art from the Arab world. Since joining The Met, she has overseen the installation of Yto Barrada's Lyautey Unit Blocks (Play) (2010), curated Siah Armajani: Follow This Line, and organized a scholarly seminar on collecting art from the Middle East. Upcoming projects include Rayyane Tabet / Alien Property–a collaboration with the department of Ancient Near Eastern Art, as well as Spiritual Pop: Art in 60s Iran.

Your model is a highly detailed and beautifully crafted rendition of Japan's classic standardised modern engine. Made by Japanese National Railways (JNR) from 1937 to 1953, the Noble Lady was built as an improvement on the earlier Class C55 locomotives. Each high-quality component has been superbly recreated to the original spec by De Agostini.
This incredibly detailed 1:24 scale model of the C57 Steam Locomotive is available to build in pay-as-you-build or full kit option, complete with a short length of track and base on which to display it. Mainly constructed from solid brass sheet and tube with a black finish, all the moving mechanical parts are made of precision die-cast white metal. The completed model is 860mm long (including the tender) and weighs over 10kg. The model includes working lights and wheels, as well as authentic whistle and steam sound effects.
We provide clear step-by-step instructions to show you how to assemble and finish the parts - every step of the way. Even if you've never tried this type of project before, you'll be able to put your C57 steam locomotive model together in easy stages, learning the skills as you go.

The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy
The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system.
A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment.
This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift.

The Wansbeck, The Hadrian & The Easter Highlander 29/30-03-2013
As the saying goes, there's always a first time for everything, and in this case this was the first time I had been to any of the locations featured in this video. This was another occasion where over the 2 days, everything 'nearly' went to plan.
We begin on Good Friday, where for the second year running, the railtour action was in the form of Pathfinder Tours 'Easter Highlander', a 3 night stay in Scotland including trips to Oban on the Saturday & Pitlochry on the Sunday. Having last year run over the WCML from Warrington to Glasgow, this time it was the turn of the ECML between Colton Junction and Low Fell Junction. Heading the train were DRS 37's 37607 & 37409 with 47853 attached to the rear at York, and the pair are seen storming through Northallerton right on time, at the same time as a tamper was reversing into the engineers sidings on the up side.
There was now 1 hour to get back to York for 61994 & 62005 running light engine to York NRM, and boarding the 1403 Edinburgh-Manchester Airport would take 20 minutes to reach York station, however this wasn't the case. It did seem a little strange overtaking 2 HST's that were meant to be 30 mins ahead between Thirsk and York running on the up slow, but later I found out that the lineside equipment had failed at Tollerton, and arriving at York 20 mins late, the K1 & K4 were departing platform 10 as my train arrived at Platform 3.
The next day was an early start by most standards, catching the 0654 from Preston to York then the 0932 from there to Newcastle. This gave me 2 hours to find the best possible shot of the King Edward bridge before 61994 & 62005 arrived. This ended up only taking about 20 minutes, so I went and took some still pictures before setting up with 1 hour to go. Once again the train was dead on time with the K1 at the head, seen accelerating across the bridge after departing platform 6 at Newcastle with the K4 clanking on the rear.
I did then attempt to give myself more time to change trains at Darlington by taking the Aberdeen-Penzance 221 from Newcastle, but 12 minutes to get back to the station was a rather tall order and I got back just in time to see the back end of the train rolling out of platform 4. I wasn't too fussed though as I just took the Inverness-Kings Cross HST instead down to Darlington, where the conductor of the Saltburn train waited an extra few seconds for people to transfer from the Kings Cross service, and what a good thing too. I had hugely underestimated the amount of hill climbing involved to reach Hunts Cliff, just outside Saltburn on the Skinnigrove/Boulby branch and so it took almost 40 minutes to reach the foot crossing just before the summit. The wind noise also turned out to be a small problem here too, but thankfully it died down enough for the shot to be used. With the K1 still at the head, the train was now around 20 minutes late but everyone had known it was on the way as the exhaust trail could be seen several miles away at Redcar. After the train had passed everyone walked over to the other side of the hill where there was a brilliant view of the next cliff, even higher than the one I was on. You could also see Crag Hall signal box and Skinnigrove Steel Works, along with the K4 next to the afformentioned signal box. Despite now being back on time the WCRC crew seemed to be in no hurry to leave Crag Hall at the booked time of 1602, and the train ended up leaving 20 minutes late aswell. However the sound coming from the K4 on the 1 in 64 incline away from Crag Hall was superb, and the train would have stalled if 62005 hadn't been providing assistance from the rear.
Because of the late running, I now had less than 1/2 hour to get back to Saltburn station, and although I was walking as fast as possible, for the second time in one day I managed to miss it by 30 seconds, which meant the planned shot of the Hadrian at Durham was out the window. The only place I could now reach in time was Darlington, so that's exactly where I went. The view however was a little restricted on account of the overall roof, and running 20 minutes late, there was very little light left when I heard 60009's whistle in the distance. Because the A4 wasn't doing much, everyone was treated to several blasts from the whistle instead.
Finally, credit must go to the driver of the Edinburgh-Manchester Airport train I was on board to get home again. After departing Darlington 28 minutes late with what seemed like no chance of catching either connection in Manchester, the delay was gradually whittled down between each calling point, resulting in an arrival at Manchester Piccadilly just 11 minutes late, giving me just enough time to get to platform 14 for the Blackpool train. It probably would have been a little better if the Blackpool train hadn't been full of loud people going home after a night out but hey, you can't have everything...

60009 Union of South Africa York Yuletide Express Norwich 2012
At 8:05am on Thursday 13 December 2012, LNER A4 60009 'Union of South Africa' pulled out of Norwich hauling the York Yuletide Express. The morning air was so cold, the steam lingered in the station, as can be seen on the departure. 60009 was leaving two minutes late, so the regulator was opened highly, and the steam from the cylinder cocks shrouded the platform, bathing us in steam. Unfortunately you don't get to see much of 60009 as she pulled forward, but the film captures the atmosphere of the steam age on a frosty winter morning.
60009 Union of SA glides out of King's Cross. Down Lindum Xmas Fayre. 08-Dec-2012.MOV
London & North Eastern Railway A4 Class No: 60009 Union of South Africa (UoSA), in BR Brunswick Green livery, gracefully departs London-King's Cross (KGX) on a bright but cold, late-Autumn morning as it heads the Down Railway Touring Company (RTC) Lindum Christmas Fayre from London-King's Cross to Lincoln-Central on the East Coast Main-Line (ECML) between London and Peterborough. It's Saturday 8th December 2012 and the time was 09:08. UoSA was following the 09:06 First Capital Connect (FC) Main-Line service from KGX to Cambridge. UoSA was on time. At the end of the film you can see the 08:28 FC Metro train popping out of Gasworks Tunnel.
Sorry it was wobbly but the Network Rail guys insisted we cannot use tripods. Also, sorry about the guy in the hat.
From KGX UoSA heads North down the ECML and makes its 1st pick-up at Potter's Bar. UoSA continues North making its 2nd pick-up at Stevenage. From Stevenage UoSA continues North then stopping at Holme Level Crossing for water. From Holme UoSA continues North making its final pick-up at Peterborough. After Peterborough UoSA turns North-East, off the ECML at Werrington Junction and takes the East Midlands route through Spalding and Sleaford to Lincoln-Central. Scheduled time of arrival at Lincoln is 12:45.
Trivia time. This was the 87th down main-line steam excursion of 2012 in the London area. By this stage last year (03-Dec-2011) 35017 had run the 94th . The difference in 2012 largely due to the Olympics. This was the 1st Down main-line run of 2012 by UoSA in London. Last year, UoSA was undergoing repair. It's the 28th Down RTC steam special in the London area in 2012. On 03-Dec-2011 RTC put on its 31st Down special from KGX to Lincoln-Central. Today's train was the 11th Down steam special to depart KGX in 2012. Last year, on 03-Dec-2011 70013 hauled the 7th Down Special out of KGX in 2011.
KGX is a 13-track, 13-platform station. There are 9 Platforms under the main train-shed. These are numbered 0 -- 8. On the Down side there is what is called the Metropolitan station with Platforms 9 -- 11. Main Line trains operated by FC, Grand Central, East Coast (GR) and First Hull Trains go in and out of Platforms 0 -- 8. Some FC main-line trains go in and out of 9-11 and Metro services, which only use KGX on weekends go in and out of 9 -- 11.
ECML services between 08:08 and 09:08 are 13 Down departures and 10 Up arrivals. The Down trains are 10 FC and 3 GR trains. 4 of the FC trains are Metro trains heading for Hertford-North, Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City (2). The 6 FC main-line trains head for Cambridge (3), King's Lynn and Peterborough (2). The 3 GR trains are long distance trains to Edinburgh (2) and Leeds. The Up trains are 8 FC and 2 GR trains. 4 of the FC trains are Metro trains arriving from Hertford-North, Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City (2). The 4 FC main-line trains arrive from Cambridge (2), King's Lynn and Peterborough . The 2 GR trains are long distance trains from Leeds and Newcastle-on-Tyne.
On 14th October 1852 the Great Northern Railway (GNR) opened KGX as the London terminus of its main-line to York that had opened 2 years before. In 1863 the GNR opened a link with the Metropolitan Railway and its trains started to go to and from Moorgate. In 1875 the GNR opened a 2-track local station. In 1893 the main physical change to the train-shed occurred when the GNR built and opened offices above the cab road on the Up side. In 1895 a lot of change took place including the opening of the 3-track Metro station, the loco yard and goods sidings next to the loco yard. In 1923 KGX became one of 3 London termini to become part of the newly formed London & North Eastern Railway.
Hope you enjoy and please comment.
Planning to film Tornado at Hampstead Heath on the North London Line later today.

SUMMARY
=======
England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. The Irish Sea lies northwest of England and the Celtic Sea lies to the southwest. England is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south. The country covers five-eighths of the island of Great Britain, which lies in the North Atlantic, and includes over 100 smaller islands, such as the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight.
The area now called England was first inhabited by modern humans during the Upper Palaeolithic period, but takes its name from the Angles, a Germanic tribe deriving its name from the Anglia peninsula, who settled during the 5th and 6th centuries. England became a unified state in the 10th century, and since the Age of Discovery, which began during the 15th century, has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider world. The English language, the Anglican Church, and English law – the basis for the common law legal systems of many other countries around the world – developed in England, and the country's parliamentary system of government has been widely adopted by other nations. The Industrial Revolution began in 18th-century England, transforming its society into the world's first industrialised nation.England's terrain is chiefly low hills and plains, especially in central and southern England. However, there is upland and mountainous terrain in the north (for example, the Lake District and Pennines) and in the west (for example, Dartmoor and the Shropshire Hills). The capital is London, which has the largest metropolitan area in both the United Kingdom and the European Union. England's population of over 55 million comprises 84% of the population of the United Kingdom, largely concentrated around London, the South East, and conurbations in the Midlands, the North West, the North East, and Yorkshire, which each developed as major industrial regions during the 19th century. The Kingdom of England – which after 1535 included Wales – ceased being a separate sovereign state on 1 May 1707, when the Acts of Union put into effect the terms agreed in the Treaty of Union the previous year, resulting in a political union with the Kingdom of Scotland to create the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1801, Great Britain was united with the Kingdom of Ireland (through another Act of Union) to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1922 the Irish Free State seceded from the United Kingdom, leading to the latter being renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
