Garden Gate: Episode 116 - Mary Philpott Ceramic artist (May 26, 2017)
Mary Philpott is a graduate Sheridan College, University of Guelph and MacMaster University. Her pottery, sculpture and tile work has been exhibited, collected and published internationally. She lives and works in Uxbridge, Ontario.
Mary's work is inspired by the work of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. Her work reflects the Flora and Fauna of her surrounding Landscape. The birds, rabbits, fox, sheep, dragonflies and flowers.
Mary is a full time Studio Ceramic Artist, designing tile and sculptures. Mary produces the original designs in clay and then creates a mold from each. She presses the tile into the mold by hand. Other tile suppliers that we carry press using a mechanical press usually with 20 or 60 ton pressure, but Mary does hers by hand. After they are pressed they need to sit in the mold for 3 or 4 days before they can go into the kiln. From there they are painted and re-fired. All in all a 6-8 week process!
Mary also produces unique sculptural pieces reflecting the animals and birds that she illustrates in her two dimensional tile.
Mary’s work can be found in many homes and galleries across Canada and the US as well as the UK.

URBAN DECAY CHERRY PALETTE LOOK OVER 50
Monochromatic makeup was popular in the 70's / 80's known as the matchy matchy look. This is where you use the same colour on eyes and lips. Being careful to not overdue it adding it to the cheeks also.
In this video I am using two new products to myself, one being the UD Naked Cherry palette and the other being the Mac Powder Kiss Lipstick in Shocking Revelation.
This monochromatic look is in style and is very popular in Hollywood at the moment. (Who knows how long it will last lol).
Have you every thought of wearing a look like this? Perhaps in a different colour? Let me know in the comment section.

Voter apathy ails Canadian politics
Canadian politics has been marred by instability in recent years.
This is the fourth time Canadians are voting in seven years for a new prime minister.
But with voter turnout shrinking with every election, the possibility of a stable government looks dim.
As a result there are fears the upcoming federal polls may throw up a minority government yet again.

How invisible and misunderstood fungi shape the world around us | Dr. John Klironomos | TEDxKelowna
Fungi are considered esoteric, mysterious and often dangerous organisms. However, they provide crucial ecosystem services, and Klironomos suggests that unless we better appreciate them, we will not be able to achieve sustainable land management.
Dr. John Klironomos is a Professor of Biology at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan campus) in Kelowna, BC, Canada. His research is focused on understanding the causes and consequences of plant and fungal diversity in terrestrial ecosystems. He is recognized for his studies on feedback between plant and fungal populations and communities, the effect of soil microbes on plant diversity and ecosystem services, the potential for microbes to enhance productivity in agriculture and forestry and to restore disturbed ecosystems. He received his training at Concordia University (B.Sc., 1987-90), the University of Waterloo (Ph.D., 1990-94), and San Diego State University (post-doctoral fellow, 1994-96). He then joined the faculty at the University of Guelph (1996-2009), and then relocated to the UBC Okanagan campus. He has been awarded over $20 million in research grants, has trained 53 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, and has published 149 peer-reviewed papers, including 8 papers in the leading journals, Nature and Science. He was recently President of the International Soil Ecology Society. He has received a number of fellowships and awards for his research in plant and microbial ecology, including the Harvard Bullard Fellowship, Humboldt Research Fellowship, NSERC Steacie Fellowship, and a Canada Research Chair in Soil Biodiversity. He was recently elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and presented with the Professional Achievement Award by the International Soil Ecology Society for outstanding contributions in research, student mentorship and service.

Art and Art History Presents: Beth Stuart
Beth Stuart
Tuesday, February 7, 2017
Beth Stuart works in an expanding range of media including writing, painting, ceramic, textiles, and sculptural installation. Often picking up on overlooked historical moments, characters and material techniques, she creates alternative plot points in the narrative of modernist abstraction. Improbable and conflicting ideologies form new negotiations, straight lines collapse, facts blend into feelings and hard structures dissolve into soft bodies.
Her talk will focus on the material and recent body of work, BLACKWHITEANDALLOVER, as well as her upcoming solo exhibition at The Power Plant in 2018.
Beth Stuart is a Canadian artist based in Toronto, Ontario. She holds a graduate degree from the University of Guelph, and an undergraduate degree from Concordia in Montreal. Notable recent presentations include a solo project at the Esker Foundation in Calgary Alberta, The Painting Project curated by Louise Dery at UQAM and More than Two: Let it Make Itself, curated by Micah Lexier at the Power Plant. In 2010, she was shortlisted for the RBC Painting Prize and in 2011 she received an honorable mention. She is represented by Battat Contemporary in Montreal.
