Exploring the beauty of Playa Del Rey, California 2011
Playa del Rey offers beautiful beaches overlooking the Pacific Ocean just a few miles north of Los Angeles International Airport. With downtown Los Angeles 19 miles northeast of here, this community and its neighbors, Westchester and Marina del Rey are desirable places to live and that means bargains in housing are hard to come by.
The residential community is built along streets that dead-end into a lagoon near the ocean and run on top of towering bluffs that have sand beach and ocean views. There's a bridge which passes over a river channel feeding into the ocean. It provides access to the Venice Beach and Marina del Rey to the north, but driving requires backtracking from the dead-ends and can take 10 to 15 minutes. The beach ends at a rock jetty and channel for boats entering the Pacific Ocean from the Marina del Rey harbor.
As lovely as Venice Beach, Playa del Rey seems less expensive to park at and appears to be one of those neighborhood beaches where locals might prefer fewer people knowing about their slightly tucked away treasure. Less visible than Venice Beach which has a pier, concessions, restaurants and skate and bike rentals, the photo above, right, provides a flavor of what this beach is like.. A man dressed in designer slacks lies on the sand, taking a noon time siesta. Children from a local parochial school wander over to the beach for volleyball games and other students sit in a park by the lagoon, enjoying lunch at picnic tables.

The last stop is Playa Del Rey beach:
Playa Del Rey Beach
Playa del Rey is a coastal neighborhood and a district of City of Los Angeles. The rolling hills are the result of ancient, wind-blown, compacted sand dunes which rise up to 125 feet above sea level, originally called and often referred to as The Del Rey Hills or The Bluffs.
These dunes run parallel to the coastline, from Playa del Rey, all the way south to Palos Verdes.
The community is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, Marina del Rey and Ballona Creek to the north, Ballona Wetlands and Playa Vista to the northeast, Westchester to the east, and Los Angeles International Airport and El Segundo to the south.

Marina del Rey falls within unincorporated Los Angeles County and is southeast of the L.A. City community of Venice and north of the L.A. City community of Playa del Rey, near the mouth of Ballona Creek. It is located four miles north of Los Angeles International Airport.
It is bounded on all sides by the City of Los Angeles. The beach-style homes, the strip of land against the beach, and the beach itself (see photo), west of the harbor, are within the City of Los Angeles limits, but share the same zip code as Marina del Rey. The name of this strip is the Marina Peninsula. Via Dolce and the southern portion of Via Marina are the boundaries between L.A. City and the unincorporated area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Marina del Rey has an area of 1.5 square miles Nine-tenths of a square mile is land and 0.6 square miles is water (40.91%).
The marina itself, a specially designed harbor with moorings for pleasure craft and small boats, is surrounded by high-rise condos, hotels, apartments, shops, and restaurants. The area also includes the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute and the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center.
The community is served by the three-mile-long (5 km) Marina Freeway (State Route 90), which links Marina del Rey directly to Interstate 405 and nearby Culver City.
The area codes of Marina del Rey are 310 and 424. Its ZIP code is 90292.

Playa del Rey, Los Angeles
SEE MY HISTORY GROUP ON FACEBOOK :
Playa del Rey lies beneath the Del Rey Hills, also known as the Westchester Bluffs on a flood plain (until 1824, the mouth of the Los Angeles River) which slopes gradually uphill north to the Santa Monica Mountains. The rolling hills are the result of ancient, wind-blown, compacted sand dunes which rise up to forty metres above sea level, with one prominent, steep dune running parallel to the coast, from Playa del Rey, all the way south to Palos Verdes.
The community is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, Marina del Rey and Ballona Creek to the north, Playa Vista to the northeast, Westchester to the east, and El Segundo to the south.
The northern part was originally wetlands, but the natural flooding was halted by the concrete channel which contains Ballona Creek. Before 1824, the harbour was the mouth of the Los Angeles River, before its course shifted to its current outlet at San Pedro. A bridge between Playa Del Rey and the jetty between Ballona Creek and the Marina is accessible to foot traffic and bicycle traffic, but not to automobiles. Bikers, skaters and joggers probably have the best chance of traversing the sidewalks of the beaches north to Santa Monica, and to the South Bay, here at this bridge. Both UCLA and LMU have crew teams that practice on the Ballona Creek channel.
In the 1870s, Playa Del Rey was the location of the first attempt at a dredged harbour in Santa Monica Bay. Under contract with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, Moye Wicks' syndicate spent USD300,000 to dredge Ballona Harbor, for shipping to the Orient. Within three years, winter waves brought flooding, but what remained of man's early efforts became the Playa Del Rey Lagoon, now a regional public park.
Development of Playa del Rey surged in 1928 with the building of the Del Rey Hills neighborhood in what is now the southern part of the community and move of then Loyola University to nearby Westchester. The area was the last stretch of coastal land in the city of Los Angeles to be developed.
A large portion of Playa del Rey is now vacant, and homes were destroyed, after the expansion of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) brought increased flight traffic. The noise from the flights made it less desirable to live on the dunes above the ocean under the LAX flight path. LAX bought the southern section of Playa del Rey under the power of eminent domain, eventually numbering 4,400 homes. Today one can see only barbed-wire fences protecting vacant land and old streets where houses once sat. Recent LAX rejuvenation plans call for the city to finally remove the old streets that still line the empty neighborhood once known as Palisades del Rey. The condemned areas of the community are now a protected habitat of the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly.
Playa del Rey in the 1950s and early 1960s was known as a great Los Angeles area surfing spot, but due to the many rock jetties that were built to prevent beach erosion, the good surf is mostly gone. The beach at the northernmost end of Playa del Rey is still known as Toes Over Beach, Toes Beach or just Toes by the local surfing community, a name derived from the toes over or Hang Ten surfing maneuver. Most surfers now flock south of Dockweiler Beach, to El Porto, the most northern part of beach in the city of Manhattan Beach. The lifeguard and park services are uniform across the entire twenty-mile stretch of beach.
One danger for beachgoers is the uncontrolled water runoff from the creek, and the occasional overflow from the giant Hyperion treatment plant to the south.
Locals refer to the small area of housing south of Culver Boulevard and closest to the beach as The Jungle, a nickname given to a group of closely built apartments built in 1956, within the bounding streets Trolley Place and Trolleyway Street on its east and west respectively, and including the streets Fowling, Rees, Sunridge and Surf. The small sidewalks between homes had/have deep green overgrowth, which added to the name.

A Weekend In Marina del Rey, Los Angeles, California
Our weekend Marina del Rey in Los Angeles County, California. It’s within walking distance of Venice Beach and only a short bike ride up to Santa Monica. Marina del Rey is the largest man-made boating harbour in the USA with approximately 5,000 boats.
We stayed for two nights at the Hilton Garden Inn which is close to the marina itself and 5 minutes from Marina Del Rey Farmer's Market.
The area is really close to Los Angeles Airport LAX so is a good place to stay at the start and end of your trip.

Police Pursuit on the Beach in Playa del Rey, August 3, 2019
Tonight at sunset in Playa del Rey a crazy guy driving a Toyota on the wet sand tried to evade the cops; only to get stuck near a jetty north of Dockweiler Beach. He then ran into the ocean and disposed of something in the water. The officers waited for him to get back out and arrested him.
Three LAPD helicopters and several patrol units involved; fortunately no beachgoers were injured.
Sorry about the jerkiness of the video; it was shot handheld with way too much zoom :-)
