Playa Esmeralda, Guardalavaca, Cuba

The awesomely pristine beach in front of the Melia Luna y Mares Hotel. Luna y Mares actually consists of 2 hotels, the Mares and the Luna. Mares is more upscale with the nicer beach. Luna is just to the right of and the beach does have some rocks and the end of the bay. Snorkeling is possible at the right of the bay, there are a few fish, also smaller lionfish and coral but nothing spectacular.

Playa Esmeralda is in the Guardalavaca region but isolated from the other beaches. Signs indicate it on the main road about a half-hour's drive from Holguin. You can just show up and book a night, or pre-book on their web site - as we did. All inclusive fun which is light-years removed from ordinary impoverished Cuba. Overwhelming and saddening at the same time.
