Snorkeling Playa Grande, Cabrera, Dominican Republic
Playa Grande is one of the nicest beaches on the north coast, but usually is too rough for good snorkeling. The best location is around the boulders on the east side of the beach but it can be very dangerous to go there except in the calmest weather. On a rough day, stick with surfing...

Playa Grande & Playa Preciosa Beaches Near Cabrera - Dominican Republic
A while back I had some time to kill so I thought I’d head out to Playa Grande for lunch and while there visit its neighbor Playa Preciosa. For those who’ve not been here for a while things have really changed. There’s been an upgrade would be putting it mildly. It’s pretty much our one stop shop when it comes to full service at reasonable prices. Check out the menu and see for yourself. Considering you’re on one of the highest ranked beaches in the world featuring great service in an uncrowded atmosphere all at very affordable prices sets the bar at a level few can compete with. We love living in a peaceful low density town so close to several similar beaches. Kind of gives us a reality check every time we’re on one of them. I have to recommend the parrot fish and garlic shrimp. Both are excellent and will only set you back about ten bucks. To stay connected and in the know why not subscribe to both the and web sites and YouTube channels. Both feature different perspectives of our region and the trending world that we live in. Enjoy!

Cabrera, Dominican Republic [VLOG 2017]

Playa Grande - Rio San Juan - Maria Trinidad Sanchez

Retire In Rio San Juan Dominican Republic - Retire In Caribbean - Playa Grande
Rio San Juan and the Playa Grande is the next stop on our tour of favorite towns to retire on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. This area of the North Coast (Rio San Juan and Cabrera) is a favorite with retiring Americans, Canadians and Europeans. Our favorite little village, Cabrera, is only 13 miles from Rio San Juan and either town would be a good choice for nice, peaceful home away from home.
The expats that have moved to this area of the North Coast always brag about: low cost of living, million dollar views at bargain prices, freshest organic foods and seafood straight off the boat, friendly locals and expats and a beach town without all the tourist congestion.
Rio San Juan has several things going for it, including two famous attractions that are unique in the Dominican Republic. First is Laguna GriGri which is a natural lagoon. You can take a small boat through the mangroves at Laguna Gri Gri and make your way to the mouth of the inlet and straight out into the calm seas. A very nice little trip.
The other thing that is unique is the nearby Playa Grande beach and resort complex. Playa Grande beach is a stunning crescent shaped white sand beach that has been a long time favorite of tourists, locals and expats alike. Sitting right next door, overlooking Playa Grande beach is the very high end Playa Grande resort development and the Amanara resort. Latest word is that the developers will be investing over a billion dollars in the Playa Grande resort build out.
With all the development in the area, smart investors and retirees are taking a close look at both Rio San Juan and nearby Cabrera. If ever there was a case for location, location, location.... then one can be made for this area of the North Coast. Come check it out for yourself on one of our Discovery Tours. No substitute for planting your own toes in the sand and talking to other expats that made the move before you.
Have the Food Prices Gone Up at Playa Grande Dominican Republic?
After saying goodbye to my latest visitors I wanted to chill out and order one of my favorite dishes at one of our local beaches. I just got done with back to back excursions and while I love every minute of it still it represents some long hours. It’s been a while since I’ve eating at the beach and I wanted to see for myself if the strong US Dollar represented some sizable upticks in the food prices. As you know when the dollar is strong and the Dominican peso is valued from it, it might cause prices to rise. It’s a fact that one of the best ways of curbing inflation is receiving US Dollars yet buying your items in Pesos. In a way it’s like evading the full impact of the nation’s inflation. It’s like hedging against inflation and it’s exactly what a forex trader lives for. Long ago I’ve learned to start thinking in net terms. At the end of the day it’s what’s left in the Levis that actually counts most. Anyways prices went up about a dollar fifty over the same time as last year. So here’s what I got for lunch. I had a serving of 14 nice sized garlic shrimp along with rice and beans and a Coke. The bill came out to thirteen dollars and change. Since the cost is totally subjective to the individual I’ll leave that up to those watching the video to determine value. Some might think it’s costly and others might think it’s a fair deal, either way they were locally caught non-farm raised shrimps and they were delicious… but then again that too is subjective. Until next time, Barry in DR.
