Lago Martianez, Puerto de la Cruz - Tenerife Canary Islands
The Lago Martianez is a fantastic, post-modern swimming and sunbathing complex designed by the famous Lanzaroteno architect Cesar Manrique. It's a bit concretey by modern standards but is still an awesome paradise which costs hardly anything to enter for the day (entry price includes sunbeds and parasols.)

Lago Martiánez is an open-air swimming pool complex located in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain). The leisure park with a total area of approximately 100,000 square meters is centered around an artificial lake. Lago Martiánez includes several islands, gardens, restaurants, bars, and terraces. Architect César Manrique designed the swimming pool complex, which features lots of volcanic rocks. Lago Martiánez is a mix of Manrique’s vision and local elements, such as bartizans, palisades and ocean views. In addition to the architectural structure, it also comprises a range of Manrique’s sculptures. Lago Martiánez, commonly known as el Lago, was built in the so-called Llanos de Martiánez area, which was home to several natural pools (such as la Coronela and la Soga). The first tourists visited Llanos de Martiánez at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century.
The project’s first stage involved the area of the municipal pools, formerly known as los Alisios. Engineer Juan Alfredo was responsible for the technical aspects, while César Manrique was in charge of the creative and artistic elements. Manrique combined his architectural spirit with the traditional architecture of the Canary Islands, incorporating flora and fauna elements, alongside authentic and innovative sculptures. ‘Los Alisios’ and la Jibia (cuttlefish) are two examples of such sculptures. Lago Martiánez was inaugurated in 1971, when its total area covered 8,000 square meters, and included two adult swimming pools, one children’s pool, and two bars (‘los Alisios’ and ‘la Isla’). The leisure park is equipped with technical-mechanical installations that are used for multiple purposes, such as filling the pools with sea water. Those facilities are incorporated in accordance with Lago Martiánez’ artistic character.
After completion of the first stage, the same technical and artistic team continued with the next phase in 1975, which ended on 30 April 1977. The second stage included construction of an artificial lake, shaped like a huge, green emerald, filled with sea water and surrounded by beaches, gardens and solariums. The artificial lake and its islands cover 33,000 square meters, including 15,000 square meters of water.
Between 2004 and 2006, Lago Martiánez underwent extensive renovations and improvements, including illumination of the pools and promenades. The Fundación César Manrique, which protects the artist’s works, supervised the works. The renewed park was inaugurated in July 2006. Sala Andrómeda, located on the lake’s center island, houses Puerto de la Cruz’ casino, which used to be located inside Hotel Taoro.

Puerto de la Cruz is a large tourist resort with a rich hotel and gastronomy base, located on the northern coast of Tenerife, and one of the most beautiful cities on the island. Despite being a big tourist resort, the city has preserved a typical Canarian character with historical and traditional architecture. The lush greenery, the enormous Teide volcano towering over the city, the elegant oceanfront promenades, swimming pools created by the brilliant architect Cesar Manrique, and the squares full of nice restaurants add to the charm.
Attraction is also the Beach Jardin - a large, beautiful beach with volcanic sand surrounded by lush vegetation.
In the city there are also theme parks, including the famous Loro Park and a large botanical garden. /

Places to see in ( Puerto de la Cruz - Spain )
Puerto de la Cruz is a city and municipality in the northern part of the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Puerto de la Cruz was formerly known by its English translation, Port of the Cross, although now it is known in all languages by its Spanish name.
Puerto de la Cruz is located on the north coast, 4 km (2 mi) northwest of La Orotava, and 30 km (19 mi) west of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The TF-5 motorway passes through the municipality. In Spanish the inhabitants are known as Portuenses. With an area of 8.73 km2 (3 sq mi), the municipality is the smallest in Tenerife.
Puerto de la Cruz occupies a prominent place in the history of tourism of the islands. The export economy established by the European colonizers after the conquest in the 15th century generated large commercial and passenger movements for decades. The first foreign visitors quickly felt drawn to the beneficial qualities of the weather in the Taoro Valley.
Before mass tourism existed in Puerto de la Cruz, minority tourism catered for privileged elites who were interested in climatology, botany and the tranquility of the location. The proximity of the Canary Islands to Europe meant that travel for health reasons was a primary driver for launching modern tourism here.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the environment of Puerto de la Cruz meant that it attracted many researchers and exclusive high-class groups from Europe. At this stage Puerto de la Cruz was a leading cultural center accommodating many travellers and writers, including William Wilde and Alexander von Humboldt Olivia Stone (Tenerife and its Six Satellites) . Puerto de la Cruz therefore gained an illustrious reputation in Europe, and when it came to the subsequent advent of modern tourism, the city was at an advantage compared with other tourist sites.
Tourism is an important industry in Puerto de la Cruz, as evidenced by the number of large hotels visible on the skyline. Puerto de la Cruz is frequented by Northern Europeans during the winter months, due to its mild climate, and is particularly popular over Christmas and the New Year periods. The Western European tourist contingent to Puerto de la Cruz tends to consist more of mature couples, in contrast to resorts such as Playa de las Americas.
