Old archive film of Louth, Lincolnshire
Louth Looks Back DVD highlights from Primetime Video.
Remember the Big Freeze of 1938 with its horse-drawn snow ploughs, and ice hockey on Elkington Lake? Or what about the repairs to Louth St James's in 1937, War Weapons Week in 1941, or the Soap Box Derby of 1963?
This archive DVD compilation includes dozens of scenes from the much loved Playhouse Newsreels, filmed by Bert Hallam and Bert Rawlings over half a century ago, together with a wealth of other motion picture material from the pre- and post-war periods.
There are the Lincolnshire Shows at Louth in 1936 and 1949, a Gyrotiller at work near Skidbrooke, the Newmarket Ropewalk, the Home Guard, of course, five local schools, even a pre-war production by the Operatic Society.
Colour scenes include Kenwick Fete in 1954, RAF Manby receiving the Freedom of Louth, 1963 Carnival Week, and some excerpts from the delightful 'Ramble Round Louth', featuring peaceful countryside near Legbourne, Cawthorpe and Tathwell, filmed in the fateful Spring of 1940.
50 minutes in length and available online from primetimevideo.co.uk

From The Camera of Peter Campbell
Peter Campbell died at the age of 53 in Dundalk Ireland on the 5th of May 1979.
Among the legacy of memories he left behind was a collection of short films he made between the mid 1960s
to early 1970s.
This video contains footage of an Armagh pilgrimage to Lourdes from about 1965
Comprising mainly of family members and some of his friends and neighbours mainly from the Father Murray Park and Saint Nicholas Avenue areas of Dundalk these films were typical of home movies of the period with poor quality footage and stilted action shots being very much evident.
Nevertheless they remain a little time capsule of events and people some of whom are no longer with us.
The video was made some years ago principally for viewing by family members and a few friends .
Arnold Loxam
Arnold Loxham playing the Louth Town Hall Compton
Arnold Loxam was a professional concert organist. He was a native of Bradford, Yorkshire and gave his first broadcast there as a child pianist in 1925. Loxam made his first appearance on the keyboard of the Wurlitzer theatre organ at the then New Victoria cinema in Bradford. Arnold Loxam first visited the New Victoria Cinema, Bradford, which later became the Odeon, when he was a 14-year-old member of the audience on the opening night of the theatre on 22 September 1930.
In 1946 he began playing regularly for New Victoria audiences and broadcasting from the theatre for BBC Radio. He was appointed deputy organist playing every Sunday and deputised for Norman Briggs until 1948. From December 1948 Arnold also played full weeks or odd days as well as Sundays. He was famous for his bouncy style. He gave his first solo broadcast on the BBC Theatre Organ on 29 November 1947.[1] The association with Bradford continued until 1962 when the BBC switched its broadcasts to the Leeds Odeon. Dr Loxam was invited back in 1968 to make a final broadcast from what had by then become the Gaumont before the Wurlitzer organ was taken to the North East Theatre Organ's headquarters in Howden-le-Wear, County Durham.
Loxam met his future wife in 1948 when she was working at the New Victoria as an usherette. Mrs Audrey Loxam was his driver for 25 years, chauffeuring him around to fulfil a busy schedule of engagements in this country and overseas. He has appeared in concert almost everywhere that it is possible to play in England, and has also played concerts in the Netherlands, Canada and the United States. North American audiences remember the Union Jack socks that he proudly wore at his concerts. In 1996 Arnold Loxam was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Bradford for his musical achievements.
Arnold Loxam died, aged 93, on 14 March 2010.

Places to see in ( Mablethorpe - UK )
Mablethorpe is a small seaside town in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. Mablethorpe as a town has existed for many centuries, although part of it was lost to the sea in the 1540s. For example, records of the Fitzwilliam family of Mablethorpe Hall date back to the 14th century. In the 19th century, it was also a centre for ship breaking during the winter. Mablethorpe Hall is to the west of the town along Alford Road. It is near the parish church of St Mary
Along with many small seaside villages and some inland towns and villages, Mablethorpe lost its railway station in 1970 because of the Beeching Axe. The old railway station is today the site of the town's sports centre. Stagecoach Interconnect 9 runs through the town, the half way point between Skegness & Louth. Generally an hourly service with summer Sunday services only operating between Skegness & Mablethorpe. Grayscroft Coaches operates numerous services from their base on Victoria Road in the town, including service 1 to Louth via Manby. Brylaine operates service 96/96A connecting Mablethorpe with Alford & Spilsby generally every 2 hours.
Mablethorpe is located within the East Lindsey council district of England. Mablethorpe is administered with Sutton-on-Sea and Trusthorpe as the civil parish of Mablethorpe and Sutton. The former parish of Mablethorpe covers a rectangular area inland along the A1104 Alford Road towards Maltby le Marsh as far as the boundary between the LN12 and LN13 postcode at Grange Leisure Park
One of Mablethorpe's long-standing traditions, its sand train, operates to take visitors to and from the northerly point of the beach. Mablethorpe's cinema, the Loewen, lies on Quebec Road. The cinema was previously known as the Bijou. The Dunes leisure complex lies on Mablethorpe's seafront. In 2008, the old Dunes Theatre became Sharky's Bar following a refit, however, in 2012 the complex was returned to its original state and branding. Mablethorpe has long been known for its traditional seaside amusement arcades.

GIRLS' GRAMMAR SCHOOL SPORTS
Louth, Lincolnshire, UK. 1938
Those taking part include Mums, Dads, little brothers, and - somewhat unexpectedly - a sheep. No one has yet heard of Adidas; the girls race and jump in blouses, ties and knee-length skirts.
NOTE: The titles 057, 063-072 and 074-098 comprise the entire surviving output of the late Bert Hallam and Bert Rawlings, who together produced local newsreels and featurettes for showing at Louth's Playhouse Theatre. Their productions are notable for their wry humour and first-hand knowledge of the people, places and events depicted. See today, they vividly recapture the life and atmosphere of a small market town during the last uneasy days of peace and the early stages of the Second World War.
When screened originally the films had live microphone commentary (often varied to mention specific patrons know to be present) with music and effects played in from discs, using multiple turntables. Virtually all the commentary scripts survive and are held by the Archive. After the war, the original tracks for several of the films were specially recreated by the original production team, and recorded. Also, in consultation with the late Bert Hallam, LFA has re-created tracks for a number of the other titles, using the original commentary scripts.
