History of Perth W.A. Cinemas
The first screen entertainment in Western Australia took place on July 29, 1853, when a travelling showman pitched a tent in Perth and gave a magic lantern show.
The first venues to offer films were ‘Ye Olde English Fayre’ at the corner of Hay and King Streets and the Cremorne Gardens at the other end of Murray Street.

More theatres were to follow, such as Cinema City and the Cine Centre. Hoyts also ran a number of small cinemas known as Hoyts Cinemas 1, 2 and 3.
Sadly, none of these venues, except His Majesty's (a live theatre), are operating today, with very little left to show that they existed.
This video covers the early venues used to show silent movies in Perth.
The switchover from silent to sound in the American film industry, which began in late 1927, was primarily complete by 1929 (though even in that year silent pictures continued to be produced, though at a heavily reduced rate).
In all, the silent film era lasted from 1895 to 1936. With Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times being made in 1936.
Sadly, a September 2013 report by the United States Library of Congress announced that a total of 70% of American silent feature films are believed to be completely lost.
This video was compiled by the WA TV History team for showing at a Australian Museum of Motion Picture and Television (AMMPT) meeting. Narration by AMMPT's Keith Rutherford.
2016 AMMPT visit to the Plaza Theatre in Perth
On Tuesday 2nd of February 2016, members of the Australian Museum of Motion Picture and television (AMMPT) visited the heritage listed, though dilapidated Plaza Theatre, also known as the Paris Cinema.
The group consisted of Roy Mudge, Keith Rutherford, Graeme Lacey, Graham Kahn, Gerry Voutsinas, Trevor Kelly, Richard Ashton and Ken McKay.
The purpose of this visit was to evaluate what was needed to remove two Philips DP70 motion picture projectors for restoration. These projectors were used to show the 70mm Todd-AO movies such as Around the World in Eighty Days, South Pacific and others during the late 1950s.
The DP70 was truly a remarkable 70mm projector and on Monday April 8, 1963 Fred J Pfeiff, technical manager of the motion picture equipment department of Norelco (North American Philips), received the 1962 Class 2 Oscar plaque on behalf of the Philips company:
The DP70 projector was suitable for:
1. 70mm film provided with any number of magnetic sound tracks
2. 70mm film with separate sound film.
3. CinemaScope film provided with four magnetic soundtracks.
4. CinemaScope film provided with optical sound tracks or Perspecta Sound.
5. Wide-screen films of any size, provided with magnetic or optical sound tracks.
6. Normal 35mm films.
7. 3D films according to the single film system
8. 3-D films according to the twin-film system.
The heritage listed Art Deco Plaza Theatre opened in 1937.
It offered a new level of comfort for Perth movie-goers and later with the swath of blockbuster movies leading into the 1960's, it became Hoyts premier cinema in Western Australia, showing 70mm Todd-Ao extravaganzas.
The Plaza underwent an extensive upgrade in 1965 and was re-named the Paris Cinema.
Hoyts relinquished their lease to the Ace Theatre group, when the Hoyts cinema that replaced the Ambassadors was turned into twin cinemas, in the mid 1970s, bringing with it an era of expanding multi-screen complexes, finally the Paris Cinema was shut down in 1984, briefly becoming a youth disco.
During the 1970s, the late cinema and television veteran Ken Alexander made a film record of Perth cinemas in threat of closure or demolition.
These included the Ambassadors, Capitol, Metro, Royal, Plaza (Paris), Grand and Cinema City
Ken's footage was compiled into a program called Great Picture Palaces of the Past.
Part of this consisted of Alison Fan interviewing veteran projectionist Eric Nichols about the Plaza's history.
More of Ken's footage can be found on YouTube as…. Ambassadors a Lost Cinema Heritage
Where the late Run Tutt kindly provided a good supply of colour photographs of the Ambassador's interior which were incorporated with Ken's footage.

Speculation has surrounded the identity of an unnamed international group that will take up residence in a revamped Plaza Arcade, plans for which went up for planning approval last month.
However, minutes from that Development Assessment Panel meeting show it was attended by two representatives from Uniqlo Australia.
The Plaza Arcade is facing a $6 million overhaul that would involve closing a portion of the arcade on the Murray Street Mall frontage to create a single retail tenancy over three levels.
Uniqlo has long been rumoured to be eyeing space in Perth, following the likes of Zara, Topshop and H&M.
British retailer Superdry revealed last week it was setting up its first Perth store in Hay Street mall. It will open on the ground floor of the Savoy Hotel building.

More information on Rundle Mall from Wikipedia
Rundle Mall is a pedestrian street mall located in Adelaide, South Australia. It was opened as a pedestrian mall in September 1976 by closing the section of Rundle Street between King William Street and Pulteney Street, to vehicular traffic.
The street continues as Rundle Street (as before) to the east and Hindley Street to the west.
The pedestrian mall has become the centerpiece of Adelaide's city centre, home to some of the most expensive real estate (per square metre) in the state. It competes with the large shopping complexes in the suburbs, (e.g. Westfield Marion, Centro Arndale, Elizabeth Shopping Centre, etc.)
In 2009, retail space directly on the mall leased for up to $3,700 per square metre per year.
The mall is home to the South Australian flagship stores of many large Australian retailers and a large number of smaller independent and chain stores.
The mall also features a number of arcades and plazas containing smaller boutiques and eateries. These include the Italianate styled Adelaide Arcade (also being the first retail establishment in Australia with electric lighting, and allegedly home to six ghosts), Regent Arcade, Gay's Arcade, City Cross, Southern Cross, Adelaide Central Plaza, Myer Centre, Renaissance Arcade, and Rundle Place.
There are usually several buskers performing in the mall, licensed by the Adelaide City Council. The mall's stores are generally open seven days a week.
Rundle Street, from which the mall takes its name, is named after John Rundle, a member of the British House of Commons and an original director of the South Australia Company.
The street was named on 23 May 1837 by the Street Naming Committee. In 1895, the first electric street lighting was installed at the intersection of Rundle Street (as it was then), King William Street and Hindley Street. It also had a tramline run through it when it was still part of Rundle Street.
In November 1972, the then South Australian Premier, Don Dunstan, issued the closure of the western part of Rundle Street to create Rundle Mall, due to extreme congestion caused by traffic and the increasing number of pedestrians.
Other than Police and other government vehicles, drivers need permission to drive on the pedestrian strip. The mall is a dry zone as well as a smoke-free zone.
There are several items of modern sculpture in the mall. The best-known is the 4 metre tall The Spheres by Bert Flugelman; two large stainless steel spheres with a diameter of 2.15 metres balanced one on top of the other.
They are most commonly referred to as the Mall's Balls or Rundle Mall balls. The Mall's Balls are a common meeting place for visitors to the mall.
Erected in 1977, they were commissioned by the then Hindmarsh Building Society (subsequently absorbed into the Adelaide Bank) and donated to the City of Adelaide to mark the building society's 1977 centenary.
Other sculpture includes a group of life-size bronze pigs − Horatio, Truffles, Augusta and Oliver - rooting around a rubbish bin.
Of note is the historic Beehive Corner, completed in 1896. It lies at the western end of the Mall, on the corner of King William Street, and was originally owned by John Rundle.
Beehive Corner is built in the Neo-gothic style, which is generally reserved for churches. The Mall also contains a fountain (The Fountain) that is painted in Victorian colours and was cast in the late 1800s.
Not to be left in the dark, Rundle Mall also boasts the ELITEM Rundle Mall Super Screen—a 35SQM P12 LED display which broadcasts city and state notices as well as other local business messages.
Another noteworthy large lighting display is the Rundle Lantern which marks the eastern end of Rundle Mall and the beginning of Rundle Street.
Hope you guys learnt something new - if you're still reading this include the word Balls in your comment :)

Mooroolbark Terrace - A community shopping centre stuck in time
This is Mooroolbark Terrace, an Australian shopping centre that hasn't changed significantly since it opened in 1982.
This is my first video in this style, and I'd love to hear your feedback on what you liked, and what you didn't like about it. I intend to produce more videos in the future on this channel, so please look forward to them!
***CORRECTIONS***
Since this video went live, two pieces of information have come to light:
- Coles don't own stores in the Terrace. Rather, the owner of the building that they lease for their Mooroolbark store owns the stores
- The building may have been constructed by a company named Permian and Wright, with the strata title coming in at a later date.
