Plaza Mayor de Almagro is a town square located in the city of Almagro, Castile-La Mancha, Spain. Amalgro is designated a conjunto histórico, and the square is of architectural interest. It is the location of the city hall and a historic theatre, the Corral de comedias de Almagro.
Amalgro is a name of Arabic origin referring to the local red clay, which is one of the materials used in the plaza mayor. Probably the settlement began as a small Muslim castle, possibly on the site now occupied by the hermitage of San Juan. The fief was bestowed on Gonzalo Yáñez de Noboa, ninth Grand Master of the Order of Calatrava, after the Battle of the Navas de Tolosa, and the grant was confirmed by Ferdinand III in 1222. Amalgro became an important centre for the Order of Calatrava and the area which became known as Campo de Calatrava.
The medieval plaza mayor was redeveloped by the Fugger family, German bankers who under Charles V acquired considerable possessions in Spain and its empire. During the 16th and 17th centuries they had concessions on mines in La Mancha, including the important mercury mines of Almadén, in return for loans to the Spanish government. It was under their influence that the architecture of the square took on its present form with the distinctive galleries along two sides.

Almagro is a town and municipality situated in Ciudad Real province, in the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha, Spain. A tourist destination, Almagro is designated a Conjunto histórico, a type of conservation area.
Almagro lies within small Paleozoic mountain ranges, with some reserves of shallow creeks, including the Pellejero and de Cuetos. Almagro also lies within a volcanic zone (Cerrro de la Yezosa), which lies upon a quartzite massif. It makes the zone particularly unique, together with that of the zones of Olot and Cabo de Gata, in the sense that it is one of the few important zones of volcanic origin in the Iberian Peninsula. An International Festival of Classical Theater has also been celebrated here annually since 1978.
During the 1950s, the Corral de Comedias was discovered and restored. The Town Hall and Plaza Mayor were also restored. In 1972, Almagro was declared a Historical-Artistic Zone (Conjunto Histórico-Artístico). Numerous buildings were restored, including churches, palaces, houses, and hermitages. The Museo del Teatro (Theater Museum) was established in a spot near orchards and wine cellars; a special building was later built for it. Almagro became a center for the dramatic arts in the region, and the International Festival of Classical Theater (Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico) was put on here. Almagro is a candidate for becoming World Heritage Site.
During the Peninsular War, an active Bonapartist masonic lodge was established in Almagro. The town suffered during the Carlist Wars and the sale of church lands by Juan Álvarez Mendizábal and Pascual Madoz. During the 19th century, the town faced competition from Ciudad Real and Bolaños de Calatrava. Almagro built a Plaza de Toros (1845) from materials originally from the stone tower of the ancient parish church of San Bartolomé, which had been demolished in 1845. The bullfighter Cagancho would later compete in this stadium.
Almagro is also famous for a variety of small aubergines, berenjenas de Almagro, seasoned and pickled according to a traditional recipe. These are usually eaten as a snack, along with other tapas, such as banderillas. An International Festival of Classical Theater has also been celebrated here annually since 1978.

La storia di questa località della Mancia è strettamente legata alla storia del teatro, come possiamo vedere nel Corral de Comedias, il Museo Nazionale del Teatro e il Festival Internazionale che si tiene tutti gli anni.
Almagro, capitale del Campo de Calatrava, è molto legata a quest’ordine religioso, di grande importanza politica durante il Basso Medioevo. Il declino dei cavalieri di Calatrava, ma non della città, inizia quando Fernando il Cattolico espropria i beni dell’Ordine militare a favore della corona di Castiglia. I banchieri dell’imperatore Carlo V, come i Fugger e i Welser, si insediarono nella zona, favorendo così lo sviluppo di Almagro. Il centro storicoCome in quasi tutte le località della Castiglia, il centro della città è costituito dalla Piazza Mayor. Si tratta di una costruzione di pianta rettangolare, circondata da portici di pietra, con balconi di legno su due livelli. Qui troviamo i monumenti più emblematici di Almagro, come il Corral de Comedias, il Museo Nazionale del Teatro e il Municipio.Il Corral de Comedias, dichiarato Monumento Nazionale, risale al secolo XVI ed è il luogo tipico dove venivano rappresentate le opere teatrali durante il Secolo d’Oro spagnolo. È possibile visitarne le gallerie, lo scenario e i camerini; ospita inoltre tutti gli anni il Festival Internazionale del Teatro Classico. L’Ospedale di San Juan, il Teatro Municipale, il Patio dei Fúcares, e il Chiostro dei Dominicos, insieme agli scenari all'aperto, riportano Almagro per quasi un mese all’epoca di Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina e Calderón de la Barca.Il Museo Nazionale del Teatro è ospitato in una tipica dimora locale, e dispone di interessanti fondi dedicati alle scenografie, ai costumi teatrali del secolo XVIII, ai modellini di teatro e ai teatrini, oltre a un completo archivio pittorico e musicale. Nel Municipio si conserva invece una lapide romana, proveniente da Granátula de Calatrava.Il percorso nel Quartiere Nobile ci trasporterà all’epoca di massimo splendore. Qui si possono ammirare le dimore blasonate del Mayorazgo dei Molina, dei Rosales, la Casa del Priore e quella del Cappellano delle Bernardas. Alcuni esempi dell’architettura nobiliare de La Mancia: i palazzi del Maestral, dei Marchesi di Torremejía e il Palazzo dei Conti di Valparaíso. Anche il magazzino per il grano e il mercurio dei Fúcares viene denominato palazzo, per la qualità della sua costruzione.Almagro permette inoltre di osservare importanti edifici religiosi, come le chiese di San Bartolomé (gesuita), di San Agustín (dichiarata di Interesse Culturale), e della Madre de Dios. La Plaza Mayor de Almagro se viste de gala para recibir a los Reyes Magos
Almagro ha vivido este viernes su noche más especial con la tradicional cabalgata de los Reyes Magos. Miles de personas han abarrotado la Plaza Mayor de la localidad encajera para poder contemplar, un año más, a sus Majestades. Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar han repartido caramelos e ilusión después de un largo viaje desde Oriente, haciendo las delicias de los más pequeños de la casa.

The village of Almagro has a handsome main square with open-air restaurants and shops selling local handicrafts. Adjoining the square is the 18th c. church of San Agustin with a richly frescoed interior. The nearby church of San Bartolome is of a similar age, completed in 1735. Considerably older is the 16th c. monastery of Santa Catalina, which is now a Parador hotel where we stayed overnight. The video ends with several still photos taken by my wife, Pam.

Cachondísimas Almagro 2017
Este sábado comenzaba el Carnaval de Almagro, y lo hacía como manda la tradición, con la llegada de las “Cachondísimas” a la Estación de Tren, donde fueron recibidos con música por una multitud de almagreños, muchos de ellos caracterizados como máscaras callejeras. Desde la estación, comenzaron el pasacalles que finalizó en una abarrotada Plaza Mayor y con la convidá a limoná. Aprovechando el buen tiempo, muchos turistas también pudieron conocer esta tradición puramente almagreña.

Almagro, en el Campo de Calatrava, en el centro mismo de la provincia de Ciudad Real, cuenta con una posición estratégica en su entorno físico y cultural. Corral de comedias de Almagro is located at Plaza Mayor in Almagro, Castile-La Mancha, Spain. The building is the best preserved example in the world of the corral de comedias of the 17th century.
Rediscovered during the renovation of the Plaza Mayor in 1953, Corral de Comedias de Almagro was inaugurated on 29 May 1954 with a play by Calderon de la Barca. The Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico (International Classical Theatre Festival), is annually celebrated at the corral.
This corral de comedias, initially under private ownership and later given to charity, was located within the precincts of an inn situated on the southern side of Plaza Mayor in the city center. The construction of the place where the theatre is now located, is in conformity with the prevalent building codes in Spain in 1584. A report from 1618 verifies it to be the last open air theater in the country.
The courtyard now encompasses an area of 300 square metres (3,200 sq ft), which can accommodate 300 people, but originally this structure occupied an area of 622 square metres (6,700 sq ft), therefore, more than double of what is preserved today. The courtyard of the theatre was rounded by a 54 feet (16 m) straight red-ochered wooden pillars.[n 4] These rest on stone bases so as to keep them dry. It was two stories high with rooms and hooks where an awning was placed to protect the spectators in daylight hours, and the candles or oil lamps during a rainy night. In the courtyard by the entrance there is now a well where the liquor store, with refreshments for the audience, might have been located.
Between the front door and the courtyard there was a paved hallway with small boulders showing the Cruz de Calatrava, a symbol used by the Order of Calatrava, the Order of Montesa, and the Dominican Order. In it there was an inn which operated regularly, with or without performances. There was also a small wooden gate which gave access to the court, and on both sides of the courtyard there were podiums or steps that were occupied by traders, soldiers, officials, and people of a higher social level. The rest of the yard, called the court of Mosqueteros, was occupied by those of lower social classes.

This elegant house features air conditioning and has 5 twin bedrooms, all with an en suite bathroom. DESCUBRE EL CORRAL DE COMEDIAS DE ALMAGRO
En la Plaza Mayor de Almagro, se encuentra uno de los principales edificios de la localidad. Se trata del Corral de Comedias, único en España. Se ha conservado tal cuál desde que en 1628 fuera construido por Leonardo de Oviedo a partir de una remodelación del antiguo Mesón del Toro.
Los Corrales de Comedias solían coincidir con los patios de mesones, posadas o casas de vecinos, en los que aprovechando sus propias características, se adaptaban para las representaciones de comedias durante el Siglo de Oro Español. En el siglo XVIII se decreta el cierre de los Corrales, transformándose algunos en teatros a la italiana, aunque la mayoría fueron poco a poco, demolidos.
