Plaza de San Francisco. Havana, Cuba
Plaza de San Francisco. Havana, Cuba (2010).
Havana Vieja was founded by the Spanish in 1519 in the natural harbor of the Bay of Havana. It became a stopping point for the treasure laden Spanish Galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. In the 17th century it was one of the main shipbuilding centers. The city was built in baroque and neoclassic style. Many buildings have fallen in ruin in the later half of the 20th century, but a number are being restored. The narrow streets of Old Havana contain many buildings, accounting for perhaps as many as one-third of the approximately 3,000 buildings found in Old Havana. It is the ancient city formed from the port, the official center and the Plaza de Armas. Old Havana was destroyed and burned by the French corsair Jacques de Sores. The pirate had taken Havana easily, plundering the city and burning much of it to the ground. After limiting the scarce defenders, De Sores left without obtaining the enormous wealth that he was hoping to find in Havana. The city remained devastated and set on fire. Since the incident, the Spanish brought soldiers and started building fortresses and walls to protect the city. Castillo de la Real Fuerza was the first fortress built; initiated in 1558, the construction was overseen by the engineer Bartolomé Sanchez. Old Havana resembles Cadiz and Tenerife. Alejo Carpentier called it de las columnas(of the columns), but it could also be named for the gateways, the revoco, the deterioration and the rescue, the intimacy, the shade, the cool, the courtyards... In her there are all the big ancient monuments, the forts, the convents and churches, the palaces, the alleys, the arcade, the human density. The Cuban State has undertaken enormous efforts to preserve and to restore Old Havana through the efforts of the Office of the Historian of the City, directed by Eusebio Leal.

Around the Plaza de San Francisco in Havana used to live rich merchants
Plaza de San Francisco is located on the harbor and was formerly a long time the center of domestic trade and transhipment. Here you will also find the Trade Fair that was renovated in 1996 and two storey increased. Around the square formerly wealthy merchants lived here. Already in 1573 monks built their monastery and church and the Plaza was for centuries a major place in mission work. The church and convent were completed in 1731. The remarkably high bell tower you can climb and then you seem to have a nice view of Havana. The church is due to its good acoustics and often used as a concert space. On the port side is the terminal Sierra Maestra and the customs. Now however, there are no cargo boats anymore but cruise ships. The fountain Fuente de los Leones next to the Franciscan monastery adorns the square since 1838.

Havana's oldest square which was laid out in the early 1520s, soon after the city's foundation, and was originally known as Plaza de Iglesia after a church that once stood on the site of the present-day Palacio de los Capitanes Generales.
In the center of the square, which is lined with royal palms and hosts a daily (except Sundays) secondhand book market, is a marble statue of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the man who set Cuba on the road to independence in 1868. The statue replaced one of unpopular Spanish king Ferdinand VII in 1955.
Also of note, on the square's eastern aspect is the late 18th-century Palacio de los Condes de Santovenia, today the five-star Hotel Santa Isabel.
Cuba is a Caribbean island nation under communist rule. It has sugar-white beaches and is dotted with tobacco fields, which play a part in the production of the country's legendary cigars. The capital, Havana, is lined with pastel houses, 1950s-era cars and Spanish-colonial architecture in the 16th-century core, Old Havana. Salsa music plays in the dance clubs and cabaret shows are performed at the famed Tropicana.
