Plettenberg Bay Travel Guide - South Africa Unique Moments
Plettenberg Bay Travel Guide - South Africa Unique Moments
Plettenberg Bay, nicknamed Plet or Plett, is the primary town of the Bitou Local Municipality in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It was originally named Bahia Formosa (beautiful bay) by early Portuguese explorers and lies on South Africa's Garden Route 210 km from Port Elizabeth and about 600 km from Cape Town.
Plettenberg Bay, or ‘Plett’ as it’s more commonly known, is a resort town through and through, with mountains, white sand and crystal-blue water making it one of the country’s top local tourist spots. As a result, things can get very busy, but the town retains a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and does have excellent hostels. The scenery to the east in particular is superb, with some of the best coast and indigenous forest in South Africa.
Plettenberg Bay is typified by an extremely mild maritime temperate climate with very few rainfall or temperature extremes. It is located within the Knysna Afromontane Forest biome, containing temperate gallery forest, supported by the mild temperatures and high, even distributed rainfall.
The town is highly seasonal, with a large proportion of second homes used exclusively during peak holiday periods. Popular with domestic and foreign tourists alike, many make it a stop along the garden route to visit local attractions such as Robberg Peninsula Nature Reserve, the world's largest free-flight aviary Birds of Eden, Sea Kayaking and Whale Watching, as a base to start the coastal Otter Trail, Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary or a host of other outdoor activities on offer. Although George and Port Elizabeth Airports are both within 1 and 2.5 hours drive away and offer frequent domestic and select international flights, CemAir also restarted regular direct flights from Plettenberg Bay Aerodrome to Cape Town International Airport and Johannesburg's OR Tambo Airport in 2014, enhancing accessibility by air.

South Africa Episode 3: Robberg Nature Reserve & Emily Moon River Lodge in Plettenberg Bay
We have made it to Plettenberg Bay where we are embarking on one of our most challenging hikes yet. It was so difficult, but we weren't really prepared. Weather was quite warm and we didn't bring quite enough water. We went all the way to Sea Point and back. During certain times of the year, you will see killer whales try to catch seals by the beach.
Here we are staying at Emily Moon River Lodge and it was absolutely stunning. Such a cool, intimate and fun place. The attention to design detail is perfect. It also seems like a family run place, so it makes it even more special.

Hiking the ROBBERG Peninsula SOUTH AFRICA Plettenberg Bay
The Garden Route of South Africa is a famed touring destination with many iconic locations to explore. The ROBBERG PENINSULA is definitely one of them. This place is Awesome!!
There are three HIKING routes on the Robberg, one easy, one moderate, and one 'difficult' or challenging. All are worth checking out and depending on your fitness level, and time constraints, we think the moderate and or difficult are the way to go.
In the video we touch a bit more on the area and routes. Big shout out to the African Array Backpackers Lodge ( for hosting us. Vicky and Matthew are absolute legends and I truly hope to see you both again one day. Thanks for the great stay and healthy conversations :) !!
