Bulgaria HiLites: Plovdiv, The Roman Theatre
Plovdiv is situated in the southern part of the Plovdiv Plain on the two banks of the Maritsa River. The city has historically developed on seven syenite hills, some of which are 250 m (820.21 ft) high. Because of these seven hills, Plovdiv is often referred to in Bulgaria as The City of the Seven Hills.
Known in the West for most of its history by the Greek name Philippopolis, it was originally a Thracian settlement before becoming a major Roman city. In the Middle Ages, it retained its strategic regional importance, changing hands between the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires. It came under Ottoman rule in the 14th century. In 1878, Plovdiv was made the capital of the autonomous Ottoman region of Eastern Rumelia; in 1885, it became part of Bulgaria with the unification of that region and the Principality of Bulgaria.
The Roman theatre (Antichen teatur) is probably the best known monument from Antiquity in Bulgaria. It was built in the beginning of the 2nd century during the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan. It is situated in the natural saddle between the Dzhambaz Tepe and Taksim Tepe hills. It is divided into two parts with 14 rows each divided with a horizontal lane. The theatre could accommodate up to 7,000 people. The three-story scene is located on the southern part and is decorated with friezes, cornices and statues. The theatre was studied, conserved and restored between 1968 and 1984. Many events are still held on the scene including the Verdi festival and the International Folklore festival. The Roman Odeon was restored in 2004. It was built in the 2nd-5th centuries and is the second (and smaller) antique theatre of Philipopolis with 350 seats. It was initially built as a bulevterion - edifice of the city council - and was later reconstructed as a theatre.

☼ ALL INFO HERE ☼
Last vlog from our week in the city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria! The historical city organised the 19th ITF TaeKwon-Do World Championship 2015 and we were there between Aug 23 and Aug 31.
We take a walk in Plovdiv (cultural capital 2019?) and then watch the taekwon-do finals at the Roman theatre! It was constructed during Roman Emperor Trajan (reigned 98–117 AD) and can host between 5000 and 7000 spectators. An awesome place to hold a TKD competition :)
The finals were in team sparring, North Korea vs Ukraine (male) and North Korea vs Russia (female).

Пловдив / Plovdiv Bulgaria by Drone
Plovdiv (Bulgarian: Пловдив, pronounced [ˈpɫɔvdif]) is the second-largest city in Bulgaria after Sofia, with a city population of 346,893 as of 2018 and 675,000 in the greater metropolitan area. Plovdiv is the culture capital of Bulgaria. It is an important economic, transport, cultural, and educational center. There is evidence of habitation in Plovdiv dating back to the 6th millennium BCE, when the first Neolithic settlements were established. It has been considered to be one of the oldest cities in the world.
During most of its recorded history, Plovdiv was known in the West by the name Philippopolis (Greek: Φιλιππούπολη; Turkish: Filibe; Philip's Town) after Philip II of Macedon conquered the city in the 4th century BCE. The city was originally a Thracian settlement[4] and subsequently was invaded by Persians, Greeks, Celts, Romans, Goths, Huns, Bulgars, Slavs, Rus people, Crusaders, and Turks. On 4 January 1878, at the end of the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), Plovdiv was taken away from Ottoman rule by the Russian army. It remained within the borders of Bulgaria until July of the same year, when it became the capital of the autonomous Ottoman region of Eastern Rumelia. In 1885, Plovdiv and Eastern Rumelia joined Bulgaria.
Plovdiv is situated in a fertile region of south-central Bulgaria on the two banks of the Maritsa River. The city has historically developed on seven syenite hills, some of which are 250 metres (820 feet) high. Because of these hills, Plovdiv is often referred to in Bulgaria as The City of the Seven Hills.
Plovdiv is host to a huge variety of cultural events such as the International Fair Plovdiv, the international theatrical festival A stage on a crossroad, the TV festival The golden chest, and many more novel festivals, such as Night/Plovdiv in September, Kapana Fest, and Opera Open. There are many preserved ruins such as the ancient Plovdiv Roman theatre, a Roman odeon, a Roman aqueduct, the Plovdiv Roman Stadium, the archaeological complex Eirene, and others.
The oldest American educational institution outside the United States, the American College of Sofia, was founded in Plovdiv in 1860 and later moved to Sofia.
On 5 September 2014, Plovdiv was selected as the Bulgarian host of the European Capital of Culture 2019 alongside the Italian city of Matera.[5] This happened with the help of the Municipal Foundation Plovdiv 2019″, a non-government organization, which was established in 2011 by Plovdiv's City Council whose main objectives were to develop and to prepare Plovdiv's bid book for European Capital of Culture in 2019.

Walking in PLOVDIV / Bulgaria ????????- 4K 60fps (UHD)
Plovdiv (Bulgarian: Пловдив) is one of the oldest cities in Europe and the second-largest city in Bulgaria. Located in Southern Bulgaria it is one European Capital of Culture in 2019.
We start our walk in the newer part of Plovdiv at the Maritsa River in the North of the inner city. From there we head to the Nebet Tepe hill - one of the 7 hills of the city. Old Plovdiv up there ( 9:00 ) is a tourist attraction with old houses along cobble stoned streets. The archaeological area also provides a nice view over the area.
The main attraction is the Roman-era Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis which hosts concert events. The sun comes out now and we head down to the city centre which has seen renovations over the last couple of years. The shoppingstreet Otets Paisiy is built around the Ancient Stadium of Philipopolis and Dzhumaya Mosque.
There is more to see here yet some sights seem under constructions. We end the walking tour after one hour at Garden of Tsar Simeon.
