Golden Quality Ice Cream Company Plymouth, Pa.mpg
A video and still images of the old Golden Quality Ice Cream Company in Plymouth, Pa. Simon Goldstein founded the company in the early 1900's. His son Eugene later took over the family business and operated it for 61 years. At one time the Golden Quality Ice Cream Company was the largest independent ice cream manufacturer in the United States. Their brand name, Golden Quality Empress Deluxe Ice Cream was in every freezer. On those hot summer days, here in Plymouth, there was nothing like having an ice cream cone at the ice cream parlor. Golden Quality closed its doors in the early 1980's. A few years later, the ice cream parlor was re-opened under the familiar Village Ice Cream Parlor name. The ice cream parlor remained open for several years. After its closing, several different businesses operated in the old ice cream parlor.
The building history goes way back before the Ice Cream Company. In 1864, the 1st National Bank was organized at that location. Later the building became the Stegmaier Brewery Depot Plymouth Branch. Stegmaier Beer was delivered by rail and then distributed to the many local taverns in and around Plymouth.
The ice cream parlor with its 7 room apartment, along with the entire historic property are currently for sale.
Plymouth construction firm president named Entrepreneur of the Year
A Plymouth construction company is getting attention for its workplace culture and business growth in the face of adversity. Bauer Design Build weathered the recession and has come out stronger than ever. Now its company president has been named TwinWest's 2017 Entrepreneur of the Year.
I love helping people and seeing their dreams come true. I love building things, and I love sitting down with a client and working with the designers and figuring out what it is that they need, said Mike Bauer, president of Bauer Build Design.
Bauer feels grateful to be leading the 12-year-old company that's responsible for hundreds of different buildings in the metro area. Bauer Design Build projects include everything from Omni Brewing Co. in Maple Grove to an end-of-life care center in Buffalo.
Bauer has good reason to feel proud about the growth of his company. When he started the business in 2005, little did he know a major recession was just a few years away. When the downturn hit in 2008, Bauer was able to keep operations going despite operating one year in the red.
2009 was actually the only year we operated in the red as a company. I'm pretty proud to say we didn't lay anybody off, we kept everybody busy. I actually took zero salary that year, said Bauer.
Now a company of 35 people, and a business that's on track to do more than $100 million in business this year, Bauer positioned his company for growth during the recession and even started hiring. He's quick to credit the team of people who make this company work.
I think that's part of our success is that it isn't just about finding the deal. It's helping others out.
That company culture and community involvement are key reasons area business leaders recently picked Bauer for the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce's 2017 Entrepreneur of the Year award.
The culture is definitely from the top down. He exhibits it himself, but also you can see it in all of his team members, said TwinWest President Shannon Full. That whole culture of integrity, and they speak about it, but they don't just talk about it. They really do, walk the walk.
Bauer is proud of the company and its buildings, but he's most proud of the culture that's been created by doing the right thing.
Not one of my employees will ever tell you or anybody else that that's not in my job description, said Bauer. We're always there to help them, even if there's not a job in there for us. I think what goes around, comes around.

Plymouth company aims to take cheese curd to next level
If you order deep-fried cheese curds at St. Paul Saints or Minnesota Wild games, you might not realize it's a Plymouth company behind the stringy goodness.
Curdtown is winning over fans in Minnesota while also introducing cheese curds to audiences across the country. And the goal is simple at the Plymouth headquarters.
We're trying to elevate the curd to another level here, said Pete Moroz, a Curdtown curdsman, also known as national accounts manager.
Sure, the Midwest knows all about the deep-fried goodness of cheese curds, but this small company is out to spread the word about the curd throughout the country.
We've really found a great niche in some of the areas that snowbirds go because people want their curds even in the winter, said Monica Rask, director of operations at Curdtown.
Curdtown was started just five years ago by a Minnesota restaurant owner who grew up in Wisconsin and believed people shouldn't have to wait for the Minnesota State Fair each year to get a good cheese curd.
It's two-thirds cheese, all natural white cheddar, and then it's covered in a really crispy, light panko breading, said Rask about the Curdtown curds.
Cheese from the Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery in Wisconsin is a key ingredient. Curdtown offers plain curds or a Cajun seasoned version.
If you look at some of our competitors, they will season the curd after the breading process whereas we will actually season the naked curd first, said Moroz.
Curdtown has momentum on their side. This year, their curds were sold at Los Angeles Dodgers games as well as at hometown venues such as Minnesota Wild and St. Paul Saints games. And local restaurants, such as Broadway Pizza and the Sample Room are finding creative ways to serve the irresistible Midwest staple.
As Curdtown strives to become a national name, this Plymouth business is traveling the country with an offer few can refuse.
Sampling out a cheese curd is a pretty easy thing to do, said Rask.
Curdtown is on track to sell 250,000 pounds of cheese curds this year with a goal of hitting one million pounds by 2018.

OMNI Brewing opens Sunday in Maple Grove
Craft beer is one of the fastest growing industries in the food and beverage world. It's also very popular in Minnesota.
In January, there were 74 craft breweries across the state. Today there are at least 90. Now, you can add one more to the list as OMNI Brewing Co. will open Sunday in Maple Grove.
OMNI has a taproom and will start out selling ale beers. Customers will also be able to get growlers on Sunday.
We're exciting to be opening in Maple Grove, said head brewer and co-founder Zach Ward. Now people in the northwest metro won't have to travel to northeast Minneapolis for craft beer.
Craft beer has been a big boost to the economy. Last year the craft beer industry had a $1.3 billion impact in Minnesota.
I think for a while people kind of thought the idea of beer being an industry or business was cute, and now seeing the numbers, seeing the data, people are starting to recognize craft beer is a very real industry, said Growler Magazine editor-in-chief Joseph Alton.
Alton also says he wouldn't be surprised to see more brew pubs popping up.

Oostburg AugustFest Friday August 11, 2017
On the second Friday of August on odd-numbered years, Oostburg's AugustFest celebrates community & family at Veteran's Park. Friday August 11th, 2017.
This free, family-friendly event offers top-notch live music by the WAMI-award winning band Cold Sweat and the Brew City Horns (2017 Best Horn/Big Band Artist), vendor booths galore, KidZone children's area, and food vendors + food trucks. Featuring craft beer from 3 Sheeps Brewing (Sheboygan, WI) & Ale Asylum (Madison, WI) and wine & mead from SoLu Estate Winery & Meadery (Cascade, WI).
AugustFest culminates with one of the area's most spectacular fireworks displays @ 9:30pm presented by Prevea Health, the Village of Oostburg, and Bertram Wireless.
LIVE remote radio broadcast from the event on Sheboygan's Hit Music The Point 104.5 and 96.1 FM. Listen for us all week prior to the event!
Raffle tickets are available for pre-sale August 7-11 at Oostburg State Bank, Minit Mart, Vinyl Graphics, and at AugustFest...earn a chance at winning thousands of dollars worth of prizes! All raffle and beverage proceeds support your Oostburg area Chamber of Commerce! Need not be present to win.
The first Heritage Day event was held in Oostburg in 1976 to celebrate America's Bi-Centennial. Every other year the residents of Oostburg, and eventually the Chamber of Commerce, continued the tradition as a downtown community celebration along Center Avenue.
Carrying the torch, 2017 marks the inaugural AugustFest at Veteran's Park. The park offers outstanding amenities for events & festivals - a band shell to host live music, concessions stand, playground, sports facilities, and a spacious open setting.
Veteran's Park, thanks to the Oostburg Civic Pride effort to improve the quality of life in the village, has seen many recent additions and upgrades. The Chamber of Commerce is proud to host our first AugustFest there.
Oostburg AugustFest is produced by the Oostburg Area Chamber of Commerce and a team of volunteers from Oostburg's business community. Special thanks to all sponsors and the Village of Oostburg for making this event possible!

Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin | 2018
We make some pretty cool things in Wisconsin: motorcycles in Milwaukee, military vehicles in Oshkosh, lawn mowers in Horicon, furniture in Arcadia and real, natural cheese in Plymouth, among so many others. Last year, Wisconsinites cast nearly 200,000 votes in the Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin contest, run by Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC). About 150 products were nominated by companies, workers and everyone in between in 2017, and there is no doubt that even more products will be submitted this year.
