Historic Preservation in Plymouth, Michigan: How NOT to do it...
This is a video of my perspective and thoughts of an August 7, 2019 Historic District Commission meeting I attended at Plymouth City Hall. The Commission voted YES, and NO, on allowing a developer to demolish historic homes within a historic district.
I saw an ill-informed Commission - ill informed as to what their jobs and roles as Commissioners are. The Commission was wishy washy; even though admitting during the meeting what their commission function is, the Commission voted opposite of both what the charter requires of HD Commissioners, and opposite of what the Commissioners publicly agreed as per the charter states their roles as Commissioners are.
A truly kangaroo commission. A comedy and tragedy all rolled into one, which a weak HDC commission further weakened the HDC and any credibility they have as an HDC in Michigan.
IMO every Historic District Commission in the state should be concerned about this idea - and that is - every time a weak Michigan HDC further weakens it's own individual mandate/authority - such has ripple effects across the entire state with every one of our 78 Historic Districts.
Plymouth Mi History, City Planning, Parking, Kellogg Park PART 1 of 3; Michigan historic items shown
City Planning catastrophes in historic cities are often self-inflicted by city planners whom choose to not do research, and instead allow developers to set local public policy.
Plymouth Mi could be used as a textbook example of how not to plan for sustainable growth while preserving open space, historic sites and Historic districts.

Old Village, Plymouth Michigan; will more liquor licenses threaten historic homes?
This is the Plymouth City Commission meeting of Feb 5, 2018. Unanimous vote to reccomend approval to the MLCC for another bar in Plymouth. This time, a transfer of an existing Liquor License into Historic Old Village. At former location of the Historic Bills Market and Fish Market. Now it goes to MLCC for public comment.
From the vid: We are not projecting a significant amount of sales attributable to the liquor….we don't believe it's going to affect the quality of the residents around the surrounding area, it's not going to affect the values of the homes, the intention is to, sort of enhance the area…the intent of why an additional liquor license was added is to create a more vibrant area in Old Village, and to take advantage of the kind of trending business that’s continuing to sort of be established in the location….I think unfortunately the comments by the young lady that just spoke don't apply to us.
Steve George, Plymouth Attorney, Feb 5 2018, City Commission meeting
It was interesting that the attorney made three statements, that *IN MY OPINION*, were pure conjecture, and un-knowable. In my opinion, it was rude for attorney to state that the concerns of a person who is neighbor to the business, do not apply.
The Plymouth resident who spoke, *IN MY OPINION*, did an excellent job at researching, and her presentation was far better prepared than the attorneys presentation, which seemed to be *IN MY OPINION*, a spur of the moment, clumsy and panicked attempt lacking of substantive value.
Lastly, it was quite interesting that there is an attorney in City of Plymouth, that is making a statement on the quality of residents, in Old Village. Which any Plymouth resident can clearly hear him state, on the public record.

Pere Marquette Railroad, Plymouth, Michigan
Electro-Motive E-8 ABA Diesel Locomotive, heading up the Pere Marquette Streamlined Passenger Train. This 7-train set was donated to the Plymouth (Michigan) Historical Museum by the Lawrence Scripps Wilkinson Foundation of St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Museum volunteers Dave Reitzel and Bob Pizzio hand-crafted the terrain for the Pere Marquette train to traverse from a cityscape to mountains. The trainscape sits high above the Museum's replica Pere Marquette Train Station on the 1900s-era Main Street. The Museum is indebted to the Foundation and to Reitzel and Pizzio for providing this entrancing entertainment for visitors. For more information about the Foundation, visit

Plymouth, Michigan History: Demolition of Historic Kellogg (Park) House Part 2
Here is a Video my nephew Brandon Sabo shot on the morning of October 14, 2016, of the demolition of the Historic Kellogg Home on Ann Arbor Trail, in Historic Plymouth Michigan, where it is easier to get a permit to demolish a historic home, than it is to get a permit to build a new front porch.
This (over) 150 year old home, which was in great shape and up to code, was purchased by a local developer for over a half million dollars, so that he could demolish it, and build a new home on the lot. The home was historically significant to the City and the State - the original owner being the namesake of Kellogg Park in downtown Plymouth.
The policy of Plymouth City Hall, is to encourage these demolitions of Historic Plymouth, and encourage developers to replace historically significant historic homes with bigfoot McMansions.
As a matter of fact, the City of Plymouth does have a historic district, unfortunately, the Kellogg home was not in that district. However, even historic homes within that historic district, have been demolished. Eight of them. The city and the DDA even purchased a property within the Historic district, and at the time of this upload, is working feverishly to have the site demolished for a parking garage. The particular site they would like to demolish, is a site that once housed escaped slaves on the Underground railroad.
