The Doll House in Outskirts of Plymouth | Amazing Small House Design
Like many historic houses that have seemingly managed to survive the decades unscathed, The Doll House actually had to suffer many years of abuse and neglect before being restored back to its original condition. The small farmhouse was built in 1920 on what was then still the outskirts of Plymouth, New Hampshire, a picturesque university town on the eastern side of the state’s White Mountains.
Years later, the house was turned into college-student housing, a fate usually reserved for houses so rundown that no one else would pay to live there. That may have been the case here, or it may be that everybody thought it was too tiny. Either way, the years spent as student housing didn’t help and the house fell into a terrible state of disrepair.
Fortunately two local residents were able to see the home’s sturdy bones and its potential. They began a painstaking nine-year restoration, doing all the work themselves other than new wiring and a new heating system. The original elements that were retained and restored include the century-old hardwood floors, all the exterior and interior doors, the staircase, its railing and other woodwork throughout the house.
The house is roughly 650 ft2 (60 m2) with two bedrooms tucked upstairs. It also has a generous amount of outdoor living space with a full-length front porch, a smaller screened porch at the back, and landscaped outdoor rooms.
The Doll House is now available for vacation rentals. Visitors to central New Hampshire can book a stay through Airbnb.
Enjoy your weekend!

3 Things you may not know about Plymouth
When Plymouth was first incorporated in 1858, it didn't take long for the early settlers to realize they didn't exactly like the name Plymouth.
We don't know why, said Gary Schiebe of the Plymouth Historical Society. Maybe it's just because somebody else had named it, they wanted to name it.
The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners are the ones who decided to name the settlement Plymouth, but in a document provided to 12 News from the Plymouth Historical Society, dated June 1, 1858 -- when Plymouth was just weeks old — town officials voted for the name Medicine Lake.
And so one year went by, and next April they had another annual meeting, Schiebe said. And it was called to order in the name of Medicine Lake.
Fast forward to April of 1860, and the town was once again called Plymouth.
Historians can only speculate as to why.
We think it's because when they went to the County Board saying 'here's the name we want' they said 'uh uh' we named it, Schiebe said. And there could've been legal ramifications to that because there might've been reference to that in property records and so forth.
However, that's not the last we'd hear of that name Medicine Lake. About 90 years later, a small segment of Plymouth decided to branch off and start up its own town.
Since 1944, the small city of Medicine Lake has existed on its own.
They felt they weren't getting the attention that they needed for the roads, so they thought that if they broke off and became their own community that they would be able to maintain those roads to the level that they thought was appropriate, said Plymouth Mayor Kelli Slavik.
Historians say that many of the homes along Medicine Lake once belonged to Minneapolis residents who wanted a place to escape from city life.
I'm sure the farmers had a feeling that, 'gee, you know, we've got miles and miles of gravel road and here we've got a small number of people on the peninsula complaining about their road, those city slickers, let them pay for their own road kind of a thing' Schiebe said.
Yet today, Mayor Slavik says the two cities work well together.
We work with them, we collaborate with them, we look for ways to improve water quality and to improve recreation on the lake, Slavik said. So it's a great relationship and there's certainly no hard feelings dating back to 1944.
Meantime, America was a much different place back in 1858, and at the old Plymouth Town Hall, the Plymouth Historical Society pays homage to that era with one special item.
Every year that a new state was admitted into the union, the federal government would issue a new flag on the 4th of July. Inside the old town hall along Fernbrook Lane, you'll find a replica of the 32--star flag from 1858 when Minnesota became a state -- the only year the flag was valid.
The following year, Oregon was admitted to the union, Schiebe said. So that's a trivia question you could use with your friends or relatives at Thanksgiving time let's say.
It's also a special year in Plymouth. Music in Plymouth celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The event at the Hilde Performance Center attracts thousands to the city. It takes place Tuesday at 5 p.m. and wraps up at 10 p.m. with fireworks.

Plymouth college student on hunt for massive trees
Big trees are all around us, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is looking for a few big-tree hunters in an effort to expand its registry of the state's largest trees.
College sophomore Riley Smith of Plymouth is an urban forestry major who is always on the lookout for the next big tree.
I love getting out in the woods for any reason, said Smith. I bring my measuring stuff with me wherever I go.
The DNR recently relaunched its Big Tree Registry program. The registry, which started in the 1960s, is designed to get people outdoors and document the state's largest trees.
Many trees were cut down in the 1800s, early 1900s for logging, said Jennifer Teegarden, DNR forestry outreach specialist. Most trees will outlive us, so it's fun to go find something that's older than you.
Smith recently nominated a Sugar Maple tree for the registry that Smith found off a trail near Rice Lake in Maple Grove.
I like the story behind the trees, just as much as I like the trees themselves, said Smith. I enjoy finding the biggest and the oldest and the tallest.
Teegarden is one of the DNR staff members, along with other foresters, who goes out to verify a nominated tree's measurements. Teegarden recently measured Smith's nomination of the Sugar Maple, calculating and combining the measurements of the tree's circumference, height, and crown.
In my mind, this tree is very gnarly looking, but it's very beautiful because it has character, said Teegarden at the
Maple Grove site. These older, bigger trees definitely have character versus some of the younger ones.
In the end, Smith's nomination came up a little short of the current registry champion, but its measurements were good enough to make the registry's contender list.
In case the current champion dies or falls over, which happens, said Teegarden.
If you're interested in learning how to hunt for big trees, the DNR has instructions on its website. Tools for the hunt can be as basic as a ruler and a tape measure or string.

Star Wars fun fills Golden Valley school, Plymouth theater
The force is strong with the local Star Wars faithful. Whether it is adults in the workplace or students in the classroom, people were talking Friday about the latest installment in the Star Wars franchise, The Last Jedi.
Showing off the Force at SEA
Students and parents dressed up in Star Wars attire Friday at the School of Engineering and Arts in Golden Valley. The fit is perfect for the school's focus on science.
It is so much fun to promote science and technology and Star Wars has done that for a lot of people said one family member dressed like a stormtrooper. I'm glad we are able to bring that here, where it is taught.
Fun at a Plymouth movie theater
Jedi, rebels and even a few droids came out for an advanced screening of The Last Jedi Thursday night at the family-owned Mann Plymouth Grand 15 movie theater.
We are very happy as theater owners when Star Wars comes out, says Michelle Mann, with Mann Theatres. No film comes close to Star Wars because of the cult following. It's its own island. It’s literally its own entity.
Star Wars attracts not only the casual moviegoer seeking entertainment during the holidays, but the hard-core fans who will attend several screenings of the movie.
I’ll be seeing it tonight and Saturday for sure, says Kris Heding, who expects to go see the movies three times.
Heding is also a member of the Minnesota Force, a group that dresses up in character to attend movies and events. It has heroes, villains and is just a classic story that everyone loves. That’s what draws everyone in, it’s a great story.
Disney reported Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi made $45 million from the Thursday preview showings, the second biggest preview total in North American box office history, behind only Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

Plymouth celebrates completion of Vicksburg Lane bridge
It was a blue ribbon day in Plymouth. Ribbon cutting for the Vicksburg Lane bridge took place as local and state VIPs showed up to for the milestone moment.
This is a huge deal, said Plymouth City Council member Judy Johnson.
Updating the road to two lanes was necessary to accommodate the continued growth in the area, said Plymouth Mayor Kelli Slavik. It was crucial to address the safety hazards that were presented by the railroad crossing.
The $4.7 million bridge was 10 years in the making, and required bridge building between Democrats and Republicans, who passed a bonding bill for the project.
As part of the development of northwest Plymouth, Johnson said, this is a critical corridor that is going to connect north to south.
It's going to allow traffic to move much better with a wider highway and no rail crossing, said Plymouth City Manager Dave Callister.
Before the bridge was built, crossing the railroad tracks was time-consuming and sometimes dangerous.
It was accidents waiting to happen with regards to getting over the tracks, Callister said.
It's that last big piece that will help with traffic safety, pedestrian safety and just the overall a flow in our community, Johnson said.
Canadian Pacific Railway also supported the bridge and chipped in $250,000 for the project.
We were very pleased about that, Johnson said.
Weather permitting the bridge is supposed to officially open Oct. 25. Besides handling cars, the bridge will be accessible to pedestrians and bicyclists.

Final Highway 610 segment opens
The 610 freeway will be a link from I–94 to I-35W. Some are calling the freeway the North Crosstown.
The finished stretch has already fostered job growth in Brooklyn Park. Maple Grove could soon see a business boom too.
It's going to open up business opportunities along Highway 610, especially at the intersection of Highway 94 and Highway 610, said Carie Fuhrman, Maple Grove's economic development manager. Transportation, especially access to a main highway corridor like I–94, is huge to a business when making location and site location decisions.
Friday was definitely a day of jubilation for MnDOT as the final three-mile stage of the 610 freeway was christened.
This is, I can safely state, the newest piece of pavement in the entire state of Minnesota, said a beaming Kent Barnard of MnDOT. We're very pleased. It was a long project. It's great to be out here and watch it open up.
The 610 highway was built in five chunks. The final piece to the puzzle should reduce traffic and make it easier for residents in the northwest suburbs to travel north and west.
People that live in this area, myself included, have used County Road 81 as kind a shortcut to get from 35W over to 94 and we've gone down 81 all the way to Rogers, Barnard said. Now we're going to have Highway 610 going the entire way to 94.
The distance from I-35W to I-94 on 610 is 16 miles. In non-rush hour conditions the commute takes approximately 15 minutes.
