Historically, Cham is an ancient civilization that was really influential in Southeast Asia, especially in Vietnam and Cambodia. The Cham ruled Vietnam for 10 centuries, their unmistakable architecture and art style had spread widely across places in the country. They are said to have their root in the India’s Buddhism. Thus, there are a great deal of similarity between Angkor Wat and the Po Nagar Towers found in Nha Trang.

HISTORY | THE LOST KINGDOM OF CHAMPA | PONAGAR TEMPLE | NHA TRANG
Ponagar temple
Ponagar Relic Temple (Nha Trang city- Khanh Hoa) is one of the architectural complexes of Champa culture with the largest scale in the central of Vietnam.
Ponagar temple was built around XII-XIII century, period Hindus (Hinduism) was prosperous in ancient Cham kingdom. Experiencing the rise and fall of history, people living along the bank of Cai river (Khanh Hoa) handed down the legend of the goddess Ana Ponagar. In the end of 2012, Ponagar temple was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.
The architecture of Ponagar consists of three floors, from the bottom up. On the lower floor, the ground level is the gate tower that is no longer at present. From there the stone stairs lead up to the middle floor. On the middle floor is known as Mandapa (ie guest house, undisturbed house) for pilgrims to rest, preparation of offerings. The Mandapa is 20m long, 15m wide, consisting of 4 octagonal columns (10 large columns and 12 small columns). On the trunk of the large columns have holes, deep into the column, symmetrically equal to the top of the small columns.
The top floor is a place where the towers are located. The towers are built in the style of Cham, bricks are very tight, not see adhesives. The main tower in the front row which is quite large and about 23 meters high is Ponagar tower. The tower has four floors, each floors have doors, statues and stone animals. Inside is a statue of goddess (2,6 m high) carved with black granite (previously is incense, and further is gold) on the majestic stone with the shape of lotus, the back leans on large leaf shape of Bodhi. This is a masterpiece on Champa sculpture, a harmonious combination of circular and sculpture techniques. At the top of the tower there is a statue of Shiva on Nandin, and statues of swan, goat and elephant.
Every year, the Ponagar temple festival was held from 20th to 23th March of the lunar calendar. The Cham and Kinh people everywhere carry their offerings, pilgrimages to Ponagar temple in Nha Trang to express their sincere gratitude to a woman who had taught them how to work and live by agriculture.
Visiting Ponagar temple in Nha Trang, besides learning about history, architecture, spiritual, visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy the Cham dance performed by the Cham music group

Po Nagar built between the 7th and 12th centuries, these impressive Cham towers are still actively used for worship by Cham, Chinese and Vietnamese Buddhists. Originally the complex had seven or eight towers, but only four remain, of which the 28m-high North Tower (Thap Chinh; AD 817), with a terraced pyramidal roof, vaulted interior masonry and vestibule, is the most magnificent.
The towers stand on a granite knoll 2km north of central Nha Trang, on the banks of the Cai River.

Po Nagar is a Cham temple tower founded sometime before 781 and located in the medieval principality of Kauthara, near modern Nha Trang in Vietnam. It is dedicated to Yan Po Nagar, the goddess of the country, who came to be identified with the Hindu goddesses Bhagavati and Mahishasuramardini, and who in Vietnamese is called Thiên Y Thánh Mâu.

The Po Nagar complex is situated on Cù Lao Mountain. It consists of three levels, the highest of which encompasses two rows of towers. The main tower is about 25 m high.
Durga, the slayer of the buffalo-demon, is represented on the pediment above the entrance to the temple.
The temple's central image is a 1.2m tall stone statue of the goddess Yan Po Nagar sitting cross-legged, dressed only in a skirt, with ten hands holding various symbolic items. According to Vietnamese scholar Ngô Vǎn Doanh, these attributes show that Yan Po Nagar was identified also with the Hindu goddess Mahishasuramardini or Durga, the slayer of the buffalo-demon. Another sculpture of the goddess as Mahishasuramardini may be found in the pediment above the entrance to the temple: it depicts the four-armed goddess holding a hatchet, a lotus and a club, and standing on a buffalo. This sculpture belongs to the Tra Kieu style of Cham art from the end of the 10th century or the beginning of the 11th century.

Ponagar's Cham Towers - Nha Trang - Vietnam
Built between the 7th and 12th centuries, these four Cham Towers are still actively used for worship by Cham, Chinese and Vietnamese Buddhists. Originally the complex had seven or eight towers, but only four towers remain, of which the 28m-high North Tower (Thap Chinh), which dates from AD 817, with its terraced pyramidal roof, vaulted interior masonry and vestibule, is the most magnificent.
The towers stand on a granite knoll 2km north of central Nha Trang, on the banks of the Cai River.
It's thought this site was first used for worship as early as the 2nd century AD. The original wooden structure was razed to the ground by attacking Javanese in AD 774, but was replaced by a stone-and-brick temple (the first of its kind) in 784.
The towers serve as the Holy See, honouring Yang Ino Po Nagar, the goddess of the Dua (Liu) clan, which ruled over the southern part of the Cham kingdom. There are inscribed stone slabs scattered throughout the complex, most of which relate to history or religion and provide insight into the spiritual life and social structure of the Cham.
All of the temples face east, as did the original entrance to the complex, which is to the right as you ascend the hillock. In centuries past, worshippers passed through the pillared meditation hall, 10 pillars of which can still be seen, before proceeding up the steep staircase to the towers.
In 918, King Indravarman III placed a gold mukha-linga (carved phallus with a human face painted on it) in the North Tower, but it was taken by Khmer raiders. This pattern of statues being destroyed or stolen and then replaced continued until 965, when King Jaya Indravarman IV replaced the gold mukha-linga with the stone figure, Uma (shakti, or female consort of Shiva), which remains to this day.
Above the entrance to the North Tower, two musicians, one of whose feet is on the head of the bull Nandin, flank a dancing four-armed Shiva. The sandstone doorposts are covered with inscriptions, as are parts of the walls of the vestibule. A gong and a drum stand under the pyramid-shaped ceiling of the antechamber. In the 28m-high pyramidal main chamber, there is a black-stone statue of the goddess Uma with 10 arms, two of which are hidden under her vest; she is seated and leaning back against a monstrous beast.
The Central Tower (Thap Nam) was built partly of recycled bricks in the 12th century on the site of a structure dating from the 7th century. It is less finely constructed than the other towers and has little ornamentation; the pyramidal roof lacks terracing or pilasters, although the interior altars were once covered with silver. There is a linga inside the main chamber.
The South Tower (Mieu Dong Nam), at one time dedicated to Sandhaka (Shiva), still shelters a linga, while the richly ornamented Northwest Tower (Thap Tay Bac) was originally dedicated to Ganesh. To the rear of the complex is a less impressive museum with a few examples of Cham stonework.
To get here from central Nha Trang, take Ð Quang Trung (which becomes Ð 2 Thang 4) north across the Ha Ra and Xom Bong Bridges. Po Nagar can also be reached via the Tran Phu Bridge along the beachfront road.
======================================================
