Phowintaung , also spelt as Hpowindaung, Powintaung, Po Win Taung) is a Buddhist cave complex located approximately 25 kilometers west of Monywa and 10 kilometers southeast of Yinmabin, in Yinmabin Township, Monywa District, Sagaing Region, Northern Burma (Myanmar). It is located on the western bank of the Chindwin River. The name of the complex means Mountain of Isolated Solitary Meditation
The hill, a soft volcanic rock, It's a huge, multi-level Buddhist religious complex with about 800 rock-cut caves, which vary from a simple meditation cell to an imposing temple. The facades are decorated in low and high reliefs, with some entrances flanked by human or animal sculptures in the round. The interiors of the grottoes contain numerous statues carved into the rock and over 100 caves are adorned with mural paintings illustrating traditional scenes (the 28 Buddha of the Past, previous lives of Buddha, and the Life of Buddha Gotama) including scenes of daily life. For the most part, the creations of Po Win Taung date from the second Ava period (16th - 18th centuries), and to a lesser extent, to the colonial period (last quarter of 19th till mid 20th centuries).
This work defines the characteristics of the « Nyaung Yan » style, generally designated as the « Ava » style, a period which is little known to the oriental art world. The artistic treasures of Po Win Taung allow us to explore and comprehend this style to a much greater extent. They show a profound syncretism harmonizing local pre-buddhist beliefs and the fundamental teachings of Theravâda Buddhism as well as the different sources of inspiration

Monywa, Myanmar
Video with images of the Hpo Win Daung Caves at Monywa a town in northern Myanmar on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River. It is the second largest town in northern Myanmar and serves as a major trade center for agricultural produce. Goods coming from India pass through Monywa on their way to other parts of Myanmar. Across the Chindwin River is a system of sandstone caves situated in a cleft in the Hpo Win Daung hills. The caves and the surrounding hills are named after U Hpo Win Daung, a famous alchemist who once lived among them.
The Hpo Win Daung Caves contain Buddhist statues, wood carvings and murals dating to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Some of them may date as far back as the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. There are dozens of large and small caves in the area filled with old Buddhas. It is said that there are over four hundred thousand images in these and other nearby caves. In the Win Kaba cave several statues of a seated Buddha are placed in a row right at the entrances of the cave. The cave is guarded by chinthes or mythical griffins carved from the stone of the rock. In the Myint Mo cave decorative mural paintings are still visible behind the Buddha statues.

20 Monywa Caves, Myanmar (Burma)
We Said Go Travel We were lucky during two weeks of our travels in Myanmar to travel with our friends, Anke and Moritz, from Germany.
Anke read about Monywa with the 452 Buddhas carved into caves and we decided to go on the way to Bagan from Mandalay.
To get to Hpo Win Daung Caves: first take a tuk tuk to the jetty (2000K), second charter a private boat across (there is no bridge) locals pay 200K each, foreigners must charter their own boat for 2500K for the exact same boat, to go to the exact same place. We saw people take their motorbikes and bicycles on the boats. It was very easy and in about twenty minutes we were on the other side.
It was good to be a group of four as the price is the same no matter the size of the group for the tuk tuk, boat and the transport to the cave which is 15,000K and about 45 minutes. Our driver stopped twice to show us the Copper Mines owned by the Chinese. He claimed that The people of Myanmar are not happy, about the mines being owned by the Chinese. We saw local people sitting in front of their wooden huts with children and oxen in their yards. The road was surprisingly good with very few potholes.
The caves are named after U Hpo Win a famous alchemist who once lived there. There are murals in many of the caves and some date to the 14th to the 16th century. Most of the over 200,000 large and small caves exhibit the Inwa (Awa) style from the 17th and 18th century, says the Monywa hotel brochure.
In the afternoon we went to the Standing Buddha at Boddhi-Tataung and to
Thanboddhay Pagoda to see the 500,000 Budhhas—see the other movies about Monywa.
