LEAD IN:
More than three thousand Russian fans of Japanese anime gathered in St. Petersburg for the annual anime festival.
The 'Tosho-Con' convention is the largest event of its kind in Russia.
STORYLINE:
In Russia they call them 'Otaku' - the term describing people obsessed with the Japanese craze of anime.
Anime is another word for animation - and that's what fans do - recreate scenes from old Japanese comic books and cartoons.
Anime is spreading fast in Russia, not only in big cities like Moscow and St.Petersburg, but in much smaller provincial towns, which were also represented at the festival.
The anime world is played out via costumes, music and performances. Many of the participants make their own costumes. Some write their own music.
For others anime is an outlet from day-to-day life - a form of escapism and self expression. For others, it's just a bit of fun.
This is my type of rest, let's say it's my hobby, says student Edic Aibasov. I like it, it's sort of going back to childhood. I like sewing my costumes, making swords and so on, and then to perform on the scene and get pictures of it. It is something to remember.
I think people want this way to distract themselves from their regular life, to get their dreams come true and to be incarnated in somebody else, says Alexander Kalinin.
The event also featured karaoke, a martial arts demonstration and video game tournaments.

STORYLINE
It has long been said that a dog is a man's best friend, but at a centre in the Podolsk region of Moscow this relationship has been taken to new levels.
The 'Ordintsi Fund' for disabled children has set up a programme using dog training as a form of therapy for mentally handicapped and physically disabled children.
The Ordintsi Fund was set up in 2001 by a group of Russian scientists in order to find an alternative method of treatment for mentally impaired children.
Traditional methods for treating disabled children revolve around increasing physical activity and physical therapy.
There are other examples of doctors using animals as a form of therapy, but this is the first centre in the world that has attempted to harness the natural characteristics of dogs.
Yuri Karepin, President of the Ordintsi Fund said working with the dogs improved a child's self confidence as well as coordination.
The children go to the centre once or twice a week.
Their age range is between seven to sixteen and all study at School Number Twenty, which specifically caters for disabled children.
The centre uses many different kinds of dogs, from Alsatians to Central Asian Sheepdogs, all of which are kept on site.
The exercises range from walking the dog on a lead to obedience exercises and even dog agility tests.
There has long been a certain stigma attached to mental illness and disability in Russia.
One of the main aims of the Ordintsi Centre is to combat this by increasing awareness and understanding of disabled children.
This is achieved primarily though taking the children and dogs to shows and exhibitions to parade their achievements.
There are no easy answers to mental illness.
Working with dogs will not completely cure the children, but the benefit in terms of their own enjoyment is plain to see.
The mother of one disabled child, Olga Nikolaevna Yurgov said, they huge smiles on their faces.''

STORYLINE:
Russian pensioners continued their protests on Friday against plans to cut their social benefits, the largest outburst of public anger during President Vladimir Putin's five years in power.
A law that gives the retired, the disabled, war veterans and others cash stipends instead of benefits such as free medicine and public transport took effect on January 1.
Officials said the reform affects about 40 (m) million of Russia's 144 (m) million people.
Some of the sharpest criticism has focused on the rescinding of free passes for public transport, a benefit that some officials have said is easily abused because the passes are used by many people who are not eligible for subsidies.
The authorities in many regions, including Moscow and St Petersburg, have already restored free rides on public transport for pensioners or offered them subsidised travel passes.
Joseph Glazier, an 88-year-old retired bus driver, says his rent had doubled and he expected it to increase again in a month.
I don't think (the government) gives a damn about us, said Glazier, the son of a South African who immigrated to the Soviet Union in the 1930s.

The German sauna culture – nudity and all | Meet the Germans
The Germans might not have invented the sauna tradition, but they have very much embraced it. On this week's Meet the Germans, Rachel Stewart finds out why the Germans just love to get naked for a communal sweat session.
Rachel is on a mission to investigate the quirks and idiosyncrasies of daily life in Germany. Every two weeks she explores a new topic - from beer to sauna etiquette to complicated grammar - and heads out to get some tips from the Germans themselves.
Rachel moved from the UK to Germany in 2016. As a relative newcomer she casts a fresh eye over German clichés and shares her experiences of settling into German life. You'll find more from Meet the Germans on YouTube or at dw.com/MeettheGermans.

Best ZOOS of Ukraine; Vinnitsa ZOO
There are two zoos in the city of Vinnitsa, Ukraine.
1) The first Podolsky zoo is located at the north entrance to the city on the road from Berdichev.
Podolsky Zoo is a zoological park in the city of Vinnitsa. It is the youngest zoo in Ukraine. Its first animals have been received from the Kiev, Men and Rivne zoos, and also it has an exchange with the Cherkassy Zoo.
There are 6 species of pheasants, 2 species of peacocks, 2 species of ostriches, bison, deer, moufflon and llamas in the zoo. Animals in the zoo are kept in semi-free conditions.
The favorites of the public - large cats, ostriches - in winter are transferred to a room where visits are allowed. The donkeys and a deer are fed in cages to store fat. The bears, like none of the animals of the zoo, feel the change in the weather. In unnatural conditions, they do not fall into hibernation. Therefore, in summer and winter they live in the same enclosures, but they eat more. Two small deers for the first time find out on themselves what the Ukrainian winter is. They are fed carrots and apples by the visitors of the zoo. The non cold-resistant animals were transferred to a separate isolated room. The large cats and ostriches were transferred there. Next in line is the lynx. Their winter cages should soon be prepared for visitors. However, some residents of the zoo, for example, bison, wolves and foxes, can winter in the open air.
2) The contact mini-zoo is located in the central park of Vinnitsa city.
Here you can pet small piglets, play with rabbits and guinea pigs, feed sheep, goats and llama. We really enjoyed watching the friendship of the raccoon and the nasua. There are very nice monkeys and kangaroos, as well as peacocks, mini-hens, guinea fowls, ducks in the zoo.
Thank you very much for views, comments and likes!
