Ruins of Poggioreale - Belice valley, Trapani - Sicily, Italy | Drone aerial view
I came back to Poggioreale, the ghost town, for my second time on the 3rd of June 2019 right after my visit to The Great Cretto in Gibellina.
This time unfortunately I couldn’t actually enter the town as the firemen were working to secure the ruins, which require constant maintenance; but I still got a chance to capture some footage with my drone.
Poggioreale, was once populated by about 4,000 inhabitants before being destroyed on the night between the 14th and 15th of January 1968 by the Belice heartquake.
Restoration of its ruins has been deemed uneconomical and eventually the city was rebuilt about 4km away.
The new city has been abandoned by many as recovery of the Belice valley was difficult after the earthquake and today the smaller town counts about 1,400 residents.
The ruins of Poggioreale are visited by thousands of tourists every year even when the main gate is closed since there is a path at the right of the gate that leads into the city.

Saving Poggioreale: A Sicilian Story
The Ghost Town of Poggioreale - Sicily
Poggioreale (Sicilian: Poggiuriali) is a small town and comune in Sicily, Italy, set on the Belice valley, which administratively belongs to the province of Trapani.
It was destroyed by the Belice Valley earthquake in 1968, and eventually rebuilt in a safer place a few kilometers away, causing the entire population to be moved there.

Ghost Town - Belice Earthquake - The ancient Poggioreale
It was the night between 14 and 15 January 1968, when a violent one
earthquake shook the earth in the Valle del Belice, between the provinces of
Agrigento, Trapani and Palermo. 400 dead and four population centers razed to the ground.
The most affected municipality was Poggioreale, which after the
earthquake was abandoned to its fate, becoming a real ghost town.
Wandering through the streets of the big city is like going through a decadent and evocative setting, suspended between the present and the past, Poggioreale is the unraveling testimony of what was life before 1968, with the workshops, the bakery, the barber on Piazza Elimo still well recognizable. A non-place in which the surreal silence is interrupted only by the sounds of the
nature and ruins in ruins, where it is the sense to be the master
of human precariousness.

Poggioreale, amid past, present and future
In the Valley of Belice an evocative itinerary through the heart of the Province of Trapani unwinds carrying one from prehistory to the third millennium. In the heart of the Bagnitelli fief, lying at the foot of Mount Castellazzo (formerly an Elimian center and afterwards Greek dominated) the Marquis Francesco Morso founded a town called Poggioreale in 1642.
Following the earthquake of 1968 Poggioreale's story continued elsewhere where now in a valley the new Poggioreale arises as a modern town surrounded by undisturbed nature and by relieves dominated by spectacular panoramas. The people of Poggioreale entrust their hope for a bright future in the town's favourable position right in the middle of the routes most travelled by tourists in Western Sicily and its rich agricultural resources.
Not wishing to loose its cultural moorings the new Poggioreale vigorously maintains its identity, roots and history. In the devotion for its Patron Saint Anthony of Padua the people of Poggioreale express their inner desire to disseminate their message of brotherhood and love uniting them where ever in the world they are found.
Poggioreale (Trapani - Sicily) the ghost town (Poggioreale - Trapani - il paese fantasma)
Destroyed by human neglect and greed more than the earthquake.
(Distrutto più che dal terremoto dall'incuria e dalla cupidigia dell'uomo)
It's a sad story of a ghost town in Sicily partially damaged by the earthquake in 1968. But instead of repairing and rebuilding the old town, a new horrible one has been built few km's away... someone could argue to get more money from institutions and keep more in politicians pockets. The social network has been destroyed with many inhabitants moving away. It is a sad statement of both resource waste and not making and keeping community a priority.

Inside Italy: Art in the heart of Sicily
In January 1968 a catastrophic earthquake destroyed Gibellina and some of the surrounding towns in Sicily's parched Belice Valley. When reconstruction began on New Gibellina in the 1970s, the local mayor invited prominent artists to help shape the town, turning this sleepy valley into an international centre for contemporary and performing arts.

Hundreds attend first 'Poggioreale in America' Reunion
There was a special reunion honoring Brazos Valley history on Saturday.
Italians from Poggioreale, Sicily started settling in the Brazos Valley as early as the mid-1870s.
Many of these hardworking sharecroppers settled in the community of Steele’s Store, near FM 50 and SH 21, endured numerous floods, and eventually acquired enough land of their own to make a decent living.
Today, many of these families still farm the land in Steele’s Store and many others own businesses and have become civic leaders in Bryan and College Station.
Some of the many families who are descendants of the Poggioreale, Sicilian-Italians: Angonia, Stratta, Termini, Todaro, Maniscalco, Cangelosi, Scarmardo, Fazzino, Lampo, Patranella, Perrone, Salvaggio, Salvato, Carraba, Canavese, Patranella, and many others.
Every Poggioreale here has a story of leaving a famine in Poggioreale and coming to the United States, said Ross Todaro, founder of the Poggioreale in America Association.
There was lunch, history displays, Poggioreale Vendors and local authors.
The mayor of Poggioreale, Signore Mimmo Cangelosi, and International Good Will Ambassador for Poggioreale, Sicily Cavallieri Pietro Maniscalco, were in attendance and received many gifts, most of them Texas themed.
Cangelosi received a key to the city.
They also received proclamations from both Bryan College Station Mayors and the Brazos County Judge to be honorary Texans.
