Prince Diamond arrives in downtown Papeete. Carol flies home to Toronto temporarily. Brian watches a bicycle race, hikes up to the Fautaua valley waterfall and rides the bus to Point Venus where Cook landed to observe the transit of Venus in 1769. Point Venus was also the place where Captain Bligh and his Bounty loaded their breadfruit plants shortly before the famous mutiny.

Venus Point - Papeete
Venus Point is a black sand spit jutting into Matavai Bay. It is a favoured picnic spot for locals as the water is clear and warm, and the beach usually sheltered and calm. Occasionally it will offer small long breaking waves which are great for body boarding – especially for kids. (A small tip – Air Tahiti Nui will allow one extra ‘surf’ bag per person on flights to Tahiti without fee - so it is worth packing your body boards, especially if taking kids)

French Polynesia Surf Vacation
This video is about my surf vacation in Tahiti and Moorea. It also shows Point Venus - my very first stop in Tahiti once I got off the plane :) The James Cook mission of 1769 observed the transit of Venus here. It was actually observed at several locations of the world and the data was used to measure the distance from the earth to the sun. Even though the mission was deemed a failure, the measurement turned out to be astonishingly accurate:
