On the icy Norwegian islands of Svalbard, located well above the Arctic Circle, the maximum temperature was just 13°C last year and the minimum temperature a frosty -24°C. For more than three months of the year, the sun doesn't even rise over Svalbard. And yet, one farmer and chef has taken it upon himself to try to grow food there. FRANCE 24's team went to meet him.

Polar Permaculture - Growing Food in The Arctic
This small farm deep inside the arctic circle is growing food in one of the harshest environments on earth.
[Wikipedia] Agriculture in Svalbard
Agriculture in Svalbard – the world's northernmost – has a short history, and remains a minor economic factor, but has nonetheless had a culturally and socially significant role, as well as an ecologic impact. Svalbard is also home to the Global Seed Vault, which serves to protect the world's biological and agricultural diversity. Polar Permaculture Solutions, AS was formed in January 2015. Polar Permaculture has been focused on producing locally grown food in town, and also with composting food waste.

The farm at the top of the world | Svalbard, Norway
Despite the freezing temperatures, howling winds and constant darkness of Svalbard's polar night, this remote island is home to some incredible arctic plants. As the worlds climate becomes more extreme, bioengineers are studying these plants to find out how to improve our own crops.

Environmental sustainability challenges in the Arctic – developing solutions with the help of DEB
Keynote talk by JoLynn Carroll at the 5th International Symposium on Dynamic Energy Budget theory
Rich in natural resources, the Arctic is experiencing a significant increase in sea-based activities related to maritime transport, offshore energy, tourism, coastal development, fisheries and aquaculture. This northwards expansion of industrialization is partly due to new discoveries of natural resources but also to improved access routes and newly available infrastructure in the region. In 2006, Norway became the first nation to establish an ecosystem-based management (EBM) policy approach to reconcile their nation’s maritime activities with environmental sustainability. The European Union followed in 2008 with the adoption of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Translating EBM policy into practice requires development of ecosystems monitoring methods and modeling tools to identify changes and assess impacts. The consistent application of mechanistic principles, provided by the DEB approach, is essential to achieving this aim. In this presentation, I will present, from the end-user perspective, example applications of the DEB approach for environmental sustainability in the Arctic setting.
Growing greens in the Arctic | DW Documentary
In Spitsbergen, one of the northern-most populated areas inside the Arctic Circle, American Benjamin Vidmar is attempting the unthinkable.
On an island that is dark for three months of the year, he’s growing fresh vegetables for the local community. enjamin Vidmar has worked all over the world as a chef. It was something of a coincidence that he ended up on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, in the Arctic Circle. Because he wanted to have fresh vegetables, he built a special domed-shaped greenhouse and developed his own composting system. His aim is to provide fresh, locally sourced food for the community along with a sustainable waste disposal system - developing global solutions for food production in the process. Now he wants to open his own restaurant which is to operate without producing any waste. A report by Axel Rowohlt. --------------------------------------------------------------------
