????LONGYEARBYEN, SVALBARD ISLANDS - The realm of the polar bear ❄
The Svalbard Islands are located in the Arctic Ocean, halfway between Norway and the North Pole. Here, you will find untouched arctic wilderness and unique wildlife in a setting that is both rugged and fragile at the same time.
In addition to a few thousand polar bears, the islands are home to almost 3,000 human inhabitants, over 2,000 of which live in Longyearbyen, the administrative centre and largest settlement of the islands.

4K | Arctic Svalbard and the world's northernmost town
During the time around midsummer 2016 and the long arctic day I went to Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago at the north pole. I visited Longyearbyen, which is the biggest settlement in Svalbard and the world's northernmost big town. Furthermore I also visited Ny-Ålesund, which is the absolute northernmost permanent settlement in the world. Svalbard is home to a large variety of animals that are threatened by the retreating ice cap of the north pole.

Formerly called the Spitsbergen Airship Museum, it was created by Svalbard veteran and arctic guide Stefano Poli, who’s been living and working in Longyearbyen for 20 years. Stefano is a passionate expert of polar exploration and he’s been on an exploration trip in the North of Svalbard, on the racks of the ITALIA Airship rescue expeditions on land.

Longyearbyen, Svalbard - The World's Northernmost Town!
Clips taken in August of 2019 in Longyearbyen - the World's Northernmost Town, located in Svalbard, Norway. The town is at 78o N of latitude, inside the Arctic Circle and just over 800 miles from the North Pole! As of 2019, Svalbard had about 2,600 inhabitants - most of them living in Longyearbyen, and about 3,000 polar bears! It is also home to the Global Seed Vault - also known as Doomsday Seed Vault. Enjoy!
The farm at the top of the world | Svalbard, Norway
Despite the freezing temperatures, howling winds and constant darkness of Svalbard's polar night, this remote island is home to some incredible arctic plants. As the worlds climate becomes more extreme, bioengineers are studying these plants to find out how to improve our own crops.

Come take a walk with me around Longyearbyen, the largest town on the Norwegian islands of Svalbard.
Parts of it look familiar, but make no mistake, this place is different.
At 78 degrees North, it lies just 800 miles or 1300 kilometres from the North Pole. And with over 2,000 permanent inhabitants it is the Northernmost real town on Earth.
There are only 50km of road, including the small streets between houses, so people get around the island mainly on snowmobile.
In fact there are more registered snowmobiles than residents.
Anyone leaving town is required to travel with a gun and someone who knows how to use it because the islands are also home to polar bears.
The average daytime high is below freezing for all but four months of the year, and from the end of October to mid-February the sun doesn’t rise at all. This is the long polar night.
Living here is tough. This past December an avalanche in town destroyed 10 homes, which used to be here, killing two people.
So how did this cold, remote, ice-covered archipelago come to be inhabited?
The hills around town are rich in coal deposits that have been mined for over 100 years.
The coal was transported to the port via a series of aerial tramways some of which remain today, though they are no longer operational.
Coal is a reminder that Svalbard was not always an Arctic ice world. 360 million years ago it was actually in the tropics North of the equator. A swampy area, it was covered with the precursors to modern ferns, which were much larger than they are today, reaching 10-30 metres in height.
This vegetation was then covered in mud and sand and submerged under the sea. Over time it turned into the coal deposits that in the 20th century brought miners from Norway, Russia, and the US.
Most of the coal mines have now closed and the economy is gradually shifting towards tourism, education and research.
Tourists take trips on snowmobiles and dog sleds.
There is a university centre in Svalbard, which offers semester courses in biology, physics and geology.
And up on the side of a mountain is the Svalbard Global seed vault… but that’s a story for another time.
The locals tell me that interest in the region from different nations is increasing.
As the globe warms and Arctic ice shrinks, trade routes are opening up across the North. And Svalbard is strategically placed between North America, Asia and Europe.
One day in the future Svalbard may no longer be as cold or remote as it once was.
But for now it is a reminder of how through our ingenuity people can live in the most inhospitable of places.

Arctic Nature Guide
Svalbard (Свальбард) is an archipelago in the Arctic, constituting the northernmost part of Norway. Located north of mainland Europe, it is about midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. The group of islands range from 74° to 81° north latitude (and thus inside the Arctic Circle), and from 10° to 35° east longitude. Spitsbergen is the largest island, followed by Nordaustlandet and Edgeøya. The administrative center is Longyearbyen, and other settlements, in addition to research outposts, are the Russian mining community of Barentsburg, the research community of Ny-Ålesund and the mining outpost of Sveagruva. The archipelago is administrated by the Governor of Svalbard.
The islands were first taken into use as a whaling base in the 17th and 18th centuries, after which they were abandoned. Coal mining started at the beginning of the 20th century, and several permanent communities were established. The Spitsbergen Treaty of 1920 recognizes Norwegian sovereignty, and the 1925 Svalbard Act made Svalbard a full part of the Kingdom of Norway. They also established Svalbard as a free economic zone and a demilitarized zone. The Norwegian Store Norske and the Russian Arktikugol remain the only mining companies. Research and tourism have became important supplementary industries, featuring among others the University Centre in Svalbard and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. No roads connect the settlements; instead snowmobiles, aircraft and boats serve inter-community transport. Svalbard Airport, Longyear serves as the main gateway.
The archipelago features an Arctic climate, although with significantly higher temperatures than other areas at the same latitude. The flora takes advantage of the long period of midnight sun to compensate for the polar night. Svalbard is a breeding ground for many seabirds, and also features polar bears, reindeer and marine mammals. Seven national parks and twenty-three nature reserves cover two-thirds of the archipelago, protecting the largely untouched, yet fragile, nature. Sixty percent of the archipelago is glacier, and the islands feature many mountains and fjords.

For this week's vlog, we thought it would be helpful to take you around the biggest supermarket in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Surprisingly, I found that Svalbard cost of living (at least the supermarket food prices) are not that expensive.
From produce prices, Svalbard alcohol and beer, to the bread and whale meat, Co-op Svalbard has it all. And even better, they have a locker to store your polar bear rifle if you need it!
