Old Photographs Of Pollokshields Glasgow Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Pollokshields, Scottish Gaelic: Buthan Phollaig, an area in the Southside of Glasgow. Pollokshields was established by the Stirling Maxwell family in 1849, and was set out or feued by the Edinburgh architect David Rhind. Many well known Glaswegian architects contributed to its development and, amongst others, it contains villas by Alexander Greek Thomson. There are several contributions by contemporaries of Charles Rennie Mackintosh including a series of good Glasgow style tenements by the architect H. E. Clifford. The Pollokshields Burgh Hall stands at the edge of Maxwell Park. Designed by Henry Edward Clifford and constructed in 17th century Scottish Baronial style, it was opened in 1890 by Sir John Stirling Maxwell as a Masonic Meeting Place and for the use of the community but served the independent burgh of Pollokshields only until 1891. The Hamilton Memorial Fountain in Maxwell Park was constructed by the Doulton Company in the famous Italian white marble from Carrara in Tuscany. It is a memorial to John Hamilton, who hunted in the area when the land was a marsh. The fountain was demolished in 1989.

Pollokshields Community Council is a great example of a community council representing and engaging with a diverse population. The community council organised a charrette that around 400 people from the community participated in. They also work with other local groups and have been the driving force behind Pollokshields Playhouse, an open-air space for local events, film screenings, and community art projects. Yours truly ended up perched on a ladder 6ft in the air so I could take the photographs, who said a photographers life wasn't an interesting one!

Robert Wolfe at the Pollokshaws Wurlitzer
After his roof-raising 2018 concert at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall, Glasgow (UK), Robert Wolfe was kind enough to let us see him in action up close and personal!
The Pollokshaws 3/21 Wurlitzer has lived in Pollokshaws Burgh Hall for some 10 years now, where monthly concerts are held featuring internationally acclaimed organists. Before its move to Pollokshaws, the organ (with smaller specification) was housed in Clydebank Town Hall, Glasgow after being restored and installed by the Scottish Cinema Organ Trust, who still own, present, preserve and promote the Wurlitzer today. 8 ranks of the organ and the console was originally installed in the Ritz Cinema, Stockport, England, 1937.
