Tourists learn polo from the professionals
(13 Mar 2018) LEADIN
Polo has traditionally been an exclusive, glamorous sport reserved for the rich elite.
But in Argentina, home to the world's top polo players, tourists can now get a taste of the sport for less than 200 US dollars a day.
STORYLINE
Putting on their helmets and swinging their mallets, this could be a group of budding Argentine polo players.
But most of them are simply here on holiday.
They're taking part in Argentina Polo Day, a day course at La Carona club in Buenos Aires province, about an hour's drive north of the capital.
Polo has traditionally been an exclusive sport reserved for rich elites across the world, but these tourists from Britain, Russia, Iceland and the US are learning the basics for less than 200 US dollars a day.
Stephane Buton, a polo instructor from France, is teaching them how to grip the mallet and hit the ball.
Jed Hulsey, a retired firefighter and tourist from Newport beach, California, says he's familiar with a variety of sports, but polo is a little bit different.
I play golf and I play tennis and I like to swing rackets and I think this is kind of similar in a way. Though adding a horse to the equation makes it a little more different, more fun and interesting.
Martin Folan from London says it's the first time he's been on a horse, let alone tried to ride one while swinging a mallet.
It was fantastic. It's my first time on a horse. They're quite intimidating to be honest with you, normally, for a man standing on the ground. But absolutely fabulous to be trotting around with it and then I never thought I would have done this at the beginning of the day. So, it's magnificent.
The exact origins of polo are unknown, but it is believed to be one of the oldest team sports, dating as far back as 600 BC in Persia.
It then spread throughout Asia and later reached Britain via India.
But Argentina, with its wide plains and its rich culture of horseback riding among the Argentine cowboys or Gauchos, has gone on to dominate professional polo globally.
Russian tourist Alina Gorilino says she was surprised that it's possible to get so close to the sport here.
It's very strange for me also because I myself always thought that polo, at least in Russia, is for the very privileged range of the people, just aristocrats, she says.
I thought even to come to Argentina it would be hardly possible to see the polo because you need to be like at least member of the club. So for me it's very pleasant, firstly to know that that's possible to see, and secondly it's another pleasure to know that we will also be allowed to play.
There are about 3,000 registered polo players in Argentina, with many more informal ones who play on the side.
The Argentine Polo Open Championship held annually in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires usually sells out its 14,000 seats at the stadium that is revered by many as The Cathedral of world polo.
Ruben Jabib came up with the idea for Argentina Polo Day when he owned a restaurant in Buenos Aires, just blocks from the Palermo polo grounds.
He'd often meet tourists who were frustrated because polo is only played for a brief time every year.
So he decided to use two outdoor fields and built an indoor field at his club so that tourists with no previous experience could play year-round in all weather conditions.
The price of the polo day also includes transportation, wine and a traditional Argentine barbeque.
During today's training session, Buton explains the game is played in time lessons called chukkas.
Most matches have six chukkas and last seven minutes.
He says the Argentine players have a special relationship with their horses.
And no Polo Day would be complete without a group photograph.

8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Ramiro Castineira, economist with Econometrica consulting firm:
A business that use to import their products to sell, now has a lot of trouble bringing those things into the country. At the same time, they (businesses) are having a hard time because of the slow growth in Argentina today. The second trimester growth rate was zero according to official data, so it's hard selling things in the domestic market. But even if they do manage to sell, they have trouble getting the money out of the country. That combination has made it so some businesses are deciding not to operate in Argentina for now.
9. Wide exterior of shop with sign reading (Spanish) Total liquidation 50 per cent discount.

STORYLINE
The world's most luxurious designer brands are abandoning Argentina rather than complying with tight new government economic restrictions, changes that will soon leave empty shelves and storefronts in the capital's high-end shopping districts where tourists once flocked to see the latest in fashion.
Top international luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Cartier are planning to pull out of Argentina as the government tightens its hold on the Argentine economy with measures aimed at encouraging domestic production and capturing more wealth to aid the poor.
The growing list of labels also includes Emporio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, Escada, Calvin Klein Underwear, Polo Ralph Lauren and Kenzo.
The closures are leaving hundreds out of work, and critics say it's a symptom of broader problems that are stalling the economy.
These international labels have become particularly exposed to an ever-tighter combination of import and currency restrictions, imposed to protect domestic producers.
The fundamental problem is that Argentina's currency is overvalued, said Ramiro Castineira, an economist with the Econometrica consulting firm in Buenos Aires.
At 4.7 pesos to the dollar, it's more profitable to import goods than produce them inside the country, he said.
But now, new import controls mean that the government is holding up import licenses until businesses promise to match the cargo's value by shifting an equal amount of production or investment to Argentina.
Added to the difficulty of importing products, the combination has made some international companies decide it isn't worth it to operate in Argentina.
