Polo forest, also known as Vijaynagar forest is a dry mixed deciduous forest near Abhapur village in Vijaynagar Taluka, Sabarkantha district, Gujarat, India. It is located at the foothills of the Aravalli range and on the banks of perennial Harnav river, spread over the area of 400 sq. km.

Panoramic view of a lake within polo forest
After monsoon, between September and December, the forest becomes lush. There are more than 450 species of medicinal plants, around 275 of birds, 30 of mammals, and 32 of reptiles. There are bears, leopards, hyenas, water fowl, raptors, passerines, and flying squirrels. During winter, The forest attracts migratory birds during winter and wetland birds during monsoon.[2]

The forest also has the endangered Grey Hornbill and Brown-headed Barbet.

There was a town established by the Parihar kings of Idar around the Harnav river probably in the 10th century. It was conquered by the Rathores of Marwar in 15th century and came under Idar State. The town was located between two high hills, Kalaliyo and Mamrehchi, which blocks sunlight for the most days which probably resulted in the abandonment of the town.[1]

The name Polo is derived from pol which literally means a gate in Marwari language.[

You can see the following things when you go to Polo forest: A dam, lots of trees, ruins of old temples, cold flowing water (depends on the season. Don't expect this in Summer), beautiful spiders, lots of people taking selfies and tasty cucumbers.

Also you'll face the new terror for travelers - couples and their entourage taking up the main area for pre-wedding photoshoot. I don't understand why it is permitted in heritage sites. So that people can leave 'X loves Y' carvings on ancient rocks?

The fig trees, when in fruit, are good places to look out for the endangered Grey Hornbill and Brown-headed Barbet who will come to nibble. Grey Hornbills can also be found at a Banyan tree near the campsite, when it is out with its bright red fruit. On another tree on the other side of the camp look for woodpeckers, and fruit birds and prey birds at the top, especially during a particular half hour in the afternoon (the exact time of which changes).

Polo forest is surrounded by beautiful hills from where the Harnav River is crossing and spread across the forest. You can also visit Harnav dam, ancient Shiv temple, Jain temple and other heritage site located in nearby areas. There are limited options available for night stay in Polo forest. One of the best and most economical options is to stay at Polo camp site which is operated by Gujarat state forest department. To stay at Polo Campsite, you will have to book your accommodation through Himmatnagar forest department in advance. You need to send them email with dates, number of people and types of rooms (AC or Non AC). Based on availability of the rooms, they will confirm your booking at Polo campsite.

Every year, Gujarat government celebrate Polo festival by organizing well planned travel events which includes adventure activities, cycling, camping and many more things. There is a polo camp city is setup at polo forest where you can stay and enjoy the polo utsav.

Polo Forest, Gujarat | Nature's Miracle | A must visit place

Polo was an ancient city built near Harnav river. The name is derived from pol,
the Marwari word for gate, signifying its status as a gateway between
Gujarat & Rajasthan. The river also has been described in the ancient Puranas.

The river and surroundings are very picturesque. There is a dam also on the upstream
side of the river.This is a beautiful place for a one day trip, Photography, Pre-wedding
photoshoot, picnic, camping, and trekking. The road leading to the forest is also beautiful
with green fields and mountains on both sides.

Vijaynagar, the nearest town to polo forest is 120 km from Udaipur and 160 km from
Ahmedabad, and is accessible by the National Highway 8.

History:

It is believed to have been established in the 10th century
