Cyprus: Patriotic Cypriot fishermen not yet harmed by crisis
Fishermen in Zygi continue on with their daily lives regardless of Cyprus's current economic problems.
As Zygi is popular among tourists, restaurant owners have not felt the negative consequences of the crisis unlike many other businesses on the island. Consequently the restaurants keep buying their daily stock from local fishermen who say 2013 has been a great year for fishing thus far.
One patriotic fisherman, Gregorios, would have given up a percentage of his savings for his country as part of the proposed European Union bailout plan announced last Saturday. Thankfully for him the bailout plan was rejected by the Cypriot Parliament on Tuesday.
Not one member of parliament voted in favor of the plan, which included a levy of 9.9% on saving accounts with more than €100,000 ($130,000). The bailout would also have hit smaller savers too with the original plan proposing to also tax 6.5% of accounts with savings under €100,000 ($130,000).
