Pomposa Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in the comune of Codigoro near Ferrara, Italy.It was one of the most important in northern Italy, famous for the Carolingian manuscripts preserved in its rich library, one of the wealthiest of Carolingian repositories, and for the Romanesque buildings.

Als je een reis maakt door Emilia Romagna , is een bezoek aan de abdij van Pomposa zeker een aanrader. Het domein rond deze abdij is een baken van rust , je wordt ondergedompeld in het verleden.
Abbazia di Pomposa (FE)
L'abbazia che noi oggi ammiriamo venne consacrata nel 1026 (quindi edificata prima) dall'abate Guido. Alla basilica il magister Mazulo aggiunse un nartece con tre grandi arcate.
Fino al XIV secolo l'abbazia godette di proprietà, sia nei terreni circostanti (compresa una salina a Comacchio), sia nel resto d'Italia, grazie alle donazioni; poi ebbe un lento declino, dovuto a fattori geografici e ambientali, quali la malaria e l'impaludamento della zona, causato anche dalla deviazione dell'alveo del Po (rotta di Ficarolo, 1152).
Ebbe una grande importanza per la conservazione e la diffusione della cultura durante il Medioevo, grazie ai monaci amanuensi che vi risiedevano. In quest'abbazia il monaco Guido d'Arezzo ideò la moderna notazione musicale e fissò il nome delle note musicali. Fra il 1040 e il 1042 vi soggiornò anche il ravennate Pier Damiani, chiamato a istruire i monaci.
Nel 1653 papa Innocenzo X soppresse il monastero, che nel 1802 venne acquistato dalla famiglia ravennate Guiccioli. Alla fine del XIX secolo la proprietà passò allo Stato italiano, è attualmente in gestione al Polo museale dell'Emilia Romagna.

The abbey that we admire today was consecrated in 1026 (then built first) by Abbot Guido. The basilica magister Mazulo added a narthex with three large arches.
Until the fourteenth century the abbey enjoyed the property, both in the surrounding lands (including a salt in Comacchio), and in the rest of Italy, thanks to donations; then he had a slow decline, due to geographic and environmental factors, such as malaria and waterlogging in the area, also caused by the diversion of the riverbed of the Po (Ficarolo route, 1152).
He had a great importance for the preservation and dissemination of culture during the Middle Ages, thanks to the scribe monks living there. In this abbey the monaco Guido d'Arezzo invented modern musical notation and stared at the names of the musical notes. Between 1040 and 1042 he sojourned even the Ravenna Peter Damian, called to instruct the monks.
In 1653 Pope Innocent X suppressed the monastery, which in 1802 was bought by the Ravenna Guiccioli family. At the end of the nineteenth century, the property passed to the Italian State, is currently managed by the Museums of Emilia Romagna.

L'abbazia di Pomposa situata nel comune di Codigoro in provincia di Ferrara è un'abbazia risalente al IX secolo e una delle più importanti di tutto il Nord Italia.
L'origine dell'Abbazia risale ai secoli VI-VII, quando sorse un insediamento benedettino su quella che era l'Insula Pomposia, un'isola boscosa circondata da due rami del fiume e protetta dal mare. Dopo il Mille cominciò la stagione di maggior splendore e divenne centro monastico fiorente votato ad una vita di preghiera e lavoro, la cui fortuna si legò alla figura dell'abate San Guido. Il monastero pomposiano accolse illustri personaggi del tempo, tra i quali è da ricordare Guido d'Arezzo, il monaco inventore della scrittura musicale basata sul sistema delle sette note. Chi ama l'arte antica non deve perdere l'occasione di ammirare nella basilica di Santa Maria uno dei cicli di affreschi più preziosi di tutta la provincia di ispirazione giottesca e il bellissimo pavimento a mosaico con intarsi di preziosi marmi collocati tra il VI e XII secolo.

L'abbazia di Pomposa (FE)
Questo complesso monumentale si trova in zona isolata e agreste, lungo la Strada Romea (Popilia), nell'attuale comune di Codigoro in provincia di Ferrara. Il sito comprende: la chiesa abbaziale con il campanile romanico (1063), gli ediifci conventuali e il Palazzo della Ragione, situato di fronte (in uno dei locali al pianterreno ha sede il book-shop).
Fu uno dei massimi centri culturali del suo tempo. Eretta su una cappella risalente al VI secolo, venne fondata in stile bizantino-ravennate nell' VIII secolo, ma fu nell'undicesimo secolo che conobbe il suo massimo splendore, sotto la gestione dell'abate Guido (1008-1046), che riceveva nel cenobio benedettino molti personaggi illustri, come Pier Damiani e Guido da Arezzo, inventore del pentagramma musicale.
Di mirabile bellezza il pavimento musivo che copre l'intera navata, allestito amalgamando elementi di riutilizzo (forse provenienti da una chiesa di Ravenna) con quelli medievali.
La parte superiore della chiesa ospita il Museo Pomposiano, mentre nel sotterraneo c'è la cripta.
L'abbazia era un faro illuminante e irradiante cultura; vantava una biblioteca della quale purtroppo non resta nulla, eccetto alcuni manoscritti non più conservati qui.
Si narra che da qualche parte, all'interno, siano custoditi i manoscritti originali della Divina Commedia.
Dante Alighieri visitò l'abbazia di Pomposa nel 1321 quando si stava dirigendo a Venezia in veste di ambasciatore dei Polentani; egli la trovò ancora in ottime condizioni ma la decadenza non era lontana. Nel 1663 il papa Innocenzo X la soppresse: i monaci si erano allontanati dalla rigida regola benedettina. Venne trasformata in azienda agricola (!) e Napoleone ne decretò la definitiva soppressione. Solo nel 1910 lo Stato italiano la riscattò, curandone il restauro e la conservazione.
Visitarla oggi rappresenta fare un viaggio nel passato in cui l'Uomo fu capace di realizzare una piccola Creazione, affidando alla pietra e alle immagini simboliche il messaggio universale di trasformazione e redenzione.

L'antichissima chiesa di Gesiùn
I resti d'una delle chiese più antiche ed ancestrali del Piemonte. Forse in origine era un tempio pagano, quello che rimane sono poche mura, qualche affresco, fortunatamente restaurato e recuperato alcuni anni fa. La chiesa si trova in un panorama naturale bellissimo e surreale.
