The bridge of Amours is a footbridge located at the edge of Lake Annecy at the entrance of the Canal du Vassé ; its official name is Gateway of the Public Garden but the Annecy have long since renamed Bridge of Loves. It allows to connect the Pâquier to the Gardens of Europewhere lovers used to go find refuge and tranquility. The urban legend relating to this bridge says that two lovers giving each other a kiss in the middle will be united for life.
Another source mentions that the Pont des Amours owes its name to its former dating experience for prized loves prostitutes. This bridge remains today a very busy passage in an absolutely romantic setting with magnificent views of the city, the canals and the lake. This pedestrian footbridge marks one of the two entrances, with the Thiou , of the waters of the lake inside the city.
The first municipal project of a footbridge between the closed Lombard (current Gardens of Europe) and the esplanade of Pâquier dates from 1836 . In 1845 , on the occasion of the visit of the king of Piedmont-Sardinia, Charles-Albert of Savoy is built a wooden footbridge to allow the spectators to see the nocturnal illuminations of the canal.
Several projects are presented, including that of Genevois Samuel Vaucher-Crémieux and French Ignace Monnet in 1855 . In 1859 , is inaugurated a flat bridge with three arches cast iron, work of the locksmith Claude Grandchamp, under the name of gateway of the public garden. However, this bridge is not practical because it hinders the movement of motor boats and in addition generates too much maintenance costs.
The November 18 , 1906, the municipality chooses to replace the cast iron bridge by a new iron bridge, project of the architect Gaspard Fruaüf. It is inaugurated on November 8 , 1907on the occasion of the inauguration of the monument dedicated to Eugene Sue and the new school of Balmettes.
