Ponta da Piedade, Camilo Beach and Dona Ana Beach aerial view -Lagos - Algarve
With a magnificent view of the Atlantic and the shapes of cliffs carved by the sea and time, Ponte da Piedade (English: Mercy Point) is an idyllic setting of cut out rocks that sharply contrast with the greenish blue waters below.
Located 2 km from Lagos, full of grottos, unknown bays and quiet beaches, the Ponte da Piedade is particularly captivating when viewed from the sea.
Long, narrow stairs lead you down to a small cove where pretty boats wait for visitors wishing to explore this natural paradise. On these trips, experienced fishermen wind their way expertly through the gigantic stone sculptures whilst revealing their names and secrets. Some names given to these misshapen rocks and perpetuated by fishermen include General De Gaulle, Chaminé (chimney), Catedral (cathedral), Belas-Artes (fine arts), Camelo (camel), Museu (museum), Submarino (underwater), Cozinha (kitchen) and Gruta dos Amores (grotto of love).
Further enriching this setting are the many bird species that make it their habitat. A little distance away from the coastline, there are several islands on the slopes of which it is common to see nests of peregrine falcons, ravens, jackdaws, alpine swifts and pallid swifts, as well as colonies of egrets and cattle egrets.
Those daring to climb up 182 steps to the top of the lighthouse will have a view of the Ponte da Piedade promontory, which marks the limit between land and sea.

This video shows my boat trip exploring the cliffs and caves of Ponta da Piedade in Lagos. I mainly filmed this with my GoPro Hero4 so I had no idea what the images would look like, because I was taking pictures with my other camera at the same time. But the videos turned out to be perfect! Enjoy!

Ponta da Piedade (Lagos - Algarve - Portugal)
PONTA DA PIEDADE, qui est située à l'extrémité occidentale de la baie de Lagos (Algarve), est l'une des merveilles du littoral portugais (830 km de côtes). Ce promontoire naturel majestueux créé par un dieu inspiré et habité uniquement par les mouettes, est composé de grottes et de formations rocheuses qui prennent des teintes rousses, ocre ou dorées au cours des heures de la journée, surtout au lever et au coucher du soleil. Pour faire une balade en barque inoubliable, il faut descendre à pied un escalier en pierre éprouvant. La visite du site peut se faire aussi en bateau depuis le port de Lagos. Elle permet de mesurer le formidable travail de l'érosion dans les falaises de grès : arches de pierre, tunnels, imposantes cavernes reliées les unes aux autres. L'imagination du temps et du vent, et des pêcheurs locaux qui vous font la visite à tour de rôle, n'ont pas de limites. On peut ainsi admirer une grande caverne qu'on appelle la cathédrale, une falaise en forme d'éléphant, une autre qui ressemble à un chameau, des falaises jumelles, une cheminée, une mâchoire...

Ponta da Piedade is one those places that is hard to believe exist! Situated around 3 Km from Lago’s city center, it’s probably the most impressing shoreline in the world and according to the Huffington post, the most beautiful beach in the world.
Featuring a gorgeous combination of majestic rock formations, sea arches and caves, ochre cliffs and crystal-clear green water, Ponta da Piedade will certainly leave you in awe.
The beach is accessed by road then on foot along a cliff-top path, by boat or kayak. From the 20m (65ft) height cliffs you can take in all of Ponta da Piedade’s beauty, but you should definitely take the 182 steps down the ravine and get closer the water to have another view of it.
If you visit Ponta da Piedade during the high season you won’t be allowed to get into the water because of the boats and kayaks; unless you go early in the morning or in the end of the afternoon when the boatmen aren’t there. But you can embark on a boat trip to visit nearby beaches and grottoes. In fact, a very popular tour in Lagos is to take a boat or kayak to Ponta da Piedade.
Ponta da Piedade is one of my favorite Lagos beaches and you just can’t miss it!

A Ponta da Piedade é possivelmente um dos cenários naturais mais bonitos do litoral Algarvio. A costa é formada por densas falésias corroídas, que têm sido esculpidas em pilares rochosos, túneis naturais e grutas ocultas. As falésias de arenito irregularmente deformadas, erguem-se em grande contraste às pacíficas águas profundas turquesas e verdes, e toda a região é simplesmente deslumbrante.

Com uma magnífica vista sobre o Atlântico e as formas das falésias, esculpidas pelo mar e pelo tempo, a Ponta da Piedade constitui um cenário edílico de rochedos recortados em constante contraste com o azul esverdeado das águas.
Situada a dois quilómetros de Lagos, na Costa de Ouro, e repleta de grutas, baías desconhecidas e praias tranquilas, a Ponta da Piedade é particularmente atraente quando vista a partir do mar.
Uma longa e estreita escadaria de 182 degraus conduz a uma pequena enseada, onde barcos pitorescos esperam pelos visitantes que pretendem explorar este paraíso natural. Nestas viagens, os pescadores experientes que conduzem os barcos, contornam as gigantescas esculturas de pedra, ao mesmo tempo que desvendam os seus segredos e revelam os seus nomes.
General De Gaulle, Chaminé, Catedral, Belas-Artes, Camelo, Museu, Submarino, Cozinha e Gruta dos Amores são alguns dos nomes destas rochas disformes que os pescadores vão perpetuando.
