Porto Portugal Drone (Ponte Dona Maria Pia) - Our One Day Trip Vlog in Portugal - Parrot Anafi - Portugal 2019 - P0290029
The Maria Pia Bridge (in Portuguese Ponte de D. Maria Pia, commonly known as Ponte de Dona Maria Pia) is a railway bridge built in 1877, and attributed to Gustave Eiffel, situated over the Portuguese northern municipalities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Part of the Linha Norte system of the national railway, the wrought iron, double-hinged, crescent arch spans 353 m (1,158 ft), 60 m (200 ft) over the Douro River. At the time of its construction, it was the longest single-arch span in the world; today, it is no longer used for rail transport and was replaced by a modern structure in 1991. It is often confused with the D. Luís Bridge, which was built nine years later and is located 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) to the west, but resembles the structure, albeit with two decks.
Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal after Lisbon and one of the major urban areas of the Iberian Peninsula.
Located along the Douro river estuary in Northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and its historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
The western part of its urban area extends to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its combined Celtic-Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to as the origin of the name Portugal, based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin.
In Portuguese, the name of the city is spelled with a definite article o Porto; Consequently, its English name evolved from a misinterpretation of the oral pronunciation and referred to as Oporto in modern literature and by many speakers.
One of Portugal's internationally famous exports, port wine, is named after Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the packaging, transport, and export of fortified wine.
In 2014 and 2017, Porto was elected The Best European Destination by the Best European Destinations Agency. Porto is on the Portuguese Way path of the Camino de Santiago.

Ponte de Dom Luis I in Porto, Portugal
The Dom Luís I Bridge , or Luís I Bridge, is a double-deck metal arch bridge that spans the River Douro between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At its construction, its 172 metres span was the longest of its type in the world. It has been confused with the nearby Maria Pia Bridge, a railway bridge that was built 9 years earlier, that is similar in aspect to the Luís I bridge.
In 1879, Gustave Eiffel presented a project to construct a new bridge over the Douro, with a single deck in order to facilitate navigation. This project was rejected due to dramatic growth of the urban population, which required a re-thinking of the limits of a single-deck platform.
The bridge is situated in an isolated, urban area over the River Douro between the granite banks, where the Cathedral of Porto and the escarpment of the Serra do Pilar, forming a box valley. It is 1 kilometre from the bridge of D. Maria Pia and, farther along, the Arrábida Bridge. On the Porto side, the lower deck connects the Cais da Ribeira and the upper Avenida Vímara Peres, while the bank of Vila Nova de Gaia to the Avenida Diogo Leite and Avenida da República, respectively. Access to the Porto side is located along the Pillars of Ponte Pênsil, while the Guindais Funicular, the Church and Shelter of Ferro, the Fernandina Walls and the Monastery of Serra do Pilar.
The iron bridge has two decks, of differing heights and widths, between which develop a large 172.5 metres diameter, central arch supporting these upper and lower decks. Both decks are moored to the riverbanks by means of masonry piers. Those in the upper deck, are rectangular with a trimmed cornice finish, consisting of two staggered registers separated by cornice and interlacing struts. The lower deck is based on large foundations supporting molded cornices and wedges linked together by a felled arch, and framed by interlacing beams. At the base of the arches, facing the riverbanks, are large marble plaques with inscriptions PONTE LUIZ I, and on the upstream face are stones representing royal coat-of-arms, with a shield framed by garlands. At the base of the lower deck, are iron-pillared, pyramidal-truncated pillars, erected in three sections, that attach to the upper deck.
The bridge has an asphalt pavement for vehicular traffic, separated by cast iron guards, that limit the pedestrian sidewalks, that develop laterally. The central arch emerges from the bollards at the foundations and decreasing thickness towards the center. The upper deck, also paved in asphalt and flanked by pedestrian walkways in stonework protected with cast iron guards (similar to the lower deck). From this deck are lamps used for illumination, confronting and connected, forming decorative circles at the angles. Under the guard is cut-out-like lambrequin decorated with phytomorphic elements.

City break : Portugal : Porto - The Ribeira distric Dom Luis I Bridge on the Douro River from drone
Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal and one of the major urban areas of the Iberian Penisula. A gem in the North of Portugal famous for its Port wine, Porto is colourful city, cherished as a World Heritage Site. Its unique quirkiness is attributed to the jumble of styles and eras which make up its foundations. On top of this, the city is a lively hub for all ages, sharing a love of culture, food and music which makes a city break to Porto a popular destination for tourists year upon year.
The city boasts an extensive history, interesting tourist attractions and a buzzing nightlife. There is a lot to see and do in Porto.
Take the funicular to the top level and walk across - amazing views. Walk down the streets at the Gaia side of the river and visit the Port Houses. Cafes are cheaper this side of the river too.
The Ribeira district - The oldest district of the city which is filled with ancient houses, narrow cobbled streets and numerous family owned restaurants, cafes and bars.
The Dom Luís I Bridge is a double-deck metal bridge that spans the River Douro between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At its construction, its 172 metres span was the longest of its type in the world. It has been confused with the nearby Maria Pia Bridge, a railway bridge that was built 9 years earlier.
There are trains that run in the middle of the bridge only a few feet from the walking area. That said, the walk across the bridge is worth the sights and sounds. The views from this Eiffel bridge are wonderful.

Porto - Fevereiro, 2012
Porto City, Portugal - Walking Tour on Bridge Dom Luís I ????????
The double-decker Dom Luis I bridge is an icon of the city of Porto. It spans the River Douro linking the Port wine houses of Vila Nova de Gaia with the bustling downtown Ribeira district of Porto. Construction took place between 1881 and 1886 with the bridge being built adjacent to an existing bridge which it replaced. The granite pillars of the original bridge are still in place, standing on the Ribeira like a pair of gate posts.
It is probably no coincidence that the bridge passes more than a fleeting resemblance of its neighbouring bridge, the Dona Maria Pia bridge. Both bridges consist of huge and complex ironwork frameworks with a great arch supporting the transit way. This should come as no surprise as the D. Maria Pia bridge was designed by Gustave Eiffel of Paris tower fame!
Opened in 1876 the D. Maria Pia bridge held the record for the largest span of any bridge of this type until work began on the Dom Luís bridge. The names of the two bridges came from the then king of Portugal, Luís I, and his wife, Maria Pia of Savoy. With a span of 172 metres (564 ft) and a height of 44.6 metres (146 ft) this was a great feat of engineering. The designer this time, Téophile Seyrig, had been Eiffel's partner on the previous project and showed himself to be a more than able engineer with this bridge.
One of the notable features of the Ponte Dom Luís I is it's two levels; one on top of the arch and the other suspended below it. Both decks were initially intended to carry road traffic but these days the top carries the Porto Metro trains as well as having a pedestrian walkway. It is worth making the crossing on the upper level, although being 60 metres (190 ft) above the waters of the Douro, it might not be for everyone!
Porto: Dom Luis I Bridge
D. Luis I Bridge is probably the only one in the world with two decks at very different levels.
The lower deck, almost at river level, connects the lower area of Oporto's Ribeira with the lower area of Vila Nova de Gaia, close to most of the port wine cellars and warehouses.
Porto, Piątek, 8 lipca 2016
opis na podstawie :
Porto (wym. ˈpoɾtu) – miasto położone w północnej części Portugalii, nad Oceanem Atlantyckim, u ujścia rzeki Duero (port. Douro). W gminie (município) Porto mieszka 237 591 mieszkańców, zespół miejski (cidade) zamieszkiwało w 2014 roku 1 496 000 mieszkańców, natomiast w całej metropolii (Área Metropolitana do Porto) mieszka 1 762 524 mieszkańców.
W XIX wieku do miasta trafiła epoka przemysłowa.
Miasto jest połączone z Viana do Castelo drogą A28, z Aveiro drogą A29, z Lizboną drogą A1, z Bragança drogą A4 i z Braga drogą A3.
Najnowszy most Ponte do Infante ukończono w 2003.

Luís (Ponte Luis I bridge) - the double deck metal bridge that connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia across the Rio Duoro. And if you think it looks like it's neighbouring bridge, the Dona Maria Pia, then you won't be surprised to know that the Dona Maria was designed by non other than Gustave Eiffel (he of the Eiffel Tower, Paris fame.) The Ponte Luis I was designed by his colleague.

The Freixo Bridge is a road bridge that connects Vila Nova de Gaia to Porto, on the Douro River, in Portugal. From the bridges that connect the Port to Vila Nova de Gaia, the Freixo Bridge is the one that is more upstream of the river Douro.
Project of authorship of Prof. António Reis, the Freixo Bridge was built in an attempt to minimize traffic congestion in the Bridges of Arrábida and Dom Luis I, particularly notable since the late 1980s.
These are, in fact, two bridges built side by side and 10 cm apart. The bridge has eight spans, the main one being 150 m. It is a road bridge with eight traffic routes (four in each direction), but with a board at many lower levels than all other bridges connecting the Porto to Gaia. The Freixo Bridge was inaugurated in September 1995.
