Kanoni is the most beautiful viewspot of Corfu (Kerkyra) Town. While drinking your coffee or beer you can watch the landing and taking off of planes. From that spot you can see the picturesque azure blue waters bay with Pontikonisi Island (Mouse Island) and Vlacherna Monastery. This worldwide famous place is only 3,5 km away from Corfu downtown. The view from Kanoni actually serves as Corfu's visual signature; you'll see copies of it everywhere on postcards and in magazines. Kanoni was named after the battery of artillery established by the French in 1798. One of the battery's cannons still stands at the tourist kiosk found on the site. Kanoni is cut off from the rest of the island on the west side by Halikiopoulou, a swampy lagoon. This lagoon is separated from the sea by a pier (seawall) , which joins the southern tip of Kanoni to the area called Perama. The lake of Halkiopoulou continues to be an important hydro-biotope that shelters various migrating birds despite the tourist growth of the region and the expansion of the airport.
Vlacherna is the small flat island with a pier out to it and it is completely occupied by a small 12th century monastery. It is a small church that comes complete with icons of the monastery's patron saint Our Lady of Vlaherna. From Vlaherna Island you can take a boat to Mouse Island found in the background. The Mouse Island is a hilly, wooded island hosting a 13th century monastery. According to the legend, Mouse Island itself was originally formed when the ship that had taken Odysseus back to Ithaca returning to its home port was turned to stone by Poseidon. Poseidon was angry at being defied by the Phaeceans. Others say that it got its name because of its shape. Corfu airport is built on the lagoon and the main runway ends only about 100 metres away from the Vlaherna monastery itself. This makes it an ideal spot for aeroplane watching as the planes appear to graze the top of the monastery as they land and take off, making an amazing sight to behold. Standing on the causeway from Kanoni to Perama, you are directly in line with the flight path and could have your hat knocked off by the wheels of the planes!

Pontikonissi & Kanoni - Corfu, Greece (feat. planes and turtles!!)
Pontikonisi (Greek for Mouse Island) is a greek islet at the rock of Kanoni near the island of Corfu. It has taken its name because when viewed from the rock its shape reminds us that of a mouse.
The Kanoni area is the name given to the peninsula south of Corfu Town, that includes Mon Repos palace and the Palaiopoli ancient and byzantine sites. It ends at the rock of Kanoni where you can see the most iconic and photographed view of all of Corfu (the Panagia Vlachernon monastery with the Pontikonissi at the back), which is thε shot with which I end this video. A very interesting feature is the vicinity to Corfu International airport which means that from the rock you can continuously see airplanes taking off or landing from a breathtakingly small distance.

Angelokastro (Greek: Αγγελόκαστρο, English translation: “Castle of the Angel[s]” or “Angelos’s castle”) is one of the most important Byzantine castles of Greece. It is located on the island of Corfu at the top of the highest peak of the island’s shoreline in the northwest coast near Palaiokastritsa (Greek: Παλαιοκαστρίτσα, English translation: “Old castle place”) and built on particularly precipitous and rocky terrain. It stands 1,000 ft (305 m) on a steep cliff above the sea and surveys the City of Corfu and the mountains of mainland Greece to the southeast and a wide area of Corfu toward the northeast and northwest.

GREECE,Island of CORFU: THE FAMOUS MOUSE ISLAND (ΠΟΝΤΙΚΟΝΗΣΙ) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to the beautiful Greek island of Corfu (Kerkyra) and let's visit Pontikonisi (also known as “Mouse Island”) which is a Greek islet located at the entrance of Halkiopoulos lagoon, opposite to the airport area in Corfu. The islet is better-known for hosting the Byzantine chapel of Pantokrator, dating back to the 11th century and only open to visitors every year on August 6.
Corfu, an island off Greece’s northwest coast in the Ionian Sea, is defined by rugged mountains and a resort-studded shoreline. Its cultural heritage reflects years spent under Venetian, French and British rule before it was united with Greece in 1864. Corfu Town, flanked by 2 imposing Venetian fortresses, features winding medieval lanes, a French-style arcade and the grand Palace of St. Michael and St. George.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Corfu trip to Kanoni - Vlacherna, Pondikonissi and airport (1)
Kanoni is a small village nearby Corfu city and many people go there to have a beautiful view at the monastery of Vlacherna and the little Island Podikonissi (Mouse Island) with it's little church. Also the airport with only one runway was at the same place. So it was wonderful to see how old meets modern, watching the planes landing at and leaving the airport.
The Vlacherna Monastery / Corfu 2017
The Vlacherna Monastery
It is probably the most well known corfiot landmark, its image comes to mind when talking about Corfu. The Vlacherena monastery was founded many centuries ago on a little rocky island close to the southern tip of the Kanoni peninsula. It was a women’s monastery and according to the marble plaque above the white traditional campanile, the present chapel was built in 1685. The oldest still existing funeral gravestone dates from 1758. In 1799, when Corfu was under the rule of democratic France, it was mentioned that the church belonged to the family of the famous Greek composer N.C. Mantzaros. During the 19th century, the monastery had started to decline.
It is open to the public all year round. Somebody can enjoy its beauty and tranquillity and pray.

TRAVEL VIDEO CORFU ISLAND KANONI GARISA BAY
SUMMER 2019 CORFU KANONI GARISA BAY
Kanoni, the church of Panagia Vlacherna and the Mouse Island in Corfu: The location of Kanoni with the church of Panagia Vlacherna below and the Mouse Island (Pontikonissi) are the most famous and photographed spots of Corfu. Kanoni is actually a quarter of Corfu Town, just a couple of km from the city center. It took its name from an old cannon that stands on top of the hill. This hill is lush green and has many luxurious hotels and local residences.
Some steps go down the hill from Kanoni and you reach the small church of Panagia Vlacherna. A narrow 300m passageway connects the island with the church. Constructed in the 17th century, this lovely chapel has an impressive wooden-carved iconostasis and beautiful frescoes inside. The roof has red tiles and above the gate entrance, there is a tall bell tower.
Fishing boats depart frequently from the church and go to the legendary Mouse Island, just 5 min boat ride. This lush green island took this name due to its tiny size. According to mythology, this rocky island is the ship of Ulysses that was stoned by god Poseidon. In the center of the Mouse Island, there is the 13th-century church of Pantokrator. This church celebrates on August 6th with a large religious panigiri for Corfu.
On top of the hill in Kanoni, there are two cafeterias with amazing view to the church of Vlacherna, the sea, and the Mouse Island. It is also very frequent that you see an airplane landing and taking off from this spot, as the airport of Corfu is right next to the church. Another longer passageway connects the church of Vlacherna with the opposite location of Perama.
