Places to see in ( Aachen - Germany ) Ponttor
The Ponttor in Aachen, Germany, (known in the 17th and 18th centuries as the Brückenpforte or Brückenthor) is one of the two remaining gates of the original city wall of Aachen (the other being the Marschiertor). The westernmost of the north-facing gates (the other being the Sandkaultor, which no longer exists), the Ponttor was built in the 14th century and manned by soldiers and militia throughout the Free Imperial City of Aachen era. Today, the Ponttor is used by German Youth and Scout groups belonging to the German Scount Club (1945) and the German Scout Association Saint George.
The Ponttor was constructed as a right-angled three-stock tower castle. In the main entrance, there is a Portcullis as well as a machicolation, through which things could be dropped on invading forces. A bridge passage with crenelations spanned a moat and was strengthened in the foregate with two reinforced towers (barbicans). The building material was Devonian sandstone, Pennsylvanian carbonite sandstone and quartzite, with the framing material made of light bluestone.
Though it is true that Aachen has many rivers and streams that pass through it, none are in the vicinity of the Ponttor, the name for which is assumed to come from the Latin word pons, meaning bridge. However, before the gate was named, the area of the city (as well as the area's main street) already carried this appellation, and thus the city gate is simply named for the area around it. The neighborhood received the name because of a bridge, as during Ancient Roman times, a fortification existed on what is today known as the Annuntiaten stream. Beyond this area lay extensive swamps, and to exit the settlement, one would have to cross a bridge. Later settlements that were built in the area beyond the fortification were said to be beyond the bridge, and from this, the area, street, and city gate all got their names.

Places to see in ( Aachen - Germany ) Marschiertor
The Marschiertor , until the 17th century also Mies (ch) ierspforte or later called Berseter Tor or Burtscheider Tor , was the southern gate of the outer Aachen city wall . It is one of the most powerful surviving city gates in Western Europe . Its construction began around 1257 and was probably completed shortly after 1300. With the Marschiermitteltor even Burtscheider Middle Gate called, it had a counterpart in the inner ring of walls, known as Barbarossa wall , which had a total of ten goals.
The Marschiertor is built as a twin tower Torburg . The two towers are four-storey, the middle tower five-storey. Towers and central structure form a quasi unity with common pointed tent roof . The gate is a total of 23.8 meters wide, its passage width is 4.8 meters. The field-side portal has three staggered portal arches. The outer arch reaches up to a height of about 13 meters to the second floor, the next with weir platform to a height of about 8.5 meters in the first floor. The actual arched portal has a height of five meters , including the vaults .
Through the two round towers flanking the four-edged central structure, spiral staircases lead into the Waffensaal on the city side. The guard rooms were on the ground floor of the towers, including the dungeons . At the east tower there is an outboard Aborterker . The Marschiertor had like all Aachen city gates - except the Junkerstor (Vaalser gate) - in the southwest originally a Vortor, which was similar to the still preserved Vortor of the Ponttors. It was (probably shortly after the 17th century city fire ) demolished to more modern entrenchment to make room. An excerpt from a painting by Johann Ferdinand Jansenshows the gate in 1796 without Vortor.
The Marschiertor belonged, like the other still-preserved gate, the Ponttor , to the four main gates (Ponttor, Kölntor , Marschiertor and Jakobstor ) of the 14th to 15th century built second city fortification ring Aachen, the so-called Gothic wall , as the southernmost Point. It is at the end of Franzstraße and at the beginning of the former road to Burtscheid that the Burtscheider Obertor (resigned in August 1865) [3] ends. The names Marschier , Mieschiers or Berseter also stem from Burtscheid, which are all polished forms of Burtscheid , Porcetum (Latin name Burtscheids) or the Platt variant.

Places to see in ( Aachen - Germany ) Elisenbrunnen
The Elisenbrunnen in Aachen is a classical building by the architects Johann Peter Cremer and Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The construction was the responsibility of the Aachen private builder Andreas Hansen . The building was named after the Prussian Crown Princess Elisabeth Ludovika of Bavaria (Elise), the daughter of the Bavarian King Maximilian I , wife of the later Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Her bust was made in 1828 from Carrara marble by Christian Friedrich Tieck and 1832 in the rotunda established.
The Elisenbrunnen today consists of an open foyer with Doric column porch and a pavilion left and right with several rooms. From two drinking wells flows the warm water of the Kaiserquelle (52 ° C), which is led via a pipe from Büchel to Brunnen. The water is highly sulphurous , so that the Elisenbrunnen always emanates a characteristic smell of rotten eggs ( hydrogen sulphide ).
Due to its numerous thermal springs , Aachen has always been a bathing and health resort . Already the Romans used the hot springs for the operation of spas . At the end of the 17th century, Aachen became a fashion spa, which was visited by crowned heads and other celebrities .
In 1819 the city council of Aachen decided to build a well hall. With the new drinking fountain a representative building was to be built in which to spa guests as the healing water estimated thermal waters of the 180 meters from the Kaiser source could be issued. The original location of the well was the moat. Due to the better morphological position (even gradient from the Kaiserquelle), however, the decision was made to locate at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz. The foundation stone was laid on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the throne of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III.on November 16, 1822. In 1823, Karl Friedrich Schinkel revised the original plans of Cremer. Only after the granting of the building permit by the Prussian government in 1824 could be started with the construction of the new drinking fountain. The rear part of the Elisenbrunnes was built on remnants of the medieval city wall (Barbarossamauer).
In 2009, the Elisenbrunnen was closed to traffic for several months; Static defects were found in the vaults of the basement room under the rotunda . The ground floor of the rotunda had to be removed, it was reconstructed after the completion of the static backup work with bluestone plates.

Aachen is a spa city near Germany’s borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. Aachen Cathedral was founded around 800 A.D. and a Gothic chancel was added later. Its Domschatzkammer (treasury) has medieval artifacts including the shrine of Charlemagne, who was buried here in 814 A.D. Nearby is the baroque town hall, Aachener Rathaus, with 19th-century frescoes. Sulfurous water fills the fountains of Elisenbrunnen.
Aachen has been around for millennia. The Romans nursed their war wounds and stiff joints in the steaming waters of its mineral springs, but it was Charlemagne who put the city firmly on the European map. The emperor, too, enjoyed a dip now and then, but it was more for strategic reasons that he made Aachen the geographical and political capital of his vast Frankish Empire in 974 – arguably the first empire with European dimensions.
Today, Aachen is still a quintessentially international city that gets unique appeal from its location in the border triangle with the Netherlands and Belgium. Charlemagne’s legacy lives on in the stunning Dom, which in 1978 became Germany’s first Unesco World Heritage Site, as well as in the new Centre Charlemagne and the Route Charlemagne walking trail. Aachen has a lively vibe that's further enhanced by a large student population.
Aachen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at the point where Germany borders on Belgium and the Netherlands. Historically this spa-town was a prominent city, the place where the German Kings were crowned, and a famously favoured residence of Charlemagne who still lies buried in the impressive cathedral he himself had built. The city is packed with historic sights that remind of those days, including medieval buildings, city gates and beautiful fountains. Today, Aachen has become a pleasant mix of historic (often Baroque) grandeur and modern innovation. It has a population of 246,000 and is home to a large and highly regarded university. All in all, a place well worth visiting.
The old town is best explored on foot and orientation signs can be found all around. Aachen at a whole is a fairly large city. A car can come in handy but parking can get expensive, especially in the center of town. Fortunately, Aachen has an excellent city bus system, operated by ASEAG, including a few night bus lines. You can get tickets from the bus driver. You can rent a bike at the fahrrad station, in the central train station. Although it is not the most biker-friendly town in Germany, there are a number of bike routes and getting around on bike is increasingly popular. Taxis are readily available on the train stations but also on streets.

Aachen or Bad Aachen, traditionally known in English and French as Aix-la-Chapelle is a spa and border city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Aachen was the preferred residence of Charlemagne, and, from 936 to 1531, the place where 31 Holy Roman Emperors were crowned Kings of the Germans. Aachen is the westernmost city in Germany, located near the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands, 61 km (38 mi) west south west of Cologne in a former coal-mining area. RWTH Aachen University is located in the city. Aachen's industries include science, engineering and information technology. In 2009, Aachen was ranked eighth among cities in Germany for innovation.
Aachen is located in the middle of the Meuse–Rhine Euroregion, close to the border tripoint of Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The city of Heerlen in the Netherlands lies nearby, as does Eupen, the capital of the German-speaking Community of Belgium, both located about 20 km (12.4 mi) from Aachen's city centre. Aachen lies near the head of the open valley of the River Wurm (which today flows through the city in canalised form), part of the larger basin of the River Meuse.
Aachen's railway station, the Hauptbahnhof (Central Station), was constructed in 1841 for the Cologne–Aachen railway line. In 1905 it was moved closer to the city centre. The first horse tram line in Aachen opened in December 1880. After electrification in 1895, it was with maximal 213.5 kilometres (132.7 mi) in 1915 the fourth-longest tram system in Germany. Aachen is connected to the Autobahn A4 (West-East), A44 (North-South) and A544 (a smaller motorway from the A4 to the Europaplatz near the city centre). Maastricht Aachen Airport (IATA: MST, ICAO: EHBK) is the main airport of Aachen and Maastricht. It is located around 15 NM (28 km; 17 mi) northwest of Aachen.

Places to see in ( Aachen - Germany ) Karlsbrunnen
The Karlsbrunnen , also known as Marktbrunnen , is located on the market in Aachen directly in front of the Aachen Town Hall. The Karlsbrunnen is the oldest fountain in the city. Since 1620, he has been crowned by a figure of Charlemagne , who was cast in Dinant . When the French invaded the city in 1792, the statue of Charlemagne was taken to Paris as a spoils of war , but could be regained by successful negotiations of the incumbent Aachen Maire Johann Wilhelm Gottfried von Lommessem in 1804 and re-established a year later. The original figure has been in the Coronation Hall of the Town Hall since 1969.
The six-ton bronze shell with a diameter of 3.60 m is called in Aachen dialect Eäzekomp . This term is ambiguous. You can derive it from ore or translate it with peas bowl . It was cast according to inscription by the Aachen bell founders Franz and Peter von Trier with the support of the foreign bell founder Daniel Laner (Lonner). On its outer band, between water garlands with sea creatures, the imperial eagle and the Aachen coat of arms alternately show six water-spouting lion heads and as many applied escutcheons. These are the deserving mayors Joachim Berchem , Albrecht Schrick ,Dietrich Speckhewer , Egidius Bleyenheuft and Johann Schörer and the citizen Peter Brunnenstein assign.
The Aachen master builder Johann Joseph Couven designed the bluestone basin in 1735 . Three years later, Couven added the two bronze fish to the bluestone basin. Since the Karlsbrunnen was designed as a fountain of ornamentation, Couven designed in 1736 two small Laufbrunnen, where the citizens of Aachen could draw water. These stood in the immediate vicinity of the Charles Fountain. The three wells were alimented over the so-called market water pipe, the u. a. also supplied in its further course the Hotmannspief with water of the Pau .

Trek to Lousberg | Aachen Evenings | Vlog Germany | Highest Hill in Aachen | Indian in Germany
Evening trek through Ponttor to the highest hill in Aachen, Lousberg. You can enjoy a walk through nature, or use the steps to run up, view the city from the top and use the compass-like installation to find how far the main cities in the world are, from Aachen.
The Lousberg is the highest hill in Aachen and is a great place to come for anyone wanting to be out in the fresh air. There is a holiday feel to the place, especially in good weather. Then, you’ll not only see joggers climbing up the 264-metre hill. Many families spend their free time here on one of the playgrounds, and walkers enjoy the lovely view over the Soers district. Do you feel like spending a relaxed Sunday just hanging about? Since 2008, the hammocks on the Nordhang slope of the Lousberg are there for anyone to use!
There is a story about where the Lousberg comes from. When the devil was tricked by the Aacheners, he wanted revenge so he travelled all the way across the empire to the North Sea where he took a giant pile of sand from the bottom of the sea. He threw it over his shoulders in a bag and dragged it to Aachen, planning to bury the cathedral and the entire city underneath it. When he had almost arrived in Aachen, right at the place where the Lousberg is today, he took a brake and met a beggar child called Lous. He asked her: Child tell me, how far is it to the empires capital Aachen? Lous, who had recognized the devil because of his hooves and tail answered: Alas, do you see my clothes? Only lumps! And do you see my shoes? I've walked so far, my soles are almost gone! When I bought my clothes and shoes at the market in Aachen, they were all new. Thinking that Aachen was still very far away, the devil decided to let go of his plan. He left the giant pile of sand right in front of the city and he went back to hell. This is why the mountain is called Lousberg and why people say, that Aacheners are too smart for the devil.

The Center Charlemagne - Neues Stadtmuseum Aachen is the home and history museum of the city of Aachen . It got its name after Karl the large one , the most well-known and most important historical personality Aachen. The museum was set up in an administrative building of the city of Aachen at the Katschhof No. 1, which was built between 1958 and 1962 by Gerhard Graubner and later listed as a historical monument . The opening of the Center Charlemagne took place on 19 June 2014. The old city museum was housed from 1961 to 2010 in the building of the castle Frankenberg ; The exhibits were stored in a depot until the reopening.
The Center Charlemagne is also the central departure point for the Route Charlemagne , which brings together the most important stations of Aachen in the fields of history, art, culture and architecture. It is largely supported by the Museum Association Aachen , which promotes the municipal museums.
The museum is divided into a 800 m² area for permanent exhibitions and a 200 m² area for temporary exhibitions, as well as meeting and conference rooms, museum education rooms and a museum café, all equipped with modern technology. Both exhibition areas were furnished in the triangular shape typical of Aachen, as can be found again and again on historic sites in Aachen's cityscape, because once the grid of the original Roman city was moved eastwards by the Christian-Carolingian Palatinate.

The Puppenbrunnen is located in Aachen , North Rhine-Westphalia , on Krämerstraße, the connection between the cathedral and the town hall. It was founded by the Aachener Bank and created in 1975 by the Aachen sculptor Boniface Stirnberg. Above the figures sits the rooster, which is supposed to remind of the French occupation. All figures have movable joints.
The Puppenbrunnen in Aachen is hard to miss as it stands at the back of Aachen Cathedral at the beginning of the pedestrian zone Krämerstraße. This modern fountain artwork is characterized mainly by the fact that all figures are flexible in many ways and should be recorded naturally. For children this is always a pleasure. In the meantime, mothers who go shopping in the surrounding boutiques have to expect that their little ones can get pretty wet sometimes.
This fountain object is clearly the signature of the Aachen artist Bonifatius Stirnberg, who created a multitude of sculptures, bronzes and movable fountains in the Euregio. Bonifatius Stirnberg comes as a studied sculptor of the first Joseph Beuys class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
